Devil's Whisper Chapter 54: Whispers of the Watchers
"The leader of the Yarrabura tribe is also the leader of The Watchers."
Jason revealed, causing Kate to jump in surprise. She never thought this message could be so astonishing.
"Oh... I wasn't expecting that," she admitted after a pause, her voice full of disbelief and wonder.
"Me neither," Jason agreed. He took a moment to collect his thoughts before continuing. "It seems there are even more layers to this mystery than we initially believed."
Kate leaned forward, her eyes narrowed with intense focus. "What else did you find out?"
Jason took a deep breath before launching into his explanation. "Oliver told me that from the tapped phone recordings, he discovered The Watchers' cult had been operating in the shadows for decades. Their primary mission is to protect the original version of the Rubaiyat and keep its existence hidden from the public eye."
"Again with the Rubaiyat..." Kate murmured, her brow furrowed in contemplation. "What is so vitally important about that book that an entire cult was formed with the sole purpose of protecting it?"
"I don't know," Jason admitted, a hint of frustration creeping into his own voice. "But there's more. Oliver also revealed that Jira, the leader of the Yarrabura tribe, Jim, the pawn shop owner, and Albert, the businessman in Adelaide, are all high-ranking elders within The Watchers organization. And there are allegedly ten other members, but their identities remain unknown at this time."
Kate's eyes widened as she processed this new information. The web of connections seemed to be growing more complex by the minute.
"But that's not all," Jason added, his tone grave. "Jim and Clark were overheard discussing Ryder's murder on the phone. Based on the snippets of conversation, it sounded like they're both actively searching for members of the Pathway of Ascendants, though the reasons why remain unclear."
"Wait… why would Jim and Clark be looking for members of the Pathway of Ascendants?"
He shook his head, his expression thoughtful. "To find out, we need to investigate Clark further. I have a feeling he may possess information that will lead us in the right direction and help us unravel this tangled knot."
"Hmm… you're right," Kate agreed, her mind turning over the possibilities. She paused for a moment, then spoke again, her voice low and serious. "But I was thinking about something else. Something that ties all of these seemingly disparate threads together."
Jason raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "And what's that?"
Kate took a deep breath before speaking, her eyes locked with Jason's. "We started down this path to find out who killed my father after he began investigating the Pathway of Ascendants and their rituals. We assumed someone from within the cult killed him to protect their secrets, and that the same person was likely responsible for Ryder's murder as well. Our goal has been to uncover the connection between my father, Ryder, and the killer," she explained, her voice trembling slightly with emotion. "But now, with the revelation of The Watchers and their connection to the Rubaiyat, I can't help but feel like we're on the cusp of something even bigger than we initially believed. Something that could change everything we thought we knew."
Jason nodded slowly, his expression grave. "I think you're right, Kate. We may have stumbled onto a conspiracy far more vast and dangerous than we ever imagined. But no matter what, we'll face it together and uncover the truth. For your father, for Ryder, and for everyone else caught up in this web of secrets and lies."
Kate nodded, her own expression mirroring Jason's resolve. But a flicker of confusion crossed her face as she processed what he had just told her. "Now, you're saying that Jim and Clark—members of The Watchers—are actively looking for the Pathway of Ascendants cult? Why would The Watchers be so interested in them specifically? And why are they so focused on Ryder's murder in particular?"
Jason met Kate's eyes as he spoke, his words ringing with conviction. "Those are the right questions to be asking, Kate. And I'm sure Clark has the answers we need. He's our best chance at unraveling this mystery and figuring out how all these pieces fit together."
As he uttered the word "together," Jason felt a slight catch in his throat. He paused for a brief moment, his gaze lingering on Kate's face a heartbeat longer than necessary. In that fleeting instant, a flicker of emotion danced behind his eyes, something more than just professional camaraderie.
Kate frowned slightly, not entirely convinced. "But why are you so set on investigating Clark specifically? Couldn't Jim potentially give us answers too? He's also a member of The Watchers, after all."
Jason's expression hardened. "Trust me, Jim won't talk. He's one of the elders of The Watchers, and he'd sooner die than betray his cult. I've seen how these types of groups operate—their code of silence is absolute, especially among the leadership. But Clark... he's younger, more ambitious, and less tied to the cult's rigid ways. With the right pressure, he'll crack. I'm sure of it."
