The Wedding That Never Was Chapter 30

3 min 1 views

Adrian sat quietly on the hospital bed, as if the shattering sound I heard outside was just a hallucination.

I met his pitch-black eyes and saw a smile that was almost nonexistent.

That smile made me walk closer in a daze. My fingertips lightly touched his pale cheek, my gaze full of sorrow and pity.

Adrian was obviously very happy about this.

He tilted his head slightly, placing half of his cheek in my palm. His cool breath sprayed onto my wrist. "You came to see me, Ilara..."

This Adrian made me feel like he was just a ghost unable to stay in the human world.

"You're still willing to come see me. Does that prove I did the right thing?" His smile deepened.

But I woke up in that smile.

I sighed, avoiding Adrian's gaze that was sticky and sickly. I cast a look for help at Leo, who was frowning at the door.

Adrian's gaze vanished instantly.

He turned his face away from us, but his fingertips quietly rested on my hand propped by the bed.

That warm skin almost melted his cold body.

Leo walked over and glanced at him, the corner of his mouth hooking up in sarcasm.

He handed a thick stack of medical records to me.

I took them and looked through them one by one. Every sheet bore Adrian's name.

These complex entries proved only one thing: The nerve damage in Adrian's legs was irreversible. There was no possibility of treatment at home or abroad.

His sensory nerves only reached his thighs. From his calves to his toes, he had no feeling. He could never walk again, nor feel pain there.

There were also a few psychiatric diagnosis sheets mixed in.

Severe depression.

That was the doctor's entire judgment on his psychological condition and suicidal behavior.

The illness I was cured of a year ago had now been completely transferred to the person who once caused me to fall ill.

After reading every page, I placed my palm on the back of Adrian's hand. "You're just sick, Adrian. You'll be cured soon."

You're just sick, Ilara. You'll be cured soon.

Adrian looked at me, wondering how it felt when Ilara heard his half-hearted comfort back then.

He looked into my eyes. They held his entire reflection.

But there was only concern and pity inside. Not a trace of love left for him.

He had completely lost Ilara long ago.

I looked at his empty eyes and tucked the quilt for him.

Leo was getting impatient waiting. He wasn't here to guard the door for a love rival.

Adrian was betrayed by everyone. His father took the opportunity of his fall to run out of the old mansion and demand his assets back, greed written all over his face.

After all, his small assets had more than doubled in Adrian's hands.

Adrian was ruthless too. After waking up, he directly ordered a nursing home to be built to lock his father in, making Mr. Hayes scream about cutting off ties.

Leo stayed in the hospital waiting for me, so he didn't miss the good show put on by the Hayes father and son.

But he wasn't going to let Adrian play pitiful to me over this.

Leo sneered and stepped forward. "I see it's just broken legs, not amputation."

"Colonel Hayes dared to charge through a hail of bullets on the battlefield. How come he's so fragile now?"

After mocking him, he pulled my hand and prepared to leave.

But at the door, someone bumped into us.

"Ah, I'm sorry...!"

A crisp voice sounded. I felt the voice sounded familiar.

I raised my head, still dizzy from the bump, and my eyes met with the female soldier who was about to help me. Both of us froze.

"Sarah?"
