Devil's Whisper Chapter 34: Lingering Touches
"I got a parcel."
Samuel returned, breaking the comfortable silence that had settled between them. He reached for a small, neatly wrapped box and a letter lying beside it, the paper crinkling under his fingers. "It's from Aunt Clara. You remember her. The psychiatrist in Sydney?"
Kate smiled, taking a sip of her coffee, the warmth spreading through her chest like a gentle tide. "Of course! She always had such great stories about her patients. What's she sending?"
Samuel tore open the envelope, the sound sharp in the quiet kitchen, and began scanning the letter inside. His eyes moved quickly across the page, a slight furrow appearing between his brows. "She mentioned her juniors are joining me at the hospital. Apparently, they're having trouble finding a place to stay and need a spot to crash for a while. She wants me to help them out."
Kate raised an eyebrow, her interest piqued despite the lingering tension from earlier. "So, you're going to be a temporary landlord? That sounds... interesting." She watched his expression carefully, noting how the light from the kitchen window cast shadows across his face.
"Yeah," he replied, a grin spreading across his face. "She really pushed for this. Says they'll get along great, and they're eager to learn from me. They'll be coming next week."
"Sounds like a full house."
Samuel chuckled, leaning towards her. "Honestly, I hate the idea of them coming here." His eyes traveled over her face, lingering on her lips. "It means I'll have to keep my clothes on when you're around. How am I supposed to kiss you with them in the way?"
"Is it always necessary to love me so deeply and madly?" Kate shot back, her heart skipped at his words.
"Absolutely," he replied, his voice dropping to a low murmur that seemed to vibrate through the air between them. "You drive me crazy."
He leaned in closer, his gaze intense as he brushed his fingers lightly along her arm, tracing the curve of her shoulder. The touch sent electricity through her skin, making her momentarily forget about the bruises she was trying to hide.
"Samuel!" she laughed, attempting to sound scolding, but a smile betrayed her.
His thumb grazed her collarbone, sending shivers down her spine. The gentle touch was a stark contrast to the violence of the previous night she experienced. Kate felt her breath catch in her throat. Why did she thought about the ghost monster when he touched him?
"You're just so tempting," he whispered, inches from her lips, his breath warm against her skin.
With a soft kiss, he drew her closer, his hand sliding around her waist in a warm, lingering touch. Samuel's hands traced the curve of Kate's waist as he drew her closer, their coffee forgotten on the counter. Their faces as their lips met in a deeper, more urgent kiss. Kate's fingers tangled in his hair, her body arching into his touch as the world around them faded away.
"You're beautiful," he whispered against her neck, his breath warm on her skin. Kate shivered as his lips traced a path along her collarbone, careful to avoid the tender spots she was hiding. Her head fell back, eyes closing as she lost herself in the sensation.
They stumbled toward the bedroom, leaving a trail of soft sighs and whispered endearments. Samuel's shirt joined Kate's blazer on the floor, their skin warm against each other in the dim light. He lifted her onto the bed with gentle strength, his eyes dark with desire as he gazed down at her.
Kate pulled him close, their bodies fitting together perfectly as they had countless times before. The familiar scent of his cologne mixed with the lingering aroma of coffee, creating an intoxicating blend that made her head spin. Their kisses grew more passionate, hands exploring familiar territory with renewed appreciation.
Time seemed to slow as they moved together, lost in their own world of tender touches and passionate embraces. In these moments, Kate could almost forget about her secrets, about the case, about everything except the way Samuel made her feel.
Later, as they lay tangled in the sheets, Samuel traced lazy patterns on her back. The city lights filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow across their intertwined forms. Kate rested her head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat slow to a steady rhythm, feeling more at peace than she had in days.
"See? That's what happens when you drive me crazy," he murmured, a playful smile dancing in his eyes as he watched her gather herself.
Kate laughed softly, gently pressing a hand to his chest, feeling his heartbeat strong and steady beneath her palm. "Hey, hold on, doctor. Remember, you can come over anytime"—she gestured playfully between them—"but not now. I really have to get to the library; there's some important work waiting for me."
"Important work?" He feigned disappointment, though she could see genuine reluctance in his eyes. "You're really going to choose work over this?" He motioned to the space between them, his gestures theatrical but his meaning clear. "Is there something more important than us?"
"Well, no, nothing more important than us," she admitted, her expression softening as she looked at him, trying to ignore the weight of her secrets. "But I really need to get this done today." She started to pull up her clothes and moved toward the door.
"Fine," he sighed, releasing her but not before giving her shoulders a gentle squeeze that lingered just long enough to make her reconsider leaving. "Just remember, when you're done, I'll be here, ready as always."
She laughed, shaking her head as she opened the door, the cool air from the hallway rushing in. "Just don't hold your breath, Doctor Samuel."
"You realize I'm a doctor too, right? I'm busy, but the way you're busy? That's no match for me." His words carried a hint of pride mixed with gentle teasing.
Kate laughed, glancing back at him, her hair catching the light. "Shall I take that as a compliment?"
"Definitely," he replied, a mischievous grin on his face that made him look boyish despite his professional status. Just then, a thought crossed her mind, one she knew would disrupt their playful mood but needed to be said.
"Oh! I almost forgot to tell you—Jason reached out about collaborating on that latest case I'm covering," she said, watching his reaction carefully.
The playful atmosphere shifted instantly, like a cloud passing over the sun. Samuel's brow furrowed, creating those familiar lines of concern she both loved and dreaded. "Jason? That cop? Stay away from him, Kate—I don't trust him."
"Are you jealous?" she teased, a playful smirk on her lips, trying to lighten the sudden tension.
"Not jealous," he insisted, though the tension in his voice gave him away like a tell in poker. "Okay, maybe a little. But I'll admit it—I'm possessive."
"Possessive, huh?"
Samuel leaned down, resting his forearm on the open door. "Intense, maybe. But only because I know what I've got," he said, his gaze warm and steady, filled with an emotion that made her heart skip. "Drive safe, and try not to get into too much trouble WITHOUT me."
