Saving Tragedy Chapter 118

**Sawyer's POV**

For the first time since this whole nightmare began, Jacob looked afraid.

"Cat got your tongue Jacob? I told you that he'd find you..." I grit out the words, and despite my tone crackling, I still managed to push his buttons the way I had hoped to.

His smug confidence shattered in an instant as the uproar erupted around him. The sound of flesh tearing, bodies hitting the ground, and strangled cries filled the clearing as our numbers seemed to never end.

His head whipped toward his men frantically — his supposed army — but they were falling like prey, their throats slashed before they could even react.

Jacob had walked them right in to a slaughter!

His hands trembled. His eyes darted wildly, searching for control, for dominance, but it was slipping through his fingers like sand.

"Get the three of them inside!" he roared, his voice raw with panic.

Three of his remaining men sprang into action, hands grabbing at me, Millie, and Elsie. Millie screamed as rough fingers tore at her, dragging her away from where she had been frozen in horror. Elsie's wails pierced out in to the air and my body exploded with sheer fury at the sound.

I fought, straining against the hands on me, but I was still weak. My limbs were sluggish, my muscles barely responding to my commands. They hauled me up to my feet, my legs nearly buckling beneath me, but their grip on my arms was relentless - holding me up.

No. No, no, no.

Jacob was panicking now. He wasn't thinking rationally anymore. If he thought Ashton had outplayed him, if he knew he was losing this, then he might just slaughter us all out of pure spite...

One last 'fuck you' to Ashton...

I had to get through to him - he needs to get us out of this mess, and fast!

I clenched my teeth, forcing the last of my strength inward, pushing past the burning agony, past the haze threatening to drag me under in to unconsciousness.

'Ashton? ASHTON?!'

My mind roared through the link, desperate, frantic.

'Tell me that you're getting this?! Jacob's taking us towards the pack house! He's got Millie and Elsie here too — he's going to end us - he knows he's fucking losing this! Ashton can you-'

A voice cut through, steady, cold.

'I know, let him come to me...'

A sharp inhale rattled through my chest from the reply.

Ashton's voice was calm. Unshaken.

'I knew he would run off with you three eventually. I'm already inside waiting. Stay strong - you're doing good!' He reminded me next, as I looked up to see the building coming in to view...

The words sent a pulse of shock through me.

He was always ten steps ahead!

He was right there, in the pack house!

My family will be safe soon enough... I just have to push through!

My pulse hammered in my ears as Jacob hurriedly limped forward, leading his men toward the building that he once called his home, oblivious to the trap that he was walking straight into.

The pack house — now my pack house — stood tall against the morning sun, its windows giving nothing away from the secret laying within...

Jacob had no fucking idea he was walking into the jaws of the most dangerous wolf he had ever lived to meet...

His sworn enemy...

Ashton.

I let out a shaky breath, my mouth tugging up in to a smile ever so slightly before I pushed it back - not wanting to reveal what was happening here...

For the first time since I had been dragged through the dirt like a fucking animal, I felt something other than pain.

I felt the burning desire to witness this man's death. To witness revenge for what he had not only put this pack and myself through, but my mate and newborn daughter.

Jacob was about to feel his own terror...

Jacob limped forward, his breath ragged, his once-proud stance reduced to something frantic — something desperate. He barked orders at the men who were dragging me to hurry up, but there was no confidence behind it anymore. Just fear.

He knew Ashton would sniff him out eventually...

I could still hear the chaos unfolding behind us through the trees — the battle raging on, the rogues being torn apart, the cries of men realising they had followed a dead man into a losing war.

Jacob knew it too. He just hadn't accepted it yet.

The grip on my arms tightened as we neared the entrance, my captors hauling me up the steps with rough tugs as my feet struggled to keep up. My knees nearly buckled, but I refused to give them the satisfaction of seeing me crumble anymore.

Millie stumbled beside me under the hold of one guard, her face streaked with silent tears, Elsie still clutched tightly to her chest. The baby's cries had quieted to small, broken hiccups, as if even she could feel the tension crackling around us in the putrid air.

I felt awful, having tried to get through to her via our own personal mind-link just to tell her that Ashton was here to help us, but I found no luck. She was too shaken up, too disoriented, that she had her mind shut off to everything going on around us...

I wanted to reach out for them. Hold them in my arms. Tell Millie to hold on just a little longer, that it would be over soon. That she would be safe soon.

But I couldn't risk any of them hearing.

I had to play along...

We eventually crossed the threshold, moving through the front door. The moment we stepped inside, the temperature seemed to drop.

It was too quiet.

Jacob didn't notice a thing — not yet. He was too busy slamming the door behind him, locking out the war that he had left his soldiers to suffer in.

His shoulders rose and fell as he sucked in a gulp of air before he turned sharply toward his men.

"Get them three tied up together in the main hall. NOW!" His voice was hoarse, edged with something that almost sounded like dread.

The rogues nodded, yanking us forward, as my eyes darted around to find any sign of Ashton, having no luck as of yet...

This was his game, laying low before he strikes, this was the type of shit the man lived for!

"What's the plan?" One of them dared to ask, as the other forced myself and Millie to sit back to back in the middle of the floor - baby Elsie still in Millie's arms.

"I'm going to burn the three of them to ashes along with this fucking house! If it's the last thing I do!" Jacob yells hoarsely, fumbling around with a set of keys he had found hanging up on the wall hook.

"Go and fetch the petrol canisters from the garage!" He snaps, forcing the correct key in to the third guards hands. "HURRY UP!" He spat.

A rope was wrapped around us next, tighter than what I would have preferred, as Millie began to hyperventilate from behind me - her back suddenly heaving against mine.

"N-No! Please don't! The baby! My poor baby! She doesn't deserve death! Kill us, but just please let her go! Let her live! You're a monster! A fucking monster for this!" She screeched, as I squeezed my eyes shut, knowing that there was nothing I could say to console her in that moment, knowing that I could ruin the plan if I did.

But just as I thought I couldn't take much more of her desperate pleas-

Click...

A single sound. Barely louder than a whisper.

But it was a sound I knew all too well...

A gun being cocked.

Jacob froze, the only other sound being Millie's frantic breaths.

I watched the blood drain from his face as he turned, ever so slowly, toward the staircase.

And there, standing at the top of the landing, was Ashton.

A hunting rifle rested casually in his hands, but his grip was steady, his finger hovering over the trigger like it belonged there. His stance was calm, his expression unreadable — except for the glint of something dangerous in his icy stare.

The wolf who had been waiting for his prey.

"Oh my, lord thank the Moon Goddess!" Millie whispers over and over again, as my hand finds her free one resting behind our backs.

"I tried to mind-link you, you're going to be ok!" I whispered to her, as her sobs broke out.

"Well," Ashton mused, his voice smooth, almost amused as he began to slowly step down from his position, "What should we call this then? Jacob's biggest failure at being an Alpha Part Two?" He laughs, and for the first time ever I felt that I could actually breathe again.

Jacob inhaled sharply, his entire body going rigid. I could see the war happening behind his eyes — flee or fight, run or beg?

But there was no way out of this, he was smart enough to know that.

This was it for him.
