The Wedding That Never Was Chapter 38
The tears I thought I had wiped clean began to fall uncontrollably the moment I saw Leo.
Seeing me cry, Leo rushed in immediately, dropping his relaxed facade.
I noticed a cut running from his thigh to the back of his knee. Although not too deep, the blood was frightening.
Following my gaze, Leo realized he forgot to cover it. Seeing my tears fall harder, he quickly forced a smile.
"Don't be scared. It doesn't hurt."
Then he turned and saw the vicious glare Adrian was shooting at him from the floor.
Leo had been suppressing his anger all day. After unlocking my handcuffs, he rushed forward and kicked Adrian hard in the stomach.
Adrian was no longer the man who could fight him to a draw outside the coffee shop.
He took the kick. His internal organs felt like they were shattering, but he couldn't even stand up.
Let alone fight back.
I hurriedly ran over to pull Leo back. My legs were still weak, but I held onto Leo's hand tightly.
"Let's go back."
Leo looked back at me and gave a low hum. Then he looked at Adrian again.
"I don't fight cripples. That's bullying."
"But I'll remember the score from today. We'll settle it slowly later."
I tugged him again. I just wanted to go home.
Leo took my hand and walked out.
Adrian clutched his stomach tightly, cold sweat pooling on his forehead and dripping down.
He stared silently at the door where I had left, just like in the hospital room that day.
Leo led me away from his vision once again.
His chest still rose and fell with breath, but his face looked no different from a corpse.
He and his rotting heart had been completely thrown into the trash. She didn't want him, so none of this had meaning anymore.
After a while, only the sharp sirens of police cars remained around the house.
The sky was pressed into a dark shade.
Rolling clouds swallowed the sunlight, their bellies bloated, waiting for the next hearty rainstorm.
A storm was coming.
The city had been restless lately.
The new money, Adrian Hayes, and the heir of the old prestigious family, Leo Vance, were fighting fiercely. Rumor had it, it was over a woman.
Newspapers covered it everywhere. The narrative was highly unified.
They said Adrian kidnapped Leo's verified fiancée. After Leo found her, they fought, and Leo called the police.
As for the heroine of the event, opinions on her identity remained divided.
Sarah Jenkins, the neighbor of the Hayes family, was nominated.
But someone quickly refuted, "Miss Sarah married the son of the Chen family last year."
Then someone said it was the singer Ilara Vaughn, but that voice was quickly suppressed.
In the end, due to insufficient evidence or some other reason—
Adrian was released on bail two days later.
It was said that the capable upstart wore a black suit that day, looking like he was attending a funeral.
He was thin and was pushed out in a wheelchair. The moment the photo hit the papers, it extinguished the hopes of many wealthy merchants looking for a son-in-law.
Meanwhile, Leo, who was at the center of the storm, was accompanying me to choose a wedding dress.
Set after set of huge tulle gowns embedded with diamonds or sprinkled with gold leaf were brought out.
Finally, only one man slowly entered the shop. Their eyes met, and Adrian revealed a cold smile.
"Congratulations."
A peal of thunder outside illuminated the night. Immediately, heavy rain poured down.
I returned to the lobby wearing the dress I was most satisfied with.
The white veil covering my eyes obstructed my vision, so I couldn't see the winding trail of blood clearly.
I was confused. Why did the lights in the lobby go out?
Another clap of thunder fell.
This time, I finally saw the boundary between white and black.
And the two men covered in blood.
