Devil's Whisper Chapter 64: A Silent Cry

7 min 129K views

Jason drove the car down Franklin Road, his knuckles white against the steering wheel as his eyes methodically scanned the quiet residential area approaching Henley Beach.

The salty ocean breeze whispered through the slightly cracked window, carrying with it the distinct, laid-back atmosphere of one of Adelaide's most popular coastal spots. Seagulls circled lazily overhead, their cries barely audible over the soft purr of the engine and the occasional rustling of palm fronds in the afternoon wind.

Henley Beach was known for its pristine sand, crystal-clear water, and a line of top-rated seafood restaurants that stretched along the boardwalk. The restaurants' outdoor patios were usually filled with tourists and locals alike, their laughter mixing with the crash of waves and the clink of wine glasses. For most, it was the perfect spot to kick back, enjoy a cold beer, and savor fresh fish while watching the sun paint the sky in brilliant oranges and pinks.

But not today.

Today, the beach would serve as the backdrop for something much darker.

After about ten minutes of driving past identical palm-lined streets, Jason pulled the car over to the curb and glanced around, his practiced eyes noting every detail - the position of nearby cars, the few pedestrians walking their dogs, the security cameras mounted on corner posts. He could feel the tension rising in his chest as he checked the address on his phone once more, the blue dot on the map confirming they had arrived at their destination.

"I think this is it," he said, pointing toward a large house surrounded by towering palm trees, its front yard a manicured lawn that stretched toward an imposing stone wall.

The house itself was a sprawling two-story Mediterranean-style structure with large windows that looked out toward the ocean, its cream-colored walls catching the afternoon sun. A sleek BMW sat in the circular driveway, its polished surface reflecting the cloudless sky.

Kate, sitting beside him in the passenger seat, squinted out the window, taking in the sight. Her usually animated face was unnaturally still, her fingers absently tracing the outline of something in her jacket pocket.

"Yep. That's the one," she said, her voice flat, devoid of its usual warmth. "It's right on the water, just a few hundred yards from the beach. You can see the ocean from here."

"This place is hard to find. There's a hundred houses like this along the coastline." Jason pulled out his binoculars, scanning the perimeter of the property with practiced efficiency.

"Hmm," Kate muttered, her focus locked on the house in front of them. Her hand had stopped moving, now gripping whatever was in her pocket with white-knuckled intensity. The tension between them was palpable, years of partnership allowing them to communicate volumes in silence.

The quiet was interrupted by the unmistakable sound of police sirens, their wailing cutting through the peaceful afternoon like a knife. Before they could get out of the car, several police cruisers pulled up to the curb, their lights casting alternating patterns of red and blue across the pristine lawns. Jason looked over at Kate, seeing his own surprise and resignation mirrored in her eyes.

Through the windshield, they watched as the doors of one of the police vehicles opened with deliberate slowness. Oliver, a tall officer with deep-set eyes, stepped out and immediately spotted them. His hand rested casually on his holstered weapon as he approached their car, his badge catching the sunlight with each measured step.

"Sir," Oliver greeted as he approached, his footsteps crunching on the sun-bleached pavement. His eyes swept the surroundings in practiced arcs before locking onto Jason, the weight of his revelation evident in his stance. "This is the house. The one we've been investigating."

Jason's eyes narrowed as he took in the large, well-kept property. Its windows reflecting the afternoon sun like knowing eyes. "You sure this is it? Looks like just another beach house to me."

Oliver nodded solemnly, his jaw set. "No mistake. This is the residence of the abducted girl."

"Where are the parents?"

The salty breeze carried the scent of jasmine from the manicured gardens, an incongruously pleasant detail in the unfolding nightmare.

Oliver jerked his head toward a man and a woman standing a few feet away by the police cars, their figures casting long shadows on the pristine driveway. The flashing lights from the police vehicles painted their faces in alternating shades of red and blue, adding to their ghostly appearance.

The man was in his fifties, wearing a well-tailored grey suit that probably cost more than most officers' monthly salary. His face was drawn and tight with stress, deep lines etched around his mouth and eyes. His hands were folded in front of him, fingers interlaced so tightly the knuckles had turned white, and he kept glancing around nervously like a man expecting shadows to come alive.

The woman beside him, much younger, looked out of place in a sleek, knee-length bodycon dress that clung to her figure like a second skin. Her makeup was perfect – too perfect for someone whose stepdaughter had just been abducted – and though she was clearly distraught, there was something almost too composed about the way she held herself, as if she were performing grief rather than experiencing it. Jason couldn't help but wonder what she was hiding behind that carefully constructed facade.

Jason and Kate both got out of the car, the doors closing with soft thuds that seemed too loud in the tense atmosphere. They walked toward the parents, their shoes clicking against the pavement in perfect sync. The father looked up at them, his eyes red-rimmed and heavy with emotion, reflecting a pain that seemed to age him beyond his years.

"Hello, sir," Jason greeted, his voice calm but firm, practiced from years of similar conversations. "I'm Officer Jason. This is my partner, Kate." Kate nodded beside him, her expression professional but compassionate.

"Yes, yes, of course," the man replied quickly, his voice cracking like thin ice. His hands trembled as he spoke. "Sir, my name is Shawn Paula, and this is my wife, Ella Paula. Nearly two hours ago, I returned from my office to get ready for the Royal Club party. It was prearranged that my wife, Ella, and our daughter, Sasha, would accompany me. Upon my return, I headed straight to my room to prepare. After getting ready, I asked Ella to call Sasha as we were running late."

"Ella went to Sasha's room, and after two minutes, I heard her screams. They weren't just any screams – they were the kind that turn your blood to ice." Shawn's voice quavered. "I rushed to Sasha's room and upon entering, I saw blood splatters everywhere. They looked fresh, still glistening in the afternoon light." His hands shook as he mimed the scene.

"I moved inside the room and saw a large chart-sized paper pasted on one of the walls, with many things drawn on it. In the center, a picture of Sasha was pasted, surrounded by various symbols, and the words 'Tamam Shud' were written in blood. I don't know what the meaning of 'Tamam Shud' is or how to pronounce it. I searched the whole house, but couldn't find my daughter. She's nowhere," Shawn said, tears welling up in his eyes, his composure finally cracking.

Beside him, Ella remained oddly still, her manicured nails digging into her palms.

"Hmm... let's go inside," Jason said, signaling for Kate to follow him. His expression remained neutral, but his mind was already cataloging the inconsistencies in their story, the subtle tells in their body language.

They entered the property through the ornate iron gates, greeted by a large, well-maintained lawn on their right side. The grass was a perfect emerald green, each blade precisely trimmed. Continuing along the marbled driveway, they made their way towards the house, their footsteps echoing in the heavy afternoon air. The scent of freshly cut grass mingled with the salt breeze.
