The year I asked to terminate our mating contract, my Alpha had only one demand.

"Give the Blackwood family an heir."

It took five years of torment before I finally conceived.

But instead of joy, he pinned me against the wall like a madman. His eyes were crimson, and a beast-like growl rumbled in his chest as he demanded to know whose bastard I was carrying.

I stared at the vasectomy report he threw in my face.

My eyes burned, and my throat felt like it was stuffed with cotton. I couldn't make a sound.

No wonder it took so long to get pregnant.

The man I hadn't seen in two months pushed open the bedroom door, bringing a gust of freezing wind and snow with him.

I had just injected a suppressant into my arm.

Suddenly, a tall shadow loomed over me.

An icy hand gripped my wrist, and the massive, powerful Alpha slammed me against the cold tiles of the bathroom wall.

"Explain."

The damp, freezing tiles made my back spasm.

I tried to struggle up, but he pinned my wrists and shoved me back down hard.

"Explain what?" I managed to ask.

The scent of cedar, cold as a blizzard, rampaged through the small space. My fragile gland at the back of my neck began to tighten and burn, my instincts screaming at me to submit.

His pitch-black pupils were full of mockery. His gaze dropped, landing on my still-flat stomach.

"What do you think?"

"I'm overseas dealing with territory disputes, and you couldn't wait to get knocked up by some stray wolf just to finish your task?"

The bathroom light was dim and yellow.

In the five years of our cold, distant marriage, this was the first time we were at each other's throats like this.

And it was for the unformed pup in my belly.

I looked at the unmelted snow on his shoulders and felt a bitter sting in my eyes.

He didn't brave a blizzard to fly back from New York because he was moved by the new life inside me.

He came back to condemn me.

"You think I broke the mating contract?" I asked, my voice straining.

"Didn't you?" He sneered, his tone turning darker. "You couldn't conceive for five years, but the moment I leave, you get pregnant?"

"Luca, I almost admire you. You really committed to the act of being desperate for a child for five years."

"All those trips to the clinic... were you actually trying to fix that broken body of yours? Or were you just setting the stage so this pregnancy would look legitimate?"

Every word was dripping with malicious speculation.

The concentration of Alpha pheromones in the air was getting higher, almost suffocating me.

A numbing pain shot down my spine—the instinctive fear an Omega feels toward an angry Alpha.

Before my throat closed up completely, I used my last shred of clarity to defend myself. "The baby is eight weeks old. Before you left, we spent my heat together. If it's not yours, whose is it?"

"When it gets bigger, I can get an amniocentesis for DNA. Why are you pinning this betrayal on me now?"

Hearing my defense, he let out a harsh laugh. His rough thumb ground maliciously against my stomach. "My child?"

"Then please explain to me: since I had a vasectomy five years ago, how exactly did you get pregnant with this... thing?"
