Jason's face turned serious, cutting in their conversation.

"So what's the message? What exactly are we looking at here?"

Kate let out a breath, running a hand through her hair as she pieced it together in her mind. "The first quatrain... it's a clue. The killer combined the verses to tell us his next victim is a girl. She's living near a river, with a garden." Her finger traced the lines as she spoke. "He's already picked her, made his plans. And he thinks he's got it all figured out. After he does what he needs to do, he'll just slip away, like nothing happened."

"So, he's playing with us, using poetry to leave clues? Making it into some kind of sick game?" Jason's voice low.

"Exactly," Kate said firmly. "He wants to make it hard for us to get a clear read on his intentions. This is his way of toying with us."

Jason was already on his phone, fingers moving quickly. "So we're looking for houses by the river, with gardens. Shouldn't be too many, right?"

"That's what I'm thinking," Kate replied, pacing back and forth, anxiety creeping in like a cold tide. "But it's not just about finding her. We're on a clock. If the killer's giving us this clue, then he's planning to move soon. We have to find her before it's too late."

Rodrick's voice was quieter, but no less urgent. "What if, like last time, the killer sends the victim a warning letter? Jason, can you talk to Bob about making the letter public? We could put it in the paper, and run it on the news. If anyone gets that letter, they'll know to call the cops."

Jason looked up from his phone, his expression grim. "I'll talk to him. But we have to move fast." He turned to Kate, searching her face. "You're sure this is the right path? That we're not chasing shadows?"

Kate's eyes narrowed, certainty hardening her voice. "It has to be. If he's using poetry to guide us, then he's giving us a window into his next move. We can't let that slip away."

"But it's getting late," Rodrick said, a note of concern in his voice.

Kate's frustration flared, hot and sharp, and she snapped, "We don't have time to wait! An innocent girl's life is at risk. We need to find her, and we need to find her now."

Jason gave a firm nod, his jaw set. "We'll get on it right away."

But as Kate stood there, her mind raced—not just with the urgency of the case, but with the dread creeping into her chest like black ice. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. Her thoughts kept circling back to her house—her empty house. The place where she had been alone too many nights, the place where that goat-headed ghost had tormented her before. Where it had sat on her pillow, grinning with those impossible teeth.

Kate hesitated, her resolve cracking for a moment like thin ice under pressure. Her hands clenched into fists, but the fear was there, just beneath the surface, threatening to bubble up and overwhelm her.

"I can't do this alone tonight," she muttered, almost to herself, the words escaping before she could stop them.

Rodrick caught her hesitation. "Kate... what's wrong?" His tone softened with concern.

She shook her head, the fear in her eyes flickering like a candle in the wind. "I can't stay there. Not tonight. Not with what's been happening." Her voice dropped to a whisper, as if speaking the words too loudly might make them more real. "I—I feel like he's going to come back. The ghost... the one with the goat's head. I can't stay in that house alone, not with everything going on. I can't."

Rodrick looked like he wanted to say something, but the words didn't come. He could see the raw fear in her eyes, something he'd never witnessed in her before. The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken understanding.

Jason's voice cut through the silence, practical and grounding. "Kate, if you're that shaken, you should get out of there. I'll have someone watch the house." He paused, taking a pointed glance at Rodrick before continuing, his tone carefully casual. "If you don't want to be alone, you could always stay with me."

The tension in the room shifted, something passing between the three of them that went beyond professional concern. Rodrick's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.

Kate nodded slowly, swallowing the lump in her throat. She couldn't risk her emotions getting in the way, not now, not when a girl's life was on the line. But deep down, she knew she couldn't spend another night in that house, couldn't face those empty rooms and waiting shadows.

Her eyes flicked between the two men, and slowly shook her head.

"Thanks, but no. I'm checking into a motel," she said, her voice quiet but firm, deliberately neutral. "Just for a few hours. I need to clear my head. I can't think straight in that house."

Jason's jaw clenched at her refusal, a flicker of hurt crossing his features before he masked it with professional detachment. "Fine. But at least let me send a patrol car to check on you periodically. We can't risk—"

"I don't need a babysitter, Jason," Kate cut him off, perhaps more sharply than she intended. The strain of the night was wearing on her. "I just need some space to think."

"Space to think?" Jason's voice rose slightly, frustration finally breaking through. "Kate, you just told us you saw some kind of... ghost with a goat's head. You're clearly shaken up, and now you want to be alone in some motel? That's not—"

"Jason." Rodrick's voice was quiet but firm, a warning in his tone. "She's made her decision."

Jason turned to Rodrick, his eyes flashing. "Oh, so you're fine with this? With her putting herself at risk when there's a killer out there who's already broken into her house twice?"

"What I'm fine with," Rodrick replied evenly, "is respecting Kate's judgment. She knows what she needs right now."

Kate watched the exchange, exhaustion settling over her like a heavy blanket. "Look, Jason—I appreciate the concern. But right now, we need to focus on finding this girl. That's what matters." She grabbed her keys from the table, the metal cold against her palm. "I'll check in regularly, okay? But we're wasting time here."

Jason took a step forward. "Kate, be careful."

Rodrick studied her, then nodded. "Whatever's going on... we'll be here, okay? We're all in this together."

Kate gave a tight smile, though the fear still lingered beneath it like a dark current under still water. "Thanks," she said, and then turned toward the door. "Let's go find this girl."
