CAPTURED BY THE ALIEN Chapter 26: 27

I couldn't shake off the feeling of dread that gnawed at me. Every moment we stood there in the eerie glow of the temple, the sense of impending doom seemed to grow stronger, swallowing up everything around us. The very air was charged with an unspoken threat, and the power from the runes seemed to pulse with an unnatural rhythm, drawing us deeper into the mystery we couldn’t fully comprehend.

Varek’s presence beside me felt both comforting and unsettling. I wanted to believe in him, to trust that the man I had traveled with could guide us through whatever this ancient force was, but every glance I exchanged with him only made my doubts more pronounced. His eyes, which once held the confidence of a leader, now betrayed the same uncertainty I was grappling with. He wasn’t sure either. Not anymore.

The voice—deep and eternal—echoed once more, reverberating through the stone walls of the temple. It wasn’t just a sound, it was a vibration that seeped into my very bones, shaking me to the core.

"Who dares to defy the ancient law?" the voice demanded, each syllable heavy with the weight of time itself. "Who awakens what was meant to stay buried?"

The words hit like a physical blow, sending a shiver of fear coursing through me. My hands trembled as I reached for Varek’s arm, instinctively seeking some sort of anchor in the chaos that was rapidly closing in around us. He didn’t react immediately, and for a moment, I feared I had lost him completely. But then he slowly turned his gaze to meet mine, his expression unreadable.

“We have no choice,” he whispered, though the words barely seemed to hold the strength they once did. “We must proceed.”

I swallowed hard, trying to muster the courage to speak, to challenge the unknown that was creeping closer. But how could I defy something so old, so vast, when I barely understood the world I had stumbled into? How could we face it when even Varek, the person who seemed to know so much, didn’t have the answers?

"What if we can’t stop it?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper, fear choking my words. "What if we’re already too late?"

Varek didn’t answer right away, and in that silence, I could hear the creeping doubt that threatened to suffocate me. I had come here seeking answers, but now all I had were more questions, more uncertainty, more fear.

And yet, beneath all of that, there was a fire, a flicker of something deep inside me that refused to be extinguished. The temptation to run, to escape, was overwhelming, but I knew that was no longer an option. There was nowhere left to go. The past, the future, everything had collided in this moment, and we were caught in its orbit. There was only forward, into whatever darkness awaited us.

A deep rumbling echoed through the temple, and the ground beneath us began to tremble. The runes flared brighter, their light blinding, and the very air seemed to constrict around us. I gasped as the temperature suddenly dropped, the chill cutting through my skin like ice.

From the shadows, a figure slowly emerged. At first, I couldn’t make out any details, just a silhouette that seemed to shift and ripple like smoke. But as it drew closer, the shape became more distinct, and I felt a cold wave of terror wash over me. The figure was tall, almost impossibly so, with dark robes that billowed like tendrils of night. Its face was obscured by a hood, but I could feel its eyes on me, piercing through the darkness.

Varek stiffened beside me, his entire body tense. He didn’t move, didn’t speak. I could feel the weight of his hesitation.

“Do you know who this is?” I asked, my voice trembling as I looked up at him.

Varek’s lips parted, but the words didn’t come immediately. It was as if he were searching for the right answer, or perhaps trying to decide how much he should reveal. Finally, he exhaled sharply and nodded, though there was no certainty in his eyes.

“Yes,” he said quietly. “This is the Guardian.”

The figure before us stepped forward, its movements fluid and unnervingly graceful. Despite its ethereal nature, there was a heaviness to its presence that made the very air feel suffocating. I couldn’t help but take a step back, instinctively drawing closer to Varek for protection. He, too, seemed to be holding back, unsure of what to do next.

The Guardian’s voice, when it finally came, was low and ancient, like the whisper of the earth itself.

“You have come seeking power,” it said, its gaze never leaving me. “But do you understand the price? Do you understand what it will cost you to wield what is beyond your comprehension?”

I froze, the words sinking deep into my chest. The price. I had heard of power, had craved it, but I had never truly understood what it meant to sacrifice for it.

Varek stepped forward, his expression hardening as he addressed the Guardian.

“We don’t have time for riddles,” he said, his voice firm, though I could still hear the undercurrent of fear. “We need answers. Now.”

The Guardian regarded him with an almost bored expression, then turned its attention back to me. There was something almost pitying in its gaze, as if it knew the path I was about to walk and what it would cost me.

“You are not ready,” the Guardian intoned. “The path you seek will lead you into darkness, and there will be no return. Do you understand the consequences of your actions?”

I looked at Varek, and for the first time, I saw the weight of everything he had been carrying. He was just as trapped in this as I was, and perhaps even more so. We were both at the mercy of forces much greater than us.

“I understand,” I said, my voice surprisingly steady. “I don’t have a choice anymore.”

The Guardian’s gaze lingered on me for a long moment, then it nodded, almost imperceptibly. It stepped aside, and I felt the oppressive energy that had been suffocating us lift, just slightly.

“Then you will learn,” the Guardian said, its voice fading into the ether. “But remember, every choice has its price.”

With those final words, the figure disappeared into the shadows, leaving us alone again in the temple. The silence that followed was almost deafening, and for a moment, I was unsure of what to do next.

Varek turned to me, his face grim. “We have to move forward,” he said, his voice low. “No matter what.”

I nodded, though doubt still lingered in the pit of my stomach. The path ahead was unclear, but I knew one thing for certain now: there was no turning back. Whatever this force was, we were part of it now, and we would have to face it, no matter the

cost.
