The Widow's Death Chapter 10
The case was getting harder and harder to solve.
The killer was highly intelligent. Detective Russo periodically received photos.
Credit union angle, power station angle.
Later, they were directly of the front door.
Each time they couldn't trace anyone. It was like the surveillance couldn't capture them.
Only the first time did they catch an old man.
"Let's go ask this old man. Maybe there's a clue."
The case had now been going on for ten days.
Zero progress.
"Okay."
Especially with the pressure from above.
The officers were demoralized. Detective Russo looked ten years older.
The old man was named Harold Bell, seventy-eight, from Millbrook, District Three.
When Detective Russo and his team arrived at his house, they startled Harold's family.
Fortunately, it was just to assist with the investigation.
Seeing the photo, old Harold opened his gappy mouth.
"Some young guy said there were lots of bottles up there, told me to go collect them and sell them for cash."
The officers perked up.
A lead!
"Sir, please continue. What did this young man look like? Do you know him?"
Harold shook his head.
"Don't know him, but he looked familiar. Young guy, short hair, not very tall. Should be a local."
Detective Russo had a bold idea—take Harold to Riverside for an identification!
"Mr. Bell, if you saw him again, could you recognize him?"
Harold looked unhappy.
"I may be old, but my memory's sharp. If I see him, I'll beat him with my cane."
Detective Russo asked with a smile.
"He gave you bottles. Why would you beat him?"
Better not to mention this. Mentioning it made the old man angry!
"That little bastard lied to an old man. There weren't any bottles up there, just a bunch of milk cartons, and they were empty too. Sure, cardboard can be sold, but couldn't he just say cardboard?"
Milk cartons?
Could the milk at Frank Wilson's house actually be problematic? He unconsciously glanced at the milk he'd bought for Harold.
"Thank you, sir. We also brought you some things. If you remember any other details, please contact me immediately."
He'd originally wanted to take Harold to Riverside, but now there were more leads to pursue.
