The White Moonlight Chapter 5

3 min 35.1K views

The next day, while Rebecca was eating breakfast, the morning news broadcast a report: "In the Myawaddy region of Myanmar, more than eight hundred people involved in gambling and fraud have been arrested and brought back to the country. Unfortunately, during the previous rescue operation, one of our law enforcement officers tragically died!"

She had been looking down, but her gaze locked onto the screen.

The footage had been processed so the personnel couldn't be seen, but I knew those criminals were among them.

Rebecca quickly grabbed her phone and dialed my number. Surprisingly, my broken phone that had been unreachable suddenly connected.

A strange male voice came through: "Hello, this is Elm City..."

"Click." Before the other person could finish, she abruptly hung up.

Brandon noticed something unusual flash in Rebecca's eyes and pulled her into his arms.

"Are you worried about Daniel? Don't be! Didn't you say he was Special Forces and really capable? Someone that skilled couldn't possibly have anything happen to them. He's probably just trying to scare you, playing games."

Rebecca steadied her breathing: "You're right. This must be Daniel playing tricks behind the scenes."

However, the next second, her phone rang. It was my number.

Looking at the caller ID, Rebecca seemed afraid and actually choked before answering.

"Hello, this is the Elm City Police Department. Are you Daniel Brooks' wife?"

Rebecca asked in a flat voice: "What happened to him?"

The other person hesitated: "Captain Brooks had an incident in Myanmar. He's gone. Can you come to the station?"

Rebecca narrowed her eyes, clearly not believing it: "Are these games fun?" She hung up the phone.

The phone slipped from her hand and fell to the floor. Brandon reached out to pull her up, but she pushed him away forcefully.

She practically leaped to her feet. Brandon immediately chased after her and grabbed her wrist, but was shaken off. The confusion in his eyes turned to incomprehension after being rejected.

Rebecca bit down hard: "Don't get in my way!"

Soon, Rebecca grabbed her coat and rushed to the family housing complex.

Seeing her angry expression, I guessed she thought I was hiding and deliberately toying with her, which made her upset.

As soon as the door opened, she saw my memorial photo. She laughed mockingly: "Really putting on a show—even set up a memorial photo."

But as she laughed, her expression froze. She walked over to the photo and lifted it high above her head.

My sister tried to stop her: "Rebecca Meyer, what are you doing? Don't you know to respect the dead? Put it down now."

However, Rebecca gritted her teeth and violently threw the photo down, smashing it into pieces.

My sister watched my photo shatter into fragments. Her eyes reddened and tears streamed down her face as she tried to piece it back together with her hands, only to be cut by the glass, blood flowing everywhere.

She looked up at Rebecca, who was still in a daze, and screamed hysterically at her: "Pick it up! Pick up my brother's photo!"

Only then did Rebecca snap back to reality. She looked at my sister with cold eyes and pointed at her: "You two siblings really are birds of a feather. Do you know how terrible your act is?"
