The Wedding That Never Was Chapter 6
A ring on the right ring finger. In many cultures, that signifies engagement.
Adrian had proposed to Sarah? And she said yes?
In an instant, I felt as if my internal organs had been hollowed out.
The next second, my stomach actually started to spasm.
It hurt so much that I couldn't hold it back. I grabbed the trunk of a nearby palm tree and started retching dryly.
Leo’s expression changed when he saw this. He reached out to support me.
I waved him off, refusing his help. “I’m fine. It’s just my old stomach problem acting up. I’ll take some medicine and be fine.”
After saying that, I turned and left, going back to Jessica to take my meds.
The charity performance afterward went smoothly and successfully.
But after the show ended, I didn't see Adrian anywhere.
I sat in the backstage lounge, a hole in my heart, tears falling uncontrollably.
I really wanted to ask Adrian, if he was already engaged to Sarah, then what was I?
Did we break up?
Did Adrian already break up with me, and I just didn't remember?
The more I thought, the more my head started to hurt again.
I covered my temples, knowing I was having an episode again.
Every time I had an episode, I would forget many things...
Jessica pushed the door open at that moment.
Seeing me pale and trembling, she immediately closed the door and rushed over.
“Ilara, are you okay?”
I took a moment to recover, then shook my head. “I’m fine.”
Jessica was still worried. “General Peterson just invited you to dinner the day after tomorrow. Adrian will definitely be there, since the General is his mentor.”
“But the way you are now... maybe you shouldn't go. If you get triggered again, you’ll really be driven mad.”
I took a deep breath. “General Peterson was my father’s friend. After my father died in the line of duty, he has always looked after me.”
An elder’s invitation... If I didn't go, I wouldn't be able to forgive myself.
On Tuesday night, I arrived at the restaurant early.
Actually, I met Adrian because of General Peterson.
After chatting with the General for a while, Adrian finally arrived late.
I found this strange and frowned. For over ten years, Adrian had never been late. Military punctuality was carved into his soul.
Especially for an invitation from an elder.
I stood up, about to ask if something happened to him.
The next second, I saw Sarah Jenkins following behind Adrian.
I froze immediately.
General Peterson had invited me and Adrian because he sensed something was wrong between us, so he specially organized this dinner to catch up.
What did Adrian mean by bringing Sarah?
Sarah seemed a bit timid. Only after Adrian introduced her did she dare to greet General Peterson.
General Peterson narrowed his eyes and didn't respond.
Adrian didn't even look at me, as if we were strangers.
He just led Sarah to sit down.
My heart stung. I sat down feeling utterly desolate.
We were supposed to be the closest lovers. When did we become such strangers?
The meal that followed was incredibly awkward.
General Peterson chatted with me and with Adrian, but completely ignored Sarah.
Halfway through, the General suddenly spoke calmly. “Adrian, go buy me a box of cheesecake from that old shop in the city.”
“Ilara knows where the shop is. You two go together.”
He didn't invite Sarah, so she could only sit there awkwardly.
The street below the restaurant was the one Adrian and I used to walk most often.
Back then, I wasn't a big star, and he wasn't a commander.
Neither of us had much savings. Every time Adrian gave me flowers, he picked wild California poppies from the roadside, washed them, tied them up, and gave them to me.
Passing by that patch of flowers, I couldn't help but stop.
“Adrian, do you remember the flowers here?”
I was lost in memories, unable to pull myself out.
I turned my head, only to see Adrian frowning. “These? They’re just weeds.”
I looked up blankly.
Is that so? They were just insignificant weeds.
Then did our memories also become insignificant?
I wasn't resigned. I wanted to trigger his memory. “Even if they’re weeds, they’re beautiful.”
“Can you pick a bunch for me?”
Adrian’s frown deepened. “With your fame, don’t you have piles of people sending you flowers every day?”
“Let’s go. The General is waiting.”
With that, he strode forward.
I looked at his back, my heart torn and bleeding.
Was the General waiting, or was Sarah waiting?
Did he remember?
The very first bouquet was from him...
The words reached my lips, but I couldn't say them anymore.
Back at the restaurant.
Pushing the door open, I saw Sarah holding a glass of whiskey. “General, I toast to you...”
She raised her hand to drink.
Adrian stepped forward and snatched the glass away. “General, Sarah can’t drink. If you want to drink...”
He turned to look at me. “Miss Ilara holds her liquor well. She’s like a half-daughter to you.”
“Sarah is delicate. I’ll trouble you to entertain the General.”
My heart tightened, and I stood frozen.
Adrian knew clearly that I had ruined my stomach over the past two years. I couldn't drink hard liquor at all...
