When Love Becomes Past Tense Chapter 7
I was woken up in the morning by a ringtone again.
It was Roman’s phone.
I fumbled for it, accidentally hitting the answer button without looking. The call connected.
I handed the phone to Roman, my voice thick with sleep.
"Roman, your phone... answer it..."
A furious roar exploded from the other end.
"Fuck, it really is you. Hazel, open the door!"
"You actually slept with my best friend..."
"Damn it!"
Then, I heard banging on the front door, one thud after another.
Caleb’s voice was loud enough to be heard through the door.
"Hazel, open up!"
"Roman, I treated you like a brother, and you slept with my woman!"
"Open the door!"
The banging got louder. I was wide awake now.
The moment Roman opened the door, Caleb charged in.
He was unshaven, eyes bloodshot, looking haggard.
He grabbed my wrist first, his face full of rage.
"Hazel Vance, so this is why you haven't contacted me! You've been lying in another man's bed all along!"
"Have you no shame?"
Caleb couldn't get the rest of his words out.
Because my palm had already connected with his face.
Smack. Crisp and loud.
Roman handed me our marriage certificate.
I flipped it open and slapped it against Caleb’s face.
"Read it clearly. Marriage Certificate."
"I told you a long time ago. The moment you left that day, that wedding had nothing to do with you."
"A legal husband and wife sleeping together—what is the problem?"
"As for asking if I have no shame, my answer is: I certainly have more shame than you did sleeping with Sienna Blake while we were dating, or calling me 'leftovers' in front of your bro."
Caleb froze.
But he reacted quickly, craning his neck to argue.
