CAPTURED BY THE ALIEN Chapter 25: 26
The revelation hit me with immense weight. What Varek had shown wasn’t just the beginning of our journey. What we were facing wasn’t an ordinary mission, but a battle that transcended everything we could imagine. The being at the center of the destruction, that entity with eyes that seemed to understand me, wasn’t just any enemy. It was an ancient force, something that had been unleashed and now threatened to consume everything around us.
I tried to breathe deeply, attempting to organize the thoughts that felt like a storm inside my head. The air around me was thick, charged with a dense and menacing energy. The feeling that we were in a spiritual battlefield, in a place where the natural laws seemed to no longer apply, grew stronger by the second. My body was tense, my mind spinning, and I didn’t know who to trust anymore.
Varek, who until then had seemed so immune to tension, was visibly shaken. His hands trembled slightly, and his eyes, usually so focused, now looked full of doubt. For the first time, he didn’t seem to have all the answers. I wanted to say something, offer some kind of support, but the reality was that we were completely alone in something much bigger than we could understand.
“Do you realize what we’re up against?” I managed to ask, my voice almost failing. The pressure of the moment made me want to run, but something inside me, a strange force, kept me from moving my feet.
Varek looked at me, and for a moment, something passed between us. The tension in the air seemed to intensify. He knew what was at stake, but he couldn’t, or didn’t want to, tell me the full truth. I could feel it. He was hiding something from me, and that sense of not knowing the entirety of what we were up against made me question whether I should have come this far with him.
“I know,” Varek finally replied, his voice low, almost grim. “But we have no choice. Destiny brought us here, and now we must face it head-on.”
I felt small in front of him, in front of everything. The sense of helplessness was overwhelming. But at the same time, I knew there was no turning back. The mission we had started now seemed like something insurmountable, an abyss from which we couldn’t escape. I wanted to find a way out, a way to turn back, but there was no more time. Whatever was going to happen, would happen now, and we would be forced to live with the consequences of our choices.
“So what do we do now?” I asked, almost hopeless. What I wanted to hear from Varek wasn’t a vague answer. I needed something solid, something that would give me the faintest sense of control over the situation. But looking at him, I realized he was adrift as well. There were no more certainties. Only the unknown ahead of us.
“Now,” he said, his voice more tense, “we face what’s coming. We have no other choice.”
I didn’t know what else to say. There were no more words that could ease the weight of our reality. So, we remained silent, the two of us, while the distant sound of the entity that was watching us grew louder. I felt like I was being observed, watched by something much older and more powerful than both of us combined.
And then, the vision of the temple began to change. The walls, once solid and imposing, started to move, to distort. The structure that had seemed impenetrable now appeared alive, as if the very building was trying to swallow us. The runes that had started to glow now pulsed with an intensity so strong it seemed like the ground beneath our feet could collapse at any moment.
“Varek,” I said, my voice trembling. “What’s happening?”
He looked at me, his face rigid, but something in his eyes showed that he too didn’t have answers. “I don’t know,” he said, his voice faltering. “But we must go on.”
I wanted to protest, say that maybe it was better to turn back, but a force, an irresistible energy, made me stay where I was. I couldn’t leave anymore, couldn’t retreat. The feeling of being trapped, with no options, squeezed my chest. I was completely at the mercy of whatever was about to happen next.
It was then that the sound echoed again, louder and more intense than before. The voice, deep and almost supernatural, reverberated through the walls of the temple, making the ground vibrate beneath our feet.
“Who dares to invoke the ancient power?” The voice spoke, the reverberation nearly making me lose consciousness. The power of that presence was overwhelming. I felt weak, insignificant in front of it, but at the same time, there was an attraction, an inexplicable connection. It was as if the entity wanted to know me, as if it was inviting me to become part of something much greater.
“We are,” Varek finally replied, his voice firm but also filled with some fear. “We came in search of answers.”
I felt the tension in the air grow even stronger, threatening to turn into something much worse. The runes around us began to glow even more intensely, almost blinding us with their light. The heat radiating from them was almost unbearable, and the sound of the ancient voice filled every inch of the temple.
And then I heard another voice. Softer, sweeter, but equally urgent.
“Carmem, you don’t understand what’s happening.” It was Theresa’s voice, and I recognized it immediately. I looked around, trying to locate the source of the voice, but no one was there except the two of us. “You need to leave here. Varek is being manipulated.”
Those words hit me like an electric shock. I wanted to respond, ask what she meant by that, but the pressure in the environment grew, and Theresa’s voice disappeared like a whisper carried away by the wind. Her words still echoed in my mind, but now, with the entity watching, I no longer knew who to trust. Varek, the one person I believed was my ally, now seemed involved in something much bigger, and I wasn’t sure he was still the same person I had known.
I looked at him, feeling the weight of doubt in my chest. He noticed my hesitation and moved closer. His eyes were fixed on mine, as if trying to convince me of something. But what he didn’t know, or maybe did know, was that I no longer had any certainty about what was happening. I needed answers, but I didn’t know where to find them. Varek, the only person I trusted, now seemed like part of a much larger game, and I wasn’t sure if I was still on the right side.
“You have to trust me,” he said, more agitated than usual. His voice trembled, but he tried to convey a confidence that, for some reason, now seemed empty. “What we’re facing here is much bigger than you imagine.”
I wanted to believe him. I wanted, with all my heart, to believe that he was telling me the truth. But the feeling that something was wrong, that both of us were being manipulated, only grew stronger. I knew the situation was out of control, and doubt was now the only thing left between us.
“I... don’t know,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “I don’t know who to trust anymore.”
The runes around us shone even brighter, and I knew that the moment of truth was approaching. I just didn’t know how much I was ready to face it.
