Erin's POV

Five Years Later

Spring sunshine filtered through the branches of the towering pines surrounding our forest villa. The scent of freshly turned earth filled my nostrils as I knelt in our garden, carefully pruning the rosebushes Derek had planted for me after the twins were born. The roses were just beginning to bloom, their delicate pink petals unfurling in the warm afternoon light.

"Mama! Look!" Chloe's delighted squeal drew my attention to where my four-year-old daughter was chasing after an orange butterfly, her tiny hands reaching toward the sky. Her dark curls—so like her father's—bounced with each step, and her golden eyes glowed with excitement.

"I see it, sweetheart," I called back, smiling as Lucas, her twin brother, toddled after her with equal determination. Unlike his sister, Lucas had inherited my brown hair, though his eyes were the same mesmerizing gold as Chloe's.

"Careful not to go too far," my mother warned from her seat at the garden table, though her tone was more amused than concerned. Five years ago, I wouldn't have imagined this scene: my mother healthy and strong, sipping tea in our garden while watching her grandchildren play.

"They're fine, Mom," I said, peeling off my gardening gloves and joining her at the table. "Their wolf senses are already developing. They can smell the boundaries Derek set."

My mother smiled, the lines around her eyes crinkling. "It's still hard to believe how much has changed. Look at you—a mother of two, settled and happy."

I followed her gaze to the twins, who had given up on the butterfly and were now rolling in a patch of clover, giggling as they play-wrestled like the wolf pups they were. My heart swelled with a love so fierce it almost hurt.

"I never thought I'd have this," I admitted, pouring myself a cup of tea. "After everything with Alexander, the poisoning... there were moments I didn't think we'd survive, let alone build this life."

"The Moon Goddess had plans for you and Derek," my mother said, reaching across to squeeze my hand. "Even when he stepped down as Alpha, she was guiding you both to this happiness."

Inside the villa, I could sense Derek and Aaron in the study. My brother had arrived earlier that afternoon, carrying documents from Bradley and seeking Derek's counsel on a territorial dispute with the Ridgeclaw Pack. Though Derek was no longer the Alpha, his wisdom was still valued, and Bradley often sent Aaron to consult with him on important matters.

"Do you miss it?" my mother asked suddenly. "The pack life, being Luna?"

I considered her question, watching as Lucas pounced on his sister, who skillfully rolled away. Even at four, they showed the coordination and strength of born werewolves.

"Sometimes," I answered honestly. "I miss the sense of community, the traditions. But Derek and I made the right choice. This life—" I gestured to the villa, the garden, my children "—this is what we needed. After everything we went through, we needed peace."

My mother nodded, understanding in her eyes. "And Bradley has done well. The pack is thriving under his leadership."

"He has," I agreed. "Derek was right about him all along. He just needed time to grow into the role."

The sound of the study door opening caught my attention, and moments later, Derek and Aaron stepped onto the porch. My breath still caught at the sight of my mate, even after all these years. The sunlight caught in his dark hair, now slightly longer than he used to wear it, and his grey eyes immediately sought mine, his lips curving into a smile that was reserved only for me.

"Daddy!" Chloe and Lucas abandoned their game and raced toward the porch, tiny legs pumping furiously.

Derek crouched down, arms outstretched to receive them. They crashed into him with all the force their little bodies could muster, and he laughed, the sound deep and rich, as he gathered them close.

"Have you been good for your mother?" he asked, rubbing his nose against each of theirs in the wolf gesture of affection.

"Yes!" they chorused, though the mischievous glint in Chloe's eyes told a different story.

"They've been chasing butterflies all afternoon," I said, rising to greet my brother with a hug.

Aaron embraced me tightly, then released me to ruffle Lucas's hair. "These two get bigger every time I see them."

"That's because you don't visit enough," my mother chided gently, standing to kiss her son's cheek.

"The pack keeps me busy," Aaron defended himself, but there was no real heat in his words. "Bradley runs a tight ship, just like Derek did."

Derek, with Chloe now perched on his shoulders and Lucas clinging to his leg, moved to stand beside me. His arm slipped around my waist, pulling me against his side. The familiar warmth of his body next to mine sent a ripple of contentment through me.

"Did you resolve the boundary issue?" I asked, leaning into him.

Derek nodded. "Aaron has a plan to present to Bradley. It should satisfy both packs without causing conflict."

