Devil's Whisper Chapter 49: The Unseen Visitor

6 min 129K views

Someone is in the house.

Would it be the killer? The thought kept rising in Kate's mind like black water, threatening to drown her reason. Her training screamed at her to move, to act, to survive, but her body remained frozen in that eternal moment between realization and reaction, muscles locked in a battle between fight and flight.

Just as she was suffocating from fear, the doorbell rang, cutting through the tension like a knife. The sudden, ordinary sound jolted her back to reality. Kate rushed downstairs, practically stumbling in her haste, her heart thundering against her ribs. She opened it to find Jason standing there, dressed casually in dark blue jeans and a light blue shirt that seemed jarringly normal against the backdrop of her terror.

"Hello, Kate, I got your message." Jason said, stepping inside. His voice was calm, but Kate could hear the edge of concern in it. His hand briefly touched her shoulder—a gesture of reassurance that lingered just a moment too long.

"Hey, Jason," Kate replied, trying to steady her breath. She glanced outside quickly, noting the black SUV parked at the curb.

She heard footsteps and looked back at the door just as Rodrick appeared, his face drawn with worry, his broad shoulders filling the doorframe. His eyes caught the slight distance between Kate and Jason, and something flickered across his expression.

"Just making sure you're okay, Kate. You seemed very distracted at work," he said softly, his eyes scanning her face, looking for any sign of injury. "What's wrong?" His voice was thick with concern, almost intimate in its intensity. He moved closer, unconsciously positioning himself between her and Jason.

At that moment, Jason spoke again, his professional tone carrying an undercurrent of authority. "Did the killer try to harm you?"

Kate shook her head, she is not aware of the tension building in the small space. "No, not me. The killer came here when I wasn't home. But when I got back... there was no one."

Rodrick's eyes narrowed, a dark flicker of frustration passing over his features like a storm cloud. He stepped inside, his gaze briefly flicking to Jason. "Oh, Officer Jason. You're here too." The words carried a hint of territorial challenge beneath their professional courtesy.

Jason gave a nod, his lips pulling into a small, almost imperceptible smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Yeah. She called me in."

Kate quickly explained, "Since everyone is here, I wanted both of you to see something." Her voice trembled slightly, the fear of what she'd discovered momentarily overshadowing the subtle undercurrents between the two men.

"Lead the way," Jason said, his hand moving instinctively toward the small of her back to guide her, but stopping short as Rodrick cleared his throat.

"Maybe I should go first," Rodrick suggested, his detective's instincts taking over. "Just in case." He was already moving toward the hallway, his broader frame somehow making the room feel smaller.

Jason's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. Kate moved between them, her focus returning to the horror waiting in her bedroom. "Please, both of you, just... follow me."

As they move forward, the temperature seemed to drop with each step. Kate could feel both men close behind her, their presence are really reassuring. The creaking of the floor under their weight seemed unnaturally loud in the silence.

As they reached the door to her bedroom, Kate paused, her hand gripping the banister tighter. "It's in my bedroom," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "The killer left something here."

Both men exchanged glances, their professional rivalry momentarily forgotten in the face of genuine concern. They'd both seen what the killer was capable of. They knew what those symbols meant.

Jason pulled on a pair of disposable gloves, his movements deliberate and practiced. The snap of latex against skin echoed in the hallway like a gunshot.

"Kate," he said, his tone now all business, the earlier warmth replaced by professional detachment, "tell us exactly how you found this paper. And why do you think the killer left it here?"

Kate swallowed hard before speaking, her voice slightly shaky but forcing herself to be precise. "I found it a few minutes before I called you. I didn't touch it, though. Left it exactly where it was. Just... sitting there, like the killer had meant for me to find it."

She stepped aside, pointing toward the bed. The plain white piece of paper sat on the bed, almost innocuous in its simplicity. But Kate knew better.

Rodrick stepped forward, inspecting it carefully, his face unreadable as stone. "Hmm. This looks almost identical to the paper the killer left on the wall last time. Same size, same color."

"It's the same. It has to be."

Jason, still focused on the paper, turned toward her. "Do you still have the first one? The one the killer left on the wall?"

"Yes," Kate replied, her eyes darting toward her study, where that first harbinger of horror still lay locked away. "It's in my study."

"Go get it. Bring it here. And turn off the lights in the room. I need to check this under UV light for fingerprints."

Kate nodded quickly, her stomach tight with nerves as she walked to the wall and switched off the light.

The room fell into darkness, the only illumination coming from Jason's UV flashlight. He aimed it at the paper, the dim blue glow flickering like the dying embers of a fire. The paper seemed to come alive under the light, its edges glowing faintly with an otherworldly phosphorescence.

Kate was on the verge of stepping back into the hallway when something caught her eye. Something that made her blood run cold and her mind recoil from what it was seeing.

Her breath caught in her throat as she froze, muscles locking in primal terror.

There, sitting on her pillow—on her pillow—was the creature. The goat-headed monster, its eyes glowing a sickly yellow in the dark like twin flames from hell. It was sitting cross-legged, its posture unnaturally calm, like some twisted monk in meditation. The creature's black fur glistened in the faint blue light like oil on water, and its twisted, jagged horns spiraled grotesquely from its skull like thorny crowns.

Kate's pulse pounded in her ears as the creature's gaze locked onto her, pinning her in place with ancient, knowing malevolence. Its mouth stretched into a sickening grin, revealing sharp, jagged teeth that seemed to reflect impossible light. A low, guttural laugh bubbled up from somewhere deep within its chest, a sound that shouldn't have been possible from any earthly throat, sending a wave of nausea crashing through Kate's body.

“I found you again."
