CAPTURED BY THE ALIEN Chapter 9: 09

The glow of the Veydra pulsed rhythmically, lighting the clearing with its radiant energy. My body ached, and I could feel every cell in me tingling, as if I had been reassembled from the inside out. Varek knelt beside me, offering his hand to help me stand. His touch felt steady, grounding, even though the air between us now seemed charged with something unspoken.

“Take it slow,” he said, his voice softer than I expected.

I nodded, struggling to my feet. My legs wobbled as though they had forgotten how to hold my weight, and Varek stayed close, his presence reassuring.

“What just happened?” I asked, my voice shaky.

“You bonded with the Veydra,” Varek said. “Its energy flows through you now, connecting you to our world.”

I looked down at my hands, expecting to see some visible sign of the change, but they looked the same as ever. Yet, deep inside, I could feel something different—a spark of warmth, a pulse of life that wasn’t there before.

“It feels… strange,” I admitted.

“That’s natural,” Varek replied. “The connection will strengthen over time. You’ll learn to channel its power.”

His words filled me with a mix of wonder and dread. What kind of power was he talking about? What would this bond mean for me?

“Why me?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Varek’s expression darkened, and he glanced at the Veydra, its light reflecting in his eyes. “The Veydra chooses based on need, not worth,” he said. “It saw in you what we couldn’t—a link, a bridge between worlds.”

His words felt heavy, as though they carried a weight he didn’t fully understand.

Before I could press him further, a sharp sound echoed through the clearing—a low, guttural growl that sent chills down my spine.

“What was that?” I asked, instinctively stepping closer to Varek.

He was already on high alert, his hand resting on the hilt of a blade at his side. “We’re not alone,” he said, his voice tense.

The growl came again, louder this time, and from the shadows of the alien forest emerged a creature unlike anything I had ever seen. Its body was sleek and muscular, covered in iridescent scales that shimmered in the light of the Veydra. Its eyes glowed with a predatory intensity, and its claws dug into the mossy ground as it stalked toward us.

“Stay behind me,” Varek commanded, drawing his blade in one swift motion.

I didn’t need to be told twice. My heart pounded as I watched the creature circle us, its movements graceful and deadly.

“Is it… one of yours?” I asked, my voice trembling.

Varek shook his head, his gaze never leaving the creature. “No. It’s a predator—a guardian of the Veydra. It must sense the change in the energy.”

“Guardian?” I echoed, trying to keep the panic out of my voice. “I thought the Veydra wanted me here.”

“It does,” Varek said, his tone grim. “But the guardians don’t understand. They only see intruders.”

The creature lunged, faster than I could react. Varek moved to intercept it, his blade slicing through the air with precision. The clash of steel against the creature’s claws sent sparks flying, and the force of the impact pushed Varek back a step.

I stumbled backward, my heart racing as the battle unfolded before me. Varek was skilled, his movements calculated and efficient, but the creature was relentless. Its attacks came in rapid succession, and for every strike Varek landed, it seemed to grow more furious.

“Carmem!” Varek shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos. “Use the Veydra’s energy! Focus!”

“I don’t know how!” I cried, panic bubbling up inside me.

“You do!” he insisted, parrying another attack. “It’s in you now. Trust it!”

I closed my eyes, trying to block out the sounds of the fight. The warmth I had felt earlier, the spark of energy deep within me—I reached for it, willing it to rise.

At first, there was nothing, just the pounding of my heart and the rush of adrenaline. But then, slowly, I felt it—a current of power, faint but steady, pulsing in time with the Veydra’s glow.

I opened my eyes, and the world seemed sharper, more vibrant. The creature was preparing to strike again, but this time, I didn’t feel helpless.

Raising my hands, I focused on the energy, willing it to flow outward. A burst of light erupted from my palms, hitting the creature square in the chest. It let out a deafening roar and staggered backward, its iridescent scales dimming.

Varek seized the opportunity, delivering a final blow that sent the creature collapsing to the ground.

For a moment, the clearing was silent, save for the heavy breathing of both Varek and me.

“You did it,” Varek said, his voice filled with a mixture of relief and awe.

I stared at my hands, which still tingled with residual energy. “I… I didn’t know I could do that.”

“Neither did I,” he admitted, sheathing his blade. “But now we know what you’re capable of.”

I looked at the fallen creature, guilt and fear swirling in my chest. “What if I can’t control it?”

“You will,” Varek said, his tone firm. “The Veydra chose you for a reason. Trust in it—and in yourself.”

His words were meant to reassure me, but they only deepened the sense of responsibility weighing on my shoulders. This wasn’t just about me anymore. It was about this world, this bond, and whatever destiny lay ahead.