"Always the diplomat," I teased, earning a squeeze from his hand on my hip.

"Someone has to be," he replied, his eyes twinkling with humor. "Especially when dealing with Ethan's stubborn pride."

The mention of the Ridgeclaw Alpha made me think of all the history between our packs, how far we'd come from those days of suspicion and rivalry. Now, under Bradley's leadership, the Darkwood Pack had established stronger alliances than ever before.

As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the garden, Aaron glanced at his watch. "We should get going, Mom. I promised Bradley I'd be back before the evening meeting."

My mother nodded, gathering her purse. "It was lovely to spend the day with you all," she said, bending to kiss each of the twins. "Be good for your parents, little ones."

"Will you come back tomorrow, Grandma?" Lucas asked, his small hands clutching at her skirt.

"Not tomorrow, sweetheart, but soon," she promised, smoothing his hair.

"I'll walk you to the car," Derek offered, setting Chloe down beside me.

The four of us followed Aaron and my mother to the front of the cottage where Aaron's car was parked. The twins skipped ahead, playing some game of their own invention that involved hopping over every shadow on the path.

"Don't be strangers," I said as Aaron helped our mother into the passenger seat. "The twins miss their uncle and grandmother."

"Only the twins?" Aaron teased, pulling me into another hug. "I'll bring Mom back next weekend, if that works for you both."

Derek, who had been loading some homemade preserves I'd made for my mother into the car, nodded. "We'll be here."

"Thank you for the advice," Aaron said, extending his hand to Derek. "Bradley will appreciate it."

Derek clasped his hand firmly. "Tell him I'm proud of how he's handling things. The pack is lucky to have him."

With final waves and calls of goodbye, Aaron started the engine and began the drive back to the Darkwood Estate. We stood watching until the car disappeared around the bend in the forest road, the twins waving enthusiastically long after the vehicle was out of sight.

As twilight deepened around us, Derek crouched down and scooped Chloe into his arms. "Time for dinner, I think."

I picked up Lucas, who immediately snuggled his head against my neck, his small body warm against mine. Derek reached out his free hand, and I took it, our fingers intertwining naturally.

"Did you and Uncle Aaron talk about boring pack stuff?" Chloe asked her father as we walked back to the cottage, the windows now glowing with welcoming light.

Derek chuckled. "Yes, princess. Very boring pack stuff."

"I want to learn about pack stuff too," Lucas declared from my arms. "I'm going to be Alpha one day, like you were, Daddy."

A shadow passed briefly over Derek's face—so quickly I might have missed it if I didn't know him so well. "There's plenty of time for that," he said gently. "Right now, you just need to be Lucas."

I squeezed his hand, understanding the complex emotions behind his words. Derek had never regretted giving up his position for me, but I knew he sometimes wondered what it would mean for our children's future in the pack.

"And what about me?" Chloe demanded, not to be outdone by her brother. "What will I be?"

"You, my fierce little wolf," Derek said, pressing a kiss to her forehead, "will be whatever you want to be."

The certainty in his voice made my heart swell. This was what I had fought for, what we had both sacrificed for—the freedom to give our children choices we never had.

---

As we stepped into our home, the scent of the stew I'd left simmering welcomed us. Derek set Chloe down and helped both children wash their hands while I checked on dinner. The domestic routine we'd established felt as natural to me now as breathing.

Later, after the twins were bathed and tucked into bed with stories of brave wolves and moonlit adventures, Derek and I stood in the doorway of their room, watching their peaceful sleeping faces.

"They're perfect," I whispered, leaning back against Derek's chest as his arms encircled me.

"They are," he agreed, his lips brushing the top of my head. "Just like their mother."

I turned in his arms to face him, reaching up to trace the strong line of his jaw. "I love you, Derek Stone. Every day, I love you more."

His eyes darkened as he bent to capture my lips in a kiss that still held all the passion of our first. "And I love you, Erin. More than life itself."

As we made our way to our bedroom, hand in hand, I reflected on the journey that had brought us here. From enemies to reluctant allies, from mates bound by fate to partners who chose each other every day, we had weathered storms that would have broken weaker bonds.

The life we had built together—this quiet existence away from pack politics, filled with the laughter of our children and the steady certainty of our love—was more precious to me than any power or position could ever be.

And as Derek closed our bedroom door behind us, his eyes gleaming gold in the dim light, I knew with absolute certainty that he felt exactly the same way.
