Riverside.

I was the one who made that call.

Because just moments ago, I received a letter.

"What's the lead?"

Detective Russo rushed into the room, looking anxiously at me.

I pointed to an envelope on the table.

Already opened.

After all, if mail came to me, I had to open it before reporting it to the police.

"You're all too slow. I can't wait to get free room and board. Step it up, dear friends. By the way, you've already found one-tenth of the clues. Keep investigating."

After reading the letter, Detective Russo took a deep breath.

They'd deployed lots of surveillance around the station. It should be impossible to slip through, so they hadn't received letters there in a while.

"Detective Russo, why did they send the letter to me?"

I was confused.

Detective Russo patted my shoulder, not knowing how to explain.

"Contact me if you hear anything."

I shrugged. Fine, don't tell me then. No big deal.

"Honey, people in town are saying they found a lead at Frank Wilson's house. Do you think they can solve the case?"

Rachel asked with a smile.

I stood up and stretched.

"Not sure. Haven't you noticed? Martha Henderson's case has basically been pushed aside. The killer probably wants to use Frank's case to make them give up investigating Martha's case."

"Of course, it's also possible the two cases have been merged. When they find Frank Wilson's killer, they'll have found Martha Henderson's killer too."

Rachel handed me her phone.

"What's this?"

"Just look."

I looked at the phone's contents, feeling confused.

A hit piece. A total hit piece.

A text message stretched into over a thousand words.

All accusing me of killing Martha Henderson.

Including motive, timeline, and method, all spelled out clearly.

"If they send this to Detective Russo, will he suspect you?"

Rachel asked worriedly.

"Look at how ridiculous the content is. They're saying after we made love, I knocked you unconscious and took you to Martha's house, killed her first, then put you under the mattress."

"Here's the problem—the mattress is full of springs. I wouldn't have had time to cut through them. And if Martha was conscious, wouldn't she have tried to stop me from cutting the springs?"

"If Martha died first and then I cut the springs, wouldn't the springs shooting out have injured her body or splattered blood on the walls?"

"So it wasn't me."

After listening, Rachel seemed convinced.

"Okay then. This text number is virtual anyway, can't be traced."

I ignored Rachel's muttering and busied myself with my own things.
