Emma's recent letters mentioned that Sebastian's behavior had been strange.

He stayed shut in all day.

At night he'd wake from nightmares, clutching his chest in pain, and had called my name several times.

I had a bad feeling about this.

Sebastian didn't care about me that deeply.

Unless...

A few days later, a strange illness spread throughout the realm.

Those afflicted lost all their spiritual power, suffered body aches, couldn't stop coughing, ran extremely high fevers, and in severe cases, died from breathing difficulties.

As for me—after receiving Sebastian's letter, I went to his estate.

A servant led me into a room, then closed the door behind me.

The pungent smell of blood made me frown.

Sebastian slowly turned around and snapped his fingers.

The room blazed with light. Only then did I see enormous water tanks lining the walls, each containing a mermaid's corpse.

Their mouths gaped open, their eyes stared wide—they hadn't died peacefully.

"Adrian, do you know how much I've sacrificed to obtain supreme spiritual power?" Sebastian's voice was ethereal.

"Like what?"

"Like having Elena carve out your heart." His gaze was heavy.

"Let me guess—you also were reborn. After using my heart, you discovered you weren't compatible with it. In fact, it even rejected you, didn't it?"

"You're very clever. Living again, you figured it out right away." His tone was full of interest. "But what can you fight me with? That mermaid Rain?"

I sighed. "I never wanted to fight you. It's you who wants too much."

"What do you know? What's wrong with wanting to reach the highest position? Among the dragon clan, your constitution is the most special, especially that heart. Possessing it means possessing the perfect constitution for cultivating supreme spiritual power." Sebastian's eyes were full of fervor.

"Unfortunately, just taking my heart is useless," I added.

Sebastian nodded. "Fortunately, I've found a solution. As long as you willingly offer it, the heart will completely belong to me."

I laughed softly. "To make me willing—what's your bargaining chip, brother?"
