The hum of the SUV filled the silence that followed my question. I could feel the tension ripple through the car again, heavier this time, like my words had struck something raw in all three of them.

Toren’s gaze flicked up to the rearview mirror. His golden eyes met mine, steady and unreadable. For a moment, I thought he might stay silent like the others — that quiet, controlled kind of silence that was somehow worse than yelling.

Then, finally, he exhaled. “Alright,” he said. “You deserve to know.”

The twins glanced up from their phones, the hum of the tires against asphalt the only sound. Even Tyson set down the file he’d been reading, his jaw tight.

Toren’s voice took on that steady, commanding tone that always demanded attention — not harsh, just Alpha.

“Every Luna in history — at least, every one worth remembering — carries three duties first and foremost: governance, balance, and counsel.”

I tilted my head, trying to process that. “Governance as in… like laws?”

He nodded once. “Exactly. You’ll be part of every decision that affects the pack — resources, patrols, alliances, punishments. Your word carries the same weight as ours when it comes to the pack’s welfare.”

That surprised me. “You mean, I get a vote?”

Talon turned halfway in his seat, giving me a small grin. “Not a vote — a voice. Bigger difference than you think. When Alphas can’t agree, the Luna doesn’t vote… she decides. You’re the tie-breaker.”

I blinked. “That sounds… like a lot of pressure.”

“It is,” Toren said simply. “But it’s also what keeps power from consuming the pack. Without a Luna, decisions turn to dominance battles. It’s chaos.”

Tyson made a low sound, something between a grunt and a chuckle. “And believe me, we’ve had our share of those.”

“Only because you can’t control your temper,” Talon muttered.

Tyson shot him a glare over the seat. “I can control it fine. I just don’t like being told what to do by anyone under six feet tall.”

Talon smirked. “That’s everyone who isn’t you.”

“Exactly.”

I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. “You two are really convincing me that you need supervision.”

Toren chuckled under his breath, the faintest curve to his lips. “Which brings us to the second part — balance.”

He paused, eyes flicking to me again. “A Luna’s presence stabilizes the Alphas. You’re the center point in a storm of dominance. When one of us loses control, your bond pulls us back. You carry the emotional tether that keeps us from turning on each other.”

“That sounds… dangerous,” I said quietly. “What if I can’t control it?”

“You won’t need to,” Toren replied. “You’ll feel it. The bond works through instinct. When one of us is too angry, or too lost in power, your presence will ground us. It’s… difficult to explain.”

Tyson leaned forward between the seats, his expression unreadable now. “It’s like this, Kira — imagine three wolves circling each other, all fangs and fury. Then there’s you. You’re the one they’d rather die than bite.”

The way he said it made heat rise to my cheeks. “That’s… poetic,” I said after a second.

He smirked. “I’m not poetic, sweetheart. Just honest.”

Talon’s tone softened, that calm middle ground he always seemed to find between Tyson’s fire and Toren’s steel. “Balance doesn’t mean obedience, though. You won’t just calm us — you’ll challenge us. When we make mistakes, it’s your duty to make sure we see them.”

“Challenge you?” I echoed, a brow lifting.

He nodded. “Exactly. You’ll be the only one who can, without risking the pack’s structure. You can question us. Disagree. Even refuse to carry out something if it goes against your moral compass. The Luna isn’t beneath the Alphas. She’s beside them.”

That caught me off guard. “So… I’m basically the fourth Alpha.”

Toren’s lips twitched. “In a sense. The difference is, you’re the one who keeps the other three from killing each other.”

Shyanne snorted softly beside me. “You’re basically their babysitter, Luna.”

Marianne giggled. “A really hot, terrifying babysitter.”

I elbowed both of them lightly. “Not helping.”

Tyson chuckled, leaning back in his seat again. “They’re not wrong, though. You’ll do more than keep us balanced — you’ll keep the pack’s heart steady. When Toren or I are dealing with Council affairs, you’ll act as the public voice. That means ceremonies, speeches, conflict mediations, and half a dozen political dinners I’d rather skip.”

“Oh,” I said slowly, processing that. “So I get the fun jobs.”

Toren glanced over his shoulder with a faint smile. “Exactly. You speak for the pack when the rest of us are too busy keeping it alive.”

I hesitated, frowning slightly. “And what happens when I don’t know what to say?”

“You’ll learn,” Talon said softly. “You don’t have to be perfect. The pack doesn’t need perfect. They need someone they trust to care — someone they can see and believe in.”

Tyson nodded in agreement, though he hid it behind his usual smirk. “Yeah. You’ll mess up. We all do. But when you stand in front of them, when they feel that you’re theirs — it’ll be enough.”

I leaned back against the seat, the hum of the engine steady beneath us. “So… I make decisions, keep you three from killing each other, talk to the pack, fix problems, and handle the emotional fallout when everything falls apart?”

Toren’s chuckle was low and warm. “That’s one way to put it.”

Shyanne grinned. “Luna Kira — Chief Chaos Coordinator.”

Marianne nodded solemnly. “And Professional Alpha Wrangler.”

I laughed despite myself, shaking my head. “You two are impossible.”

The laughter eased the weight in my chest — but only slightly. My thoughts were spinning, already trying to process everything they’d said.

Governance. Balance. Counsel.

All things that sounded like power… and responsibility.

I glanced back up at Toren, voice softer this time. “And if I fail?”

He didn’t hesitate. “Then we all do.”
