CAPTURED BY THE ALIEN Chapter 15: 15
As we continued through the forest, the feeling of being watched only grew. Varek was even more tense, his eyes now focused not only on the path ahead but on every shadow in the trees, on every distant sound that broke the silence. With each step, we felt that something was about to happen, and it wasn’t something good.
The wind shifted direction, bringing with it a strange smell. It wasn’t like the fresh air of the forest; it had a metallic edge, a sense of impending danger. Varek suddenly stopped and looked to the sides, his eyes fixed on the trees to our right. I stopped just behind him, my heart racing faster. Whatever it was, it no longer felt like a simple creature of the forest. The pressure was mounting, and my body was on full alert. I could feel that any wrong move might put us in danger.
“Stay quiet,” Varek said in a low, almost imperceptible tone, but firm.
I did as he asked, nerves on edge. I tried to control my breathing, but fear was taking over me. Whatever it was, it was no longer a simple threat. The feeling of danger was palpable, and I couldn’t shake the sensation that we were being stalked.
It was then that we saw the shadow move.
A cloaked figure, dark and blending with the shadows of the forest, appeared in front of us. Its eyes, glowing with an intense red light, watched us with a calmness that only increased the sense of threat. It made no move toward us, but its presence was unmistakable—it was one of the forest sentinels, a being with magical powers who served the Keepers.
“We knew you would come,” the figure said, its voice low and dragged, as though the forest itself were speaking.
Varek stayed firm in front of me, his hand on the hilt of his sword, ready to react to any movement. He said nothing, just observed the sentinel carefully.
The figure raised one hand, as if to calm us, but the gesture only heightened the sense of danger in the air. “We are not your enemies, at least not yet. But you are trespassing on sacred ground, and there is no turning back. Veydra has chosen you.”
“Chosen for what?” Varek asked, his tone grave.
The figure smiled, although its eyes remained cold. “To fulfill your destiny. To be the key that will open the temple gates. To face what is to come.”
I frowned. “And what is to come?”
The sentinel looked at me, its red eyes glowing intensely. “What is to come is the end of what you know. The destruction of the weak and the rise of the strong. What you hold in your hands is greater than you can imagine.”
These words hung in the air like a spell, charged with palpable tension. I didn’t know if I was more frightened by what was being said or by the sentinel’s calm but threatening tone. It didn’t seem like it wanted to fight us, but at the same time, its words were full of immense power, something I couldn’t fully comprehend.
“Why don’t you leave us alone?” Varek asked, his voice hardening. “What do you want from us?”
The sentinel shook its head slowly. “It is not what we want, Khan. It is what you are destined to do. Veydra has chosen you to open the way. And this cannot be avoided.”
Varek stood in silence for a moment, assessing the situation. I could see the frustration on his face, but also a firm determination. He knew we couldn’t just turn back now. The path was set, and we had to move forward.
“So what do we do now?” Varek asked finally.
The sentinel took a step toward us, its eyes never leaving ours. “You continue forward. The temple awaits you. There, the answers you seek will be before you. But remember, what is revealed will not be easy to bear.”
With that, the figure turned and began to move away, its steps silent as the forest itself. The fear still lingered around us, but destiny was calling, and we knew we couldn’t hesitate any longer.
“Let’s go,” Varek said, his voice steady. “The temple is close. We can’t stop now.”
I followed him, still feeling the weight of those words echoing in my mind. Whatever we were about to face, I knew it wouldn’t be simple. But the connection between Varek and me, something that seemed to grow with every step, gave me a strange sense that, together, we could face anything.
The path ahead was dark, but Varek’s determination and my desire to understand our fate gave me strength to keep going. The temple was near. What we would find there, we didn’t know. But one thing was certain: our journey was far from over, and the real challenge was just beginning.
