The Wedding That Never Was Chapter 4
My face turned white, and my body began to tremble uncontrollably.
“No, Adrian, listen to me. I just didn't want to take that medicine anymore...”
But Adrian ignored my state completely, interrupting me with sarcasm. “I think you shouldn't be a singer. You should be an actress instead!”
“If you’re going to lie, at least make it believable. Taking vitamins is just too fake!”
He threw the bottle away.
Bang. It sounded like a boulder hitting my heart.
I started to have trouble breathing, unable to form complete sentences. “No... it’s not like that.”
“I have a concert coming up. After taking the meds, I suffer from insomnia all night, and my head hurts so bad...”
I felt terrible all over and started unconsciously scratching at my hair.
Whenever I took that medicine, the sound of my heartbeat would amplify infinitely in my ears.
I always had headaches and nosebleeds for no reason...
So I stopped the meds and switched them with vitamins to fool myself.
But Adrian looked at me with a cold face, not believing a single word.
Then, silently, he turned to leave.
I was terrified that if he left, he would never come back. I rushed forward and grabbed him, begging bitterly. “Adrian, please don’t go...”
Adrian looked at me and hesitated for two seconds.
In the end, he shook off my hand and strode away!
The door was slammed shut violently.
I curled up on the sofa in agony, tears flowing uncontrollably.
After a long time, I grabbed those Vitamin C tablets and stuffed them into my mouth, one by one.
Mixed with tears, scraping my throat, I swallowed them whole.
The tour continued, one show after another.
San Diego was the first stop, and I returned there for the finale concert.
It was supposed to be a perfect ending.
Before the concert started, however, my mother suddenly appeared and blocked me backstage.
She looked disheveled. She fell to her knees in front of me with a thud, crying and screaming.
“Ilara, have pity on your mother! The loan sharks said if I don’t pay up, they’ll chop off one of my hands!”
My heart trembled, but I took a step back.
“Back then, for gambling money, you tried to sell me to that old neighbor when I was underage for ten thousand dollars.”
“You opened the door for him in the middle of the night. You almost got Chloe killed too.”
“I ran away with Chloe, but you went around telling everyone I was selling my sister to chase my dreams in the big city... Even so, after I got famous, I still fed and supported you.”
“But you still want to sell Chloe to a rich man to be your next ATM...”
“I won’t give you another cent!”
Before I finished speaking, Slap!
My mother, her face twisted, slapped me hard across the face.
“I’m your mother! Are you going to watch me die? I raised you with so much hardship. You make so much money, why can’t you give me a little?”
“Ilara Vaughn! If you dare treat me like this, you will die a miserable death!”
I clenched my hands, nails digging deep into my palms.
But the physical pain was nothing compared to the bitterness in my heart.
Jessica finally arrived with security and dragged her away.
The vicious curse of a biological mother against her daughter sent chills down everyone’s spine.
After it quieted down, Jessica looked at me worriedly. “Ilara, the concert...”
I took a deep breath and sat at the vanity. “Cover the handprint with concealer. I’ll sing.”
When the music started, I lifted my gorgeous skirt and walked onto the stage step by step.
With every step, heavier lights covered my body.
The concert went on as scheduled, and the enthusiasm of fans from all over the world was boiling over.
When it came to the last song, I looked at the fans below, and suddenly my heart stirred.
I picked up the microphone. “Today is the last show of the world tour. This moment is very important to me.”
“Right now, I want to share it with the most important person in my life.”
After speaking, I took out my phone and called Adrian.
The cheers below suddenly quieted down. They waited with bated breath, just like me.
But one second, two seconds...
The ringing tone continued until it automatically hung up. No one answered.
My heart sank to the bottom. Standing on the stage, I felt lost and helpless.
Suddenly, a fan shouted loudly, “Ilara, you still have us!”
I was stunned, my eyes warming with tears.
A few seconds later, I forced a smile. “Thank you, everyone... Actually, I really wanted to walk with one person, forever and ever.”
“But it seems... that wish won’t come true.”
“This last song is for everyone. I hope we... can all love ourselves properly.”
The fans heard that soft, beautiful voice again.
“Who unintentionally brings it up, only to be remembered by whom, aging in the corner of memories...”
“Walking through thorns just to walk towards you.”
In the lingering sound of the last note, I stood at the edge of the stage.
I closed my eyes, took a step forward, and fell from the heights!
Screams erupted throughout the venue.
