At the private hospital.

Dr. Sarah wrote me a prescription. "I don't recommend amniocentesis for an eight-week fetus. It's easy to cause a miscarriage. If you're in a hurry, you can do a non-invasive blood test."

I stared at the family photo on her desk for a while.

The little wolf pup in the middle was being held by its parents, revealing two sharp milk teeth, smiling at the camera.

Dr. Sarah looked at me and suddenly smiled. "The one you give birth to will be just as cute."

She had been helping me regulate my body for years.

We had known each other for a long time.

She knew a lot about my situation.

I forced the corners of my lips up, not saying a word.

"By the way, why are you in such a hurry to do a paternity test?" Dr. Sarah guessed. "Does your husband suspect the child isn't his?"

I said, "You can remove the word 'suspect'."

"Then what will you do? You worked so hard to conceive for five years..."

"It doesn't matter," I said lazily. "I got pregnant once. It's his business if he doesn't want it. I don't owe him anything anymore."

She hesitated, then finally said, "You never owed him anything."

That simple sentence made the mask of ease on my face crumble.

Tears welled up in my eyes, heavy and ready to fall.

I held back the stinging sensation and looked at her seriously. "Thank you, Sarah."

When I was very young, my family said I was a burden, that I owed them.

When I was twenty-three and got rid of the baby, Dominic said I betrayed him.

Later, into our marriage, when I couldn't conceive as an Omega, the whole family thought it was my problem.

It seemed no one had ever said that to me.

You never owed anyone anything.

"The child is your blood, after all. You need to think clearly. If you abort this one, your gland function will be completely damaged. It might be difficult to even go into heat naturally in the future."

That was the last thing she said to me before I left.

I smiled. "That's perfect. It saves me the trouble of removing the mark."

After drawing blood, I left the hospital.

The sun had just risen outside.

Warm light shone on my body.

The string that had been tight in my heart for years finally loosened.

I drove toward the private clinic Dominic had sent me.

After finishing this one last thing, I thought, I would never stay in this city again.
