CAPTURED BY THE ALIEN Chapter 17: 18
The pressure increased. Each breath became more difficult, and a sense of dread spread through my body. I felt as if time itself was distorting around us, as if reality was disintegrating. The temple was reacting to our presence in a way I couldn’t understand. Something was about to happen, and I didn’t know if I’d be able to endure it.
Varek was growing more distant, as if he were in another world, lost in something I couldn’t see. He seemed to be listening to something, something I couldn’t comprehend. His expression was tense, but there was a determination in his gaze that made me question everything I thought I knew about him. I didn’t know who to trust anymore.
“Varek!” I yelled, but my voice was swallowed by the growing force of the energy around us. “What’s happening? Are you hiding something from me?”
He didn’t answer immediately. His eyes were fixed on something ahead, something invisible to me, but which seemed to have all his focus. I could see the muscles in his neck tightening, his jaw clenched. He was fighting something, and I didn’t know whether it was an external force or an internal battle.
When he finally turned to me, there was a shadow in his eyes, a dark thing I had never seen before. “I can’t explain right now,” he said, his voice quieter, almost inaudible. “But you need to trust me, Carmem. I’m doing this for us, for all of us.”
“Doing what?” I couldn’t control myself. I needed to know, to understand what was happening. “Varek, what’s going on with you? This isn’t about answers anymore. I… I don’t know if I can keep going like this.”
He took a step toward me, his hands slightly trembling. There was something more, something he wasn’t telling me, and that terrified me. But then, before he could speak, a wave of energy filled the space, interrupting our words.
The runes began to glow intensely again, and the sound of the temple turned into a deafening roar, as if an ancient force was about to be released. I fell to the ground, feeling the energy vibrating through my body. The earth beneath me trembled, and the temple walls seemed to bend to swallow us whole.
Suddenly, an image appeared before me. It was vague, distorted, but I knew it was important. It was a figure cloaked in shadows, with eyes that seemed to glow like flames. The presence was familiar, but I couldn’t immediately understand who it was. The figure approached, and a chill ran down my spine.
“Carmem…” the voice was soft, but filled with a veiled threat. “You don’t understand what’s happening, you don’t understand your role here.”
I stood up, trying to stay calm, but the pressure in the air was becoming unbearable. “Who are you?” I shouted. “What’s happening to Varek? What is he hiding from me?”
The figure laughed, a low and chilling sound that reverberated through the temple walls. “He’s doing what must be done. And you, Carmem… you are just a piece in this game. It’s not time for you to learn the truth.”
The words hit me like a punch to the stomach. I didn’t want to believe what I was hearing, but the feeling that I was being manipulated, that Varek was hiding something, consumed me. I couldn’t trust anyone anymore. Everything seemed to be turning into a big game, and I didn’t know what my role was.
Before I could respond, the image vanished, and the temple returned to its unsettling silence. The air around us was heavy, and I felt a sense of despair that made me want to run away. But I knew there was no escape anymore. We were trapped. And somehow, I knew that whatever it was Varek was searching for, it wasn’t something he could control.
“Varek…” my voice trembled. “What have you done? What does this mean?”
He looked at me with an unreadable expression, as if he was preparing to say something, but the words seemed to escape him. He was confused, lost, and I knew that, somehow, he too was trying to understand what he had done. But the truth was, he had already made a decision, and there was no turning back.
“I don’t know what’s happening,” he finally said, his voice low and tense. “But we need to keep going. We can’t give up now.”
I looked at him, my heart tight. I wanted to believe him, I wanted to trust what he was saying, but the image of that shadowy figure was still etched in my mind. I could no longer ignore the fact that something was terribly wrong.
The temple began to tremble again, stronger this time, and the sense of danger grew. I knew something was about to happen, something that would change everything.
