Saving Tragedy Chapter 109

**Sawyer's POV**

I was still in total shock at what had just happened, as Millie hushed our crying baby, walking back and forth across the cabin in which we had now been subjected to...

I continued to curse under my breath, muttering profanities trying to come to terms with how this whole operation could have been possible!

At first, I instantly thought to break a window in here, and to run, but then I remembered that Millie still couldn't shift after giving birth - not to mention us trying to carry the baby with us too - but it was almost as if they knew that, the way they had just locked us in here so carelessly...

Bastards!

There was no use in trying to get them out.

We were completely surrounded and it would be certain death for the three of us.

The heat inside of the train was stale with the scent of blood invading my nostrils above all else... I hoped that most of my men had made it out, since they didn't seem interested in anyone but the three of us, but it was hard to be sure due to everything happening so damn fast!

That moment, the train had finally lurched to a final stop inside of one of the caves, and everything had gone still...

Too still.

Is this their hide out?

The low hum of the engine had cut out, plunging us into an eerie silence, broken only by the occasional shuffle of boots against the metal floor and the wailing of our baby, as my muscles tightened in defence for my mate and child.

My body still ached from the initial fight, the moment they had caught us off guard with their surprise attack - leaving us all baffled as to how they had even got on board of the damn train in the first place!

"W-What will we do?! They're going to kill us! The baby!" Millie chokes on a sob, clutching our somewhat settled daughter to her chest.

The thought alone made my stomach heave...

"They won't kill us... they've locked us in here over everyone else - and no doubt for their leverage. I won't let them hurt either of you!" I tell her firmly, ignoring the uncertainty that tinged my words.

The truth was, we were outnumbered, and there would only be so much of a fight I could put up if it came down to it...

I coughed heavily, clutching at my ribs that were starting to bruise, my arms sore from struggling against the bastards who had overpowered us in only minutes flat.

"Who's doing this to us?!" Millie moves to sink down in to a chair beside me, being the furthest away from the door now as we both sat and awaited our fate together.

"It was him. It was Jacob. I only hope that one of our guards saw him to let Ashton know... I trust he will come for us, and so we just have to sit tight." I explain, forcing my words to sound strong in order to comfort her.

Jacob's name alone made my hands curl up into fists on my lap.

I had barely caught a glimpse of him when we were ambushed, but it was enough. Enough to know exactly who was behind this betrayal - or who was at least playing a major part of it.

The man who had once been called Alpha. The man who we had all respected for years on end growing up. Had turned out to be nothing more than a demonic man, operating solely on pure evil intent.

But it seems that we had all underestimated him, and the influence he must still have over a number of wolves across the country even years after he was caught... and whoever had willingly helped him, had already showed us that they meant serious business with this ordeal!

A heavy clang echoed throughout the train as I instantly stood to my full height, keeping Millie behind me.

"Stay back with Elsie!” I demand, as Millie nods absently, hugging her tight.

It wasn't long after when the main doors to our section was unlocked and yanked open, light from the cave entrance spilling in for just a moment before a figure struggled his way inside.

I watched him carefully, escorted by another three guys, as I met his cold, calculating gaze.

It was Jacob himself… or what was left of him, shall I say.

He looked different from when I had last saw him a couple of years back in his cell — even skinnier, rougher, his beard unkempt, his face lined with exhaustion, his skin dry, scratchy as I watched him hobble forward with the use of a walking stick for support.

Ashton had evidently put the man through total hell, and it was nothing short of what he had deserved for his crimes, but I couldn’t help but wish that we had just killed him when we first had the chance!

It was laughable really, that somebody this isolated had managed such an escape, but it was clear to anyone who had eyes that this was someone else's doing...

But despite all else, the smugness in his expression was the exact same.

"Well, well," he drawled out shakily, stepping further inside, his boots clicking against the floor. "I have to admit, Sawyer, it was almost too easy wasn't it? This whole performance?"

I didn't move, didn't speak. Just watched him with a heavy scowl etched upon my face.

Jacob tilted his head, glancing around at the state of the train. "I thought Ashton would have trained you better than this. But then again, he never really did care for any other pack other than his own - right?” Jacob mutters, before leaning forward to bring up a ball of phlegm - the talking clearly taking its toll on him.

“How the fuck can you say that after what you did? After how you treated your own pack?! Ashton was the only one who worked to put a stop to the torture of those poor innocent children! I think the one who never cared for anyone but himself - was you!” I spit back, taking the moment to say my piece on his words.

My jaw flexed, as he straightened back up as much as he could, a furious look flashing across his face at my tone.

If he didn’t have hundreds of guards surrounding him in this moment for backup, he knew that I wouldn’t hesitate on snapping his scrawny neck in seconds flat, and believe me - I so wanted to!

He let out a low chuckle next, or tried to, with it sounding more like a scratching vinyl record, but he shifted to glance behind me next to Millie…

My entire body tensed as he took a slow step in her direction, his eyes flicking to the small bundle in her arms.

“DON’T!” I warn, deciding in that moment that if I didn’t have enough strength to take out every single guard, that I could at least have time to kill him if he put his hands on my mate or the baby…

I wouldn’t allow it!

"I didn’t know you started a family… how sweet." He drawled, taking another wobble forward.

"Stay the fuck away from them," I stepped aside, covering them completely as I drowned out the sound of Millie’s terrified sobs from behind me.

Jacob smirked, amused. "Relax, Sawyer. I'm not a total monster. If I wanted them dead, then it would've happened already. But the three of you are far more valuable alive!" He hissed, as the guards around him also began to chuckle, laughing at how outnumbered we were against them.

"What the fuck is it that you want?" I demanded, keeping my breathing steady.

Jacob exhaled out through his nose, shaking his head as if disappointed. "You really don't know? You took everything from me. My title. My pack. My life. My respect! Who do you think you are? Just because Ashton appointed you as Alpha, doesn’t make you a real one - we both know that!" His voice hardened, the mask of amusement slipping for just a second. "Did all of you really think I was just going to rot away in that cell while you played Alpha?" He seethed, as I was the next to laugh.

"So you want your throne back? That’s it? None of your pack members want you…” I chuckle darkly, mocking him and gaining the exact reaction I had hoped to get.

“I don’t need them… I plan to rebuild with the remnants of Moon Lust… we will make a comeback, stronger and bigger than ever! We will be unmatched!” He yells, before entering himself into another asthma attack - draining away any ounce of intimidation he felt that he had against me.

I allowed him to catch his breath, shaking my head and clicking my tongue in amusement… waiting for the moment that he looked back in to my eyes-

“But you know he’s coming for you right? You’re scared of him aren’t you?” I hum, as his brows furrow into a dark glare.

“I fear no one!” He shouts in defense, as I roll my eyes and smirk.

“Ashton will catch you… all of you… he loves this, you know? The whole thrill of the hunt? This is what he lives for… but be my guest, you can go ahead and try, but we all know how this shit show is going to play itself out… he’s going to put you in a box, Jacob, I can promise you that much.” I speak calmly, slowly, allowing for each and every word to drown him.

“LOCK THEM UP UNTIL WE HEAD HOME IN THE MORNING!” He snaps, evidently sent over the edge with my words, turning his back on us as he limps out of the train…

The guards rush us, Millie screaming at them not to hurt the baby, as my eyes never leave his retreating figure…

Ashton will get him.

He did it once, he will do it again!

And when he did, hell was going to break loose.
