CAPTURED BY THE ALIEN Chapter 20: 21

The creature’s claws scraped against the stone floor, a terrible screeching sound that pierced the air. I could feel the heat of its breath on my neck, and I forced myself to move faster, my legs feeling like they might give way at any moment. The portal was within reach, just a few more steps, but I could hear the creature’s snarls growing louder, more urgent.

“Carmem!” Varek shouted again, his voice full of panic. “We have to make it!”

I pushed myself harder, my heart pounding in my chest, my body screaming for mercy. But the portal was just ahead, glowing like a beacon in the endless darkness. The creature’s growls were deafening now, the sound vibrating the ground beneath us. I didn’t dare look back, but I could sense its presence closing in on us.

Just as we reached the edge of the portal, a powerful force hit me from behind, knocking me off my feet. My body was flung forward, and I cried out, my hands scraping against the cold stone. I glanced over my shoulder and saw the creature, its monstrous form towering above me, its jaws snapping as it lunged for me.

“No!” I screamed, pushing myself up, but my legs were weak, and I couldn’t move fast enough. The creature’s claws were just inches from my back when Varek reached out and grabbed my arm, pulling me into the portal.

We both tumbled through, the force of the creature’s last growl fading as we were sucked into the swirling energy. I closed my eyes, my body spinning as though caught in a vortex. My stomach lurched, and I felt as though I was being torn apart by the force of the transition.

And then, just as suddenly as it had begun, everything stopped.

I opened my eyes slowly, the dizziness overwhelming, and saw that we were no longer in the dark void. The air was thick with the scent of moss and earth, and I could hear the distant sound of rushing water. My heart was still racing, but I could feel the pressure in my chest easing, the weight of the darkness lifting.

I sat up, my body trembling from the exertion, and glanced around. The forest stretched out before us, thick trees towering high above, their leaves whispering in the breeze. It was quiet here, almost too quiet. The stillness was unsettling, and I instinctively reached for Varek, my eyes scanning the surroundings.

“Are we… safe?” I asked, my voice weak, unsure if the words even made sense. Could we really be safe after everything that had just happened?

Varek didn’t answer immediately. He stood up slowly, his face a mask of concentration as he surveyed the forest. His eyes flickered to the horizon, then back to me. There was something different in his expression now, something colder, something… distant.

“I think so,” he said finally, but his voice was strained. “But we’re not out of danger yet.”

I frowned. “What do you mean? We escaped that creature. We’re safe now, aren’t we?”

Varek shook his head, his eyes darkening. “That wasn’t just a creature, Carmem. That was a guardian of the void. The portal we passed through wasn’t meant to bring us here. It’s a place between worlds—a limbo.”

I felt a chill spread through me. A limbo? “You mean… we’re not in our world?”

“No,” he replied quietly. “We’re somewhere else. A place lost between realms. And we’re not alone here.”

I swallowed hard, my mind racing to process everything he had just said. “So… we’re stuck here? In this… limbo?”

Varek nodded grimly. “For now, yes. We don’t know what else is here, but there are other dangers in this place. The guardians, the spirits of the void. We’ll need to be careful.”

The weight of his words settled over me like a shroud, and for the first time in a long while, I felt the creeping sensation of fear slithering down my spine. I had come here seeking answers, but now I was more lost than ever.

“We need to find a way out,” I said, my voice trembling, but there was a determination in it. “There has to be a way back.”

Varek gave me a hard look, his eyes flickering with something I couldn’t quite place. “We don’t even know where ‘back’ is, Carmem. This place doesn’t follow the rules we know. Time doesn’t work the same way here.”

I opened my mouth to protest, but before I could say anything, there was a rustling noise in the trees. I froze, my breath catching in my throat. Varek was already moving, his hand reaching for his blade as he crouched low, his eyes scanning the darkness between the trees.

A figure stepped forward from the shadows, emerging from the mist that swirled around the trees. It was tall, cloaked in dark robes, and its face was obscured by a hood. The only thing I could make out were its glowing eyes, staring at us with an intensity that made my heart race.

“Who are you?” I demanded, my voice more forceful than I felt. I took a step back, instinctively positioning myself between Varek and the figure.

The figure didn’t respond immediately. Instead, it took a slow step forward, its movements graceful but deliberate. The air seemed to grow colder with each passing second, and I could feel the energy shifting around us.

“I am a keeper of this place,” the figure finally spoke, its voice soft but full of authority. “And you should not have come here.”

Varek’s grip on his blade tightened, but he didn’t draw it. “We didn’t have a choice,” he said, his voice low but steady. “The void pulled us here. We need to get back.”

The keeper’s eyes narrowed, and for a moment, the world seemed to hold its breath. “You cannot return the way you came. Once you’ve crossed the threshold into this place, you are bound to it.”

I felt a surge of panic rise in my chest. “No,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “We can’t be trapped here.”

The keeper stepped closer, its presence overwhelming. “You are not trapped, but you are bound,” it said. “And to leave, you must first face the trials of the void.”

“Trials?” Varek repeated, his tone skeptical. “What kind of trials?”

The keeper’s glowing eyes flickered with an unreadable emotion. “The trials of the void will test your strength, your will, and your heart. Only those who succeed can return.”

I felt a shiver run down my spine. “What happens if we fail?”

The keeper’s eyes glowed brighter, and its voice dropped to a whisper. “Then you will remain here, lost between the worlds, forever.”

The gravity of its words sank in, and for a moment, I didn’t know how to react. We had already come so far, survived so much, but this… this was something I hadn’t anticipated.

Varek stood tall, his eyes locked onto the keeper. “We’ll face whatever trials you throw at us,” he said, his voice steady despite the uncertainty in his eyes.

The keeper gave a small nod, and in an instant, it was gone, disappearing into the shadows as if it had never been there.

I stood there in the eerie silence, my heart racing. The reality of our situation was sinking in. We weren’t just lost. We were trapped in a place that didn’t follow the rules of reality.

“We’ll make it out of here,” Varek said quietly, though his voice lacked the usual conviction. He didn’t believe it any more than I did.
