CAPTURED BY THE ALIEN Chapter 21: 22

The sound of soft footsteps approaching pulled us out of our silent reflection. I looked at Varek, who seemed to be on full alert, his hand still on the sword's hilt. I knew he was worried, but he said nothing. The silence was heavier now, more intense. Something was about to happen, and I didn’t know if I was ready for it.

The figure that appeared before us was different from the previous one. She didn’t have the same air of authority or mystery, but her eyes were equally piercing, as if she could see through us. It was a woman, younger than I had expected, with long dark hair tied in a simple hairstyle. She wore clothes made of animal hides, which seemed to belong to another era, and her skin had a golden hue, as if bathed by the sunlight. There was no doubt she belonged to that place, and she wasn’t someone we could approach carelessly.

She didn’t introduce herself, but her eyes indicated that she was watching us with curiosity, a mixture of caution and something else. It was as if she was waiting for something from us.

"Who are you?" I asked, my voice hesitant but firm. I didn’t want to show fear, but I didn’t know if that would be enough to keep me safe.

She stared at me for a moment, her gaze distant, as if pondering my question, and then she answered, “I am Alira, the guardian of this forest. Not many manage to cross the veil between the worlds. And you, why did you try to do so?”

Varek stepped forward, trying to maintain his confident posture, but I saw the tension in his shoulders. He didn’t know the answer, just like I didn’t, but he had to give an explanation. “We were pulled here. We didn’t want to come, but now we’re here, and we need answers. How do we leave?”

Alira didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she looked toward the horizon, where the trees stood like sentinels, their shadows stretching toward us. The feeling of discomfort grew, as if the forest itself was watching us.

“There’s no simple way to leave, Varek,” she said, her voice soft but filled with an authority that made me shiver. “You’ve crossed the threshold of the world of the living and entered the realm of the lost. Here, the laws you know do not apply. What you call ‘answers’ will not be given freely.”

I furrowed my brow, my mind racing for some understanding. “But how do we go back home? We can’t stay here, this… this isn’t real.”

“You’re not trapped, but you’re not free either,” Alira replied, taking a step closer but still keeping a safe distance. “Here, every soul that passes is tested. The only way to return to your world is to overcome the challenges that lie at the heart of the forest.”

I looked at Varek, searching for an explanation. He seemed so determined, but now I saw that the situation was far more complicated than he wanted to admit. Alira’s words were echoing in my mind: challenges at the heart of the forest. I had no idea what that meant, but I knew I needed an answer. And fast.

“Challenges?” I asked, my voice trembling slightly. “What kind of challenges?”

Alira smiled faintly, but not kindly. There was something enigmatic in her smile, something that made me question whether we were truly ready for whatever lay ahead.

“The forest is alive. Every step you take here, every movement you make, will be watched and judged. Your weaknesses, your fears, everything you are will be challenged. Only those who manage to overcome these trials will be able to cross the veil and return to their world.”

A chill ran down my spine. I wasn’t prepared for this. No one was. It wasn’t a matter of whether we wanted to; it was a matter of survival. I knew I had no choice but to face these trials. And I didn’t know what awaited me.

“How do we begin?” Varek asked, his tone graver now. He seemed to already understand there was no turning back.

Alira turned and gestured for us to follow. “The journey begins now. The first trial lies ahead.”

She didn’t explain anything further, but we began walking, our steps heavy, the air thick around us. The forest felt alive, in a way I couldn’t explain, but I could feel it. It was as though the trees, the rocks, even the ground itself, were paying attention to every move we made. I looked back, but the clearing was becoming distant, and the only sound we could hear now was the wind whispering through the leaves.

The tension was palpable.

“Varek, what do you think of this?” I whispered, still trying to understand how he was dealing with the situation. He seemed calm, but there was something in his eyes that didn’t go unnoticed. It was a mix of exhaustion and resolve.

“I don’t know,” he admitted finally. “But we need to do this. We have no other choice.”

His response didn’t reassure me, but there wasn’t much I could do. We were trapped in a place between worlds, and the only way out was to face the trials that awaited us.

The forest seemed to narrow around us, the trees growing taller, their shadows deeper, until the sunlight barely touched the ground. It was as though we were entering an unknown part, a territory where the boundaries between the real and the supernatural blurred. Every step took us further into the darkness, and I felt a presence, something watching us.

Suddenly, the air grew thicker, the sensation of heat and cold alternating across my skin. I looked at Varek, who was ahead, his hand tense on his sword.

“Are we ready?” I asked, my voice softer now. Anxiety was growing within me, but there was something else too. Something I couldn’t identify, but I felt it in the air.

“We are,” Varek replied. But I didn’t know if he truly believed his words.
