Silas sat beside me, holding a washed moonlight fruit to my lips.

"Rebecca, who told you the Thorne Coven was poor? Look around our room. From the carpet to the vases, isn't every single item a priceless antique?"

The room was furnished with a simple, elegant style. I had never paid close attention before. But now that I looked, every object indeed exuded a quiet, understated luxury.

"But isn't it common knowledge that your coven has the lowest status in the Alliance and gets no resources?"

Silas let out a soft laugh.

"The Thorne Coven has always been discreet. Our wealth comes from centuries of investments and business ventures, unlike other families who rely on the Alliance's power distribution. If you were to rank us by wealth, we'd be number one, and no one would dare claim otherwise."

"Our family values the purity of our bloodline and the enhancement of our power. Most of our wealth is spent on acquiring ancient magical artifacts and knowledge. The resources in this world are finite, and we have no intention of fighting the other families for worldly power. Our ambitions are much greater."

Hearing him say that, it all clicked into place. No wonder every member of the Thorne Coven I'd met carried an air of mysterious nobility. They were all secretly practicing ancient forms of power.

After learning the Thorne Coven was far from broke, I immediately had Silas take me shopping in the city.

On the way, we ran into Chloe, who was also sporting a large baby bump. She was affectionately clinging to Marcus's arm as they browsed for jewelry.

With Marcus watching her like a hawk this time, the child in her belly could only be his.

"Sister, fancy seeing you out and about," Chloe said, deliberately placing her hands on her stomach, making sure I saw that she was pregnant again.

I smiled at her. "Father's birthday is coming up soon. I'm just picking out a gift for him."

Chloe glanced at my and Silas's empty hands and sneered. "Well, you two had better choose carefully. Even if you're broke, you can't let Father lose face, can you?"

The Thorne Coven hadn't announced my pregnancy yet. Silas, fearing I would get upset, stepped in front of me.

"You don't need to worry about our family matters, Miss Chloe. We will of course put great thought into our father-in-law's gift."

Chloe scoffed and walked away.

A week later, at the party, Chloe and I were seated on either side of our father.

This time, Chloe's belly was abnormally large; it was obvious she was carrying more than one. In contrast, my stomach was still only slightly rounded.

"Rebecca, you knew the method to get pregnant all along and you deliberately hid it from me," Chloe hissed.

"But I got the upper hand this time. You can't beat me."

Just as I was about to ask her what she meant, a sharp pain shot through my abdomen. It was the start of labor.

Silas immediately noticed something was wrong. He stood up, scooped me into his arms, and headed for the door.
