The restaurant was beautiful inside, all warm lighting and soft music, and the host led us to a private table in the back corner that felt secluded from the rest of the dining room.

"This is nice," I said as we sat down.

"I thought we deserved a proper date," she said. "After everything we've been through, I wanted to do something special."

My heart swelled with love for her, for the fact that she'd planned this, that she wanted to celebrate us being okay.

"I love it," I said, reaching across the table to take her hand. "And I love you."

"I love you too," she said, squeezing my fingers.

We ordered food and wine for me, sparkling water for her, and spent the first part of dinner just talking and laughing, enjoying each other's company without any stress or worry.

I couldn't remember the last time I'd felt this relaxed, this happy, this certain that everything was going to be okay.

Athena seemed almost nervous though, kept fidgeting with her napkin and glancing at her purse like she was working up the courage to do something.

"You okay baby?" I asked. "You seem anxious."

"I'm fine," she said quickly. "Just... excited."

Before I could ask what she meant, she reached into her purse and pulled out an envelope, holding it carefully like it contained something precious.

My heart started beating faster, anxiety creeping in even though I had no idea what was in that envelope.

"What's that?" I asked, my voice coming out rougher than I intended.

"Open it," she said, sliding it across the table to me.

My hands were shaking slightly as I picked it up, and I noticed that she was watching me with an intensity that made my nervousness spike higher.

I opened the envelope carefully and pulled out what looked like an official document, some kind of certificate with fancy lettering at the top.

My eyes scanned the words but my brain wasn't processing them, wasn't making sense of what I was seeing.

Marriage Certificate.

The words finally registered and my head snapped up to look at Athena, confusion and shock warring inside me.

"What... what is this?" I managed to ask.

She was smiling now, a brilliant smile that lit up her whole face.

"Read it," she said softly. "All of it."

I looked back down at the paper, my eyes finding the names printed on it.

Tristan Hayes and Athena Slade.

Her signature was already there, elegant and official on the bride's line.

Mine was blank.

"I don't understand," I said, looking back up at her.

"I pulled some strings," she said. "Called in a few favors, got us a special license. I've already signed it."

She reached across the table and took my hands in hers.

"I know we were already planning a big wedding," she continued. "And we're still going to have that, still going to have the ceremony with all our family and friends. But I wanted this too. I wanted us to be legally married now. I wanted you to know that I'm all in, that I'm committed to you completely."

I was still trying to process what she was saying, my brain struggling to catch up with reality.

"After our fight," she went on, "after I threatened to end things between us, I realized how much that must have scared you. And I wanted to show you that I meant what I said, that I was never going to leave you, that you're stuck with me forever."

Her eyes were shining with tears now.

"All it needs is your signature, Tristan. Sign it, and I'm your wife."

The words hit me like a physical blow and suddenly I couldn't breathe, couldn't think, couldn't do anything except stare at her in absolute shock and awe.

She'd done this.

She'd prepared everything.

She was offering herself to me, completely, legally, forever.

And all I had to do was sign.

She pulled a pen from her purse and set it on the table next to the certificate.

My hand was shaking as I picked it up, and I looked at her one more time, needing to see her face, needing to know this was real.

She was crying now, smiling and crying at the same time, and she nodded at me.

"Make me your wife," she whispered.

I pressed the pen to paper and signed my name, the letters coming out a little shaky but legible.

Tristan Hayes.

The moment I finished, I dropped the pen and pulled her into my arms, kissing her with everything I had, not caring that we were in the middle of a restaurant, not caring about anything except showing her how much this meant to me.

She kissed me back just as fiercely and I could feel her smiling against my lips.

When we finally broke apart we were both breathless and I realized I was crying, tears streaming down my face without my permission.

"I can't believe you did this," I said, my voice breaking. "I can't believe you're actually my wife."

"Believe it," she said, wiping at my tears with her thumbs. "You're stuck with me now."

I laughed and cried at the same time, overwhelmed by emotions I didn't even have names for.

"I love you," I said, pulling her close again. "God Athena, I love you so much."

"I love you too," she whispered against my chest. "My husband."

The word sent a thrill through me and I held her tighter, feeling like the luckiest man alive.

We stood there holding each other for a long time, neither of us wanting to let go, both of us overwhelmed by the magnitude of what had just happened.

Finally we sat back down, though I kept my chair pulled close to hers so I could keep touching her, keep reassuring myself this was real.

"Tell me everything," I said. "Tell me exactly how you did this."

She laughed and launched into the story of how she'd spent yesterday pulling strings, calling in favors to get the special license processed so quickly.

"I asked Orion and Derek for help" she said with a grin. "Told them that I needed to surprise you, and they came through." They always come through. I'm grateful for the people I'm surrounded by.

"I signed my part yesterday, and I've been carrying it around all day waiting for the perfect moment to give it to you."

"This was perfect," I said, looking down at the certificate again, at our two signatures side by side, making it official. "You're perfect."

I picked up the marriage certificate, studying it carefully now, drinking in every detail. Our names, our signatures, the official seal that made it real.

"I can't believe I'm holding our marriage certificate," I said, my voice full of wonder.

"Better put it somewhere safe," she said. "That's the only copy until we file it with the courthouse tomorrow."

I carefully slid it back into the envelope, my hands still trembling slightly.

"Tomorrow?" I asked.

"I wanted you to have tonight to process it all before we make it official-official," she explained. "But yes, tomorrow morning we'll go file it, and then it's done. Legally married."

"My wife," I said, testing the words out loud.

"Your wife," she confirmed, and the smile on her face could have lit up the entire restaurant.

Author's note: I wanted to surprise my readers, hope I did a good job.

I love you all for still being here and loving my book. I'm grateful.
