Someone else could have been fooled by Kayla acting as if she knew nothing about the text I received on my day off, but even if I hadn't suspected her, it was still her number that sent me the message.

"What text?" I repeated her last question out loud, chuckling lightly, already irritated at the fact that she was ruining my brunch with Jenna who was still fuming across the table, but trying her hardest to remain quiet, letting me handle my business. Beneath all that calm, I could see that Jenna was charged, ready to act if push came to shove with Kayla.

Kayla shrugged at the question, and I shook my head.

"Why are you in Vermont Pack right now, Kayla?" I asked, trying to look for any logical reasons why she would abandon the comfort of her pack to be where no one wanted her.

  I genuinely wondered.

Was it because of Aidan? Or was it for the fact that she saw me after all these years, and found out that she failed in her plan to keep me and Aidan away or ruin our family.

"I heard that the people here are very accommodating, and I wanted to see for myself, so I made a little trip," Kayla said, and I rolled my eyes with a groan, thinking that she must be really stupid if she thought anyone would believe that.

At this point, I was done with Kayla and ready to return to my day with Jenna, and my friend must have seen it, seeing as she spoke for the first time since Kayla approached us, the spite not even remotely masked in her tone.

"You have one minute to leave us the fuck alone, sis," Jenna sneered, eyes dark. "Before I start to call pack security, reporting a threat, not that you look like much of one to me."

Kayla must have understood at that moment that she didn't stand a chance at fooling anyone here, so she switched faces faster than I could say jackpot.

  "Fine, bitch…"

"I will advise you to be careful with the words that come out of your mouth," Jenna cut Kayla off, but she didn't seem fazed.

"It's not like you're going to pounce on me in the middle of a restaurant on their busy day because that would say a lot about Vermont Pack and its practices, no? That would be bad for the looks," she said, facing Jenna who was shooting daggers straight at Kayla's face now, uncaring.

Kayla turned back to me. "Like the friends that we once were, I'm just going to tell it to you as it is. If you do not stay away from Aidan, you're going to regret the things that will follow."

  I almost laughed out loud.

This woman did not just threaten me over someone who was ordained by the goddess to be my mate.

"Aidan was never yours," she continued. "You've always just been a pawn in the game, so I'm wondering what could have given you the idea that you could switch places. Take your baby and leave before bad things actually start to happen," Kayla said at last, and I took a moment to take her in.

  I shook my head.

"I would like to see exactly what you can do now that you won't be springing up on me, disguising your snakeskin to be a friend, just so you can try to carry out your evil," I said. "And know this, Kayla." The words tumbled out of my lips, heavy with intent, and I smiled through it. "You have just as much to lose as I do, so think wisely."

From what Aidan said about Kayla's daughter, she didn't deserve to be threatened because of her vile mother's actions, but I had my kid to protect from someone who would derive pleasure in seeing differently.

Kayla took a step back, a shadow of a smile that indicated her shock, playing on her lips, and she scoffed.

My attention had been on Kayla since she came in here, warning and threatening me and my family that I hadn't noticed Jenna tense up across me, her eyes locked in on her phone.

When I noticed, my attention fell away from Kayla, reducing the significance of whatever threats or words she had to say to less than zero percent. She still stood there, but I didn't care. My hand shot out to reach my friend.

  "Jen, what's up?"

Jenna's eyes rose to meet mine, wide, glistening with tears, and her body shook as she tried to control her breathing. My alert multiplied, and I scrambled for a way to make whatever was shaking Jenna up this badly go away.

"What is it, Jenna?" I asked, jerking her by her arm back to reality, and her glossy, distant eyes snapped back.

"Stonewolves are in the pack," she said, and I froze.

  That wasn't possible.

  Not again.

From all Aidan and Jenna had said before now, the Stonewolves had only been able to get so close before they were either chased away or brought down. They never came close enough, but even the news of them being in the pack didn't bother me as much as the shaken look on Jenna's face.

Before I could speak again, Jenna's calculating red-rimmed eyes found Kayla, someone who was still standing in front of us, not wanting to be the woman without a dramatic entrance or exit, and she successfully got herself into the spotlight.

"You led them here," Jenna said, not asked. "You led the Stonewolves here and you came to distract us," Jenna cut out,  shooting up to her feet, and I saw myself doing the same thing.

We just dropped Nadia off just now, and Stonewolves were in the pack. Again.

"What nonsense," Kayla boomed, looking offended. "Accuse me with something that actually makes sense. How exactly could I have done that?"

I almost believed Kayla. I almost did…because it would be better to do that than think that my daughter was in the same danger again.

Jenna was scrambling for her things now, and I shuffled out of the booth, leaving a startled-looking Kayla behind.

"We have to go," Jenna rushed out, forgetting about Kayla, and I thought of the many things that could go wrong. The Stonewolves were cruel. Heartless. Evil.

And if they got their hands on our daughter or anyone for that matter…

Jenna cut through my thoughts with her words, her voice shaky, frantic.

  "They already hurt Jace."
