The Wedding That Never Was Chapter 26
[Ilara’s POV]
It was a nightmare about falling from a high building.
But in this dream, I saw another person falling with me—Adrian.
I woke up with a start.
The moonlight outside the window hung like a pale shroud, damp and cold on my skin.
My body was soaked in sweat. The inexplicable nightmare kept my heart tethered to that broken place.
Seeing Adrian jump with me in the dream sent chills down my spine. He shouldn't have been there.
I shook my head, trying to chase away the sorrowful trance.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
I walked over and opened it. Leo stood there holding a tray of breakfast food.
"Can I have the honor of having breakfast with Miss Vaughn?" he asked with a smile.
I glanced blankly out the window. It was clearly still midnight.
Realizing the noise I must have made, I apologized quickly. "Did I wake you up? I'm sorry, Leo. I didn't realize I was being so loud..."
Leo sighed and helped me to the dining table. "I was already awake. It wasn't you."
He explained that he had heard a massive crash earlier, like an explosion.
When he brought me home earlier, he had taken a detour because of the emergency vehicles.
After settling me in, he had received a phone call.
When he came back, his handsome brow was furrowed with gloom.
He looked scary to others when he frowned, but I had long grown immune to it over the past two years.
I held a bowl of seafood porridge he made and asked, "What's wrong?"
Leo told me to rest well, then went out without a word.
I was worried and wanted to wait for him, but I was too exhausted and fell asleep.
And then, there was this moment.
I stuffed a piece of egg into my mouth, chewing while looking at him, confused by his hesitation.
It took a long time before his deep voice spoke tentatively.
"Ilara... Adrian got into a car accident."
"Last night on Third Avenue, near the concert venue... He drove his car straight into the river."
