CAPTURED BY THE ALIEN Chapter 24: 25

The walk through the darkness seemed endless. I felt a growing pressure in my mind, a sense that time was distorting around me. Varek walked ahead, determined, but I could see the worry in his eyes. Something had changed. What I felt, what had happened inside me, was still so fresh, so strong, that I couldn't stop thinking about it. The presence of that force, that power, still lingered in me like a shadow.

"Carmem, are you okay?" Varek asked, his voice softer than usual. He turned to me, his eyes assessing my expression, as if he wanted to make sure I wasn't about to break down.

I tried to force a smile, but I knew I wasn't convincing anyone. I didn't know what was happening to me, and that terrified me. Every step I took seemed to pull me further away from the normalcy I once knew, and I didn't know if I was prepared for this.

"I don't know what's happening, Varek," I admitted, my voice trembling. "I feel like there's something inside me, something I can't control."

He watched me in silence for a moment, and when he spoke, his voice was deep, almost as if he were pondering his words.

"You've always been stronger than you realize, Carmem," he said, with a confidence I didn’t share. "This power, whatever it is, is inside you for a reason. You can't run from it."

I felt a wave of anger rise within me. Anger at not understanding what was happening, anger at not being able to control my own life. But what scared me the most was the feeling that, somehow, all of this was out of my hands. That my destiny had already been written, that I had no choice.

"The reason, Varek?" I let out a dry, humorless laugh. "I have no idea what that means. I'm not chosen, I'm not any of that. I'm not strong. I'm... I'm just a normal person, and now this... this is too much for me."

Varek stopped and looked at me seriously. He seemed to understand my anguish, but also seemed to know something I didn't yet comprehend.

"Sometimes, strength isn't about what you know, but about what you're capable of learning," he said, his voice soft, but full of an authority I couldn't ignore. "And you're about to learn something very important, Carmem. Something that will change everything."

I looked at him skeptically, but said nothing. I wanted to believe him, wanted to trust his words, but there was a feeling, a feeling that wouldn't go away, that told me something was wrong. Something Varek wasn't telling me. But there was no time for questions. The path ahead was uncertain, and I had no choice but to follow.

As we walked, the landscape around us began to change. The shadows that were once dense and impenetrable started to dissipate, giving way to a thick mist that spread across the ground. The vegetation around us seemed to have a life of its own, as if the branches of the trees were moving, watching our every step. The wind, now stronger, seemed to whisper incomprehensible words, as if we were being watched, and that only heightened the sense of discomfort consuming me.

"We're almost there," Varek said, breaking the silence. His voice was tense, and I could tell he was also feeling the pressure of the environment around us. "But there's still something we need to understand."

I didn't know what he meant, but I knew that, as much as I wanted to, I couldn't question him. What lay ahead of us would decide our fates.

The mist grew even thicker as we approached a large portal. The stone archway was covered in moss and ancient markings that seemed to have been made centuries ago. It emanated an almost palpable energy, and I felt my body react to it, as if the portal were calling to me.

"This is the Portal of Truth," Varek murmured, almost as if it were a prayer. "Through it, we will see what we truly are, and what we need to do to restore balance."

I looked at him, confused. Restore balance? What was he talking about? I felt like there was much more to this mission than he was telling me. Something darker, something I wasn't prepared to face.

Before I could ask, Varek stepped forward, placing his hand on the portal. Immediately, a wave of energy surged through the air, and the portal began to glow with a bright light, as if it were a doorway to another world. I took a step back, fear overtaking me.

"Varek, wait!" I shouted, but he didn't hear me. He was already inside the light, disappearing into the opening of the portal.

I hesitated for a moment. Doubt and fear paralyzed me, but at the same time, there was something inside me pushing me forward, as if something within me was burning, waiting to be unleashed. I knew there was no turning back, knew that I could no longer deny my destiny.

With a deep breath, I took a step forward, entering the light.

The sensation was like being ripped out of my own body. The space around me transformed into a completely different dimension, where time made no sense and the laws of physics seemed to not exist. I felt as though I was floating, weightless, shapeless, lost in a sea of lights and shadows.

In the midst of this chaos, a figure appeared before me. It was Varek, but it wasn't the Varek I knew. His eyes were empty, devoid of the intensity he always displayed. He seemed more like a shadow of himself, a representation of what he had been.

"Varek?" I whispered, my voice trembling.

He didn't answer. Instead, he extended his hand to me, and as soon as I touched his skin, a wave of visions flooded me. I saw Varek's past, his fears, his choices, his mistakes. I saw what he sacrificed to get here, saw the decisions he made without ever revealing the truth to me. But what shocked me the most was the vision that came afterward.

I saw a scene. A city in ruins. Flames burned everything around it. And in the center of the destruction, there was a figure. It wasn't a man, but a creature, something indescribable. And that creature was looking at me, as if it knew what I represented.

The visions faded, and I was pulled back to reality, my heart racing and my breath uncontrolled.

"Did you see what happened, Carmem?" Varek asked, his voice broken, as if he were lost in his own memories. "You saw what we are, what we must do."

I stared at him, and a bitter truth formed in my mind. I knew what he was telling me, and I knew that the mission we were destined for was more than I had imagined.

It was a fight for survival. And I had been chosen to fight.