Kate considered this for a moment before nodding slowly. "Your theory does sound valid, based on what we know so far," she acknowledged. "I suppose it makes sense to focus our efforts on the weakest link, so to speak."
"Exactly," Jason agreed, a hint of grim satisfaction in his voice. "I've been investigating cults and criminal organizations for over a decade. I know how to read people, how to find the cracks in their armor. And I'm telling you, Clark is our way in. He's the one who will give us everything we need to blow this whole conspiracy wide open."
Kate took a deep breath, steeling herself for what lay ahead. "Alright then. I guess it's time for us to pay a little visit to Jira and Clark and get some answers, one way or another."
Jason started to nod, but then his eyes widened as a sudden realization hit him. "Oh, Kate, I can't believe I almost forgot to mention this. You remember those warning letters—the one Ryder found in his car, and the two that the killer left here at your house? I sent them all to the forensic lab for analysis. And this morning, I got a call from Dr. Agastya with the results. You're not going to believe this, but the circles of continuity drawn on the two letters you received? They were made with Ryder's blood. But the circle on Ryder's own letter... that was drawn with blood from an unknown person."
Kate stared at him in horror, her face draining of color. "I... I didn't realize someone could have such a twisted, sadistic mind," she whispered, her fists clenching in impotent rage and frustration. "To toy with us like this, to use the blood of his victims in some kind of sick game..."
"I know," Jason said grimly. "Sending blood-soaked letters, then vanishing without a trace like a ghost... What is this psychopath playing at? What's his end goal in all of this?" He shook his head, his voice calm but heavy with the weight of the unspeakable evil they were facing.
A sudden thought struck Kate, and she looked up at Jason with horrified eyes. "You know, there's a chilling pattern here that I'm just now seeing. Think about it—the killer targeted my father first, sending him a warning letter before murdering him. Then he did the same thing with Ryder. And now, those letters addressed to me... It's like he's shifting his focus, zeroing in on a new target each time. But why? Why hasn't he come after me directly yet, like he did with Dad and Ryder?" Her voice rose with urgency as the implications sank in.
Jason's face paled as he considered this. "You're right, it's like he's taunting us, staying one step ahead and daring us to catch him before he strikes again. The letters, the clues, the goddamn circles drawn in blood... it's all part of his twisted game. He's showing off his supposed brilliance while we scramble in the dark to piece it all together."
He ran a hand over his face, looking suddenly exhausted. "But you raise a good point about him not coming after you directly yet. If he's following the same pattern as before, it could mean that his next intended victim has already received a warning letter, and we just don't know it yet. Or maybe he has something different in mind this time. Either way, we need to act fast before he has a chance to kill again."
Kate shuddered, wrapping her arms around herself as if to ward off the chill of dread that had settled over her. "You're probably right," she said quietly. "As much as I hate to admit it, this monster seems to have everything planned out. Every move calculated for maximum impact, maximum suffering. He wants us to know that he's the one in control, that he can manipulate and destroy lives on a whim while we're left with nothing but questions and grief."
She took a shaky breath, her eyes hardening with resolve. "But he's not as untouchable as he thinks. We're going to stop him, Jason. We're going to make him pay for everything he's done, for every innocent life he's stolen. My father, Ryder, and whoever else he has in his sights... we'll get justice for them all."
Jason reached out and squeezed her shoulder, offering silent comfort and support. "We will, Kate. I promise you that. No matter how long it takes or how deep this conspiracy goes, we won't rest until the truth is brought to light and the killer is rotting behind bars where he belongs."
"I hope you're right," Kate whispered, allowing herself a moment of vulnerability before straightening her spine and squaring her shoulders once more. "But first things first—we need to have a little chat with Jira and Clark. Give me five minutes to change, and then we can head over there. It's time to start getting some real answers."
Jason nodded in agreement, already pulling out his phone.
"Sounds good. I'll make a few calls in the meantime, see if any of my contacts have heard anything that might shed some light on this whole mess."
Kate walked out of the lounge, her eyes scanning the surrounding space. "Sometimes, it feels like there’s no one here, like that bloody monster has vanished… But then it lingers in every corner of the house," she thought, a chill creeping up her spine.
She felt a strange sense of relief that the monster hadn’t attacked her since morning, which made her all the more eager to leave the house. Lately, she’d been staying away more often, convinced the monster only targeted her when she was at home. Oddly, she never encountered it or had any issues when she was elsewhere.
