The Widow's Death Chapter 4

I figured I needed to replace my front door threshold. The number of people coming to my house these days was endless.

When Frank's family came over, we almost got into a fight.

They called me heartless, a bastard.

I admitted Frank had been good to me. When I moved back to this rural town, Frank had helped me with everything. I had no motive to kill him.

"David, right now you two are the breakthrough in this case. Have you received any phone calls these past few days?"

Detective Russo was asking about calls from Martha Henderson.

The evidence room had verified that the phone number had indeed been deactivated. The person who reactivated it was still Martha Henderson herself, at a service center in a small town in the county.

About twenty miles from Riverside, there must have been some shady dealings. They'd investigate slowly and find out, since how could a dead person reactivate a phone number.

They didn't rashly have the carrier deactivate it, since the case was still under investigation and the killer might call again.

Ring ring ring ring——

The phone rang urgently.

Instantly everyone's eyes were on me. The pressure was intense!

It was an unknown number. I breathed a sigh of relief.

"It's not that number."

That one sentence made everyone relax.

I answered the call with relief.

"Rachel is not a good person."

Beep beep beep——

My face went pale. The voice on the phone—was that Frank Wilson?

The detectives were stunned too.

"Give me the phone." Detective Russo grabbed my phone and sent the number to someone else.

"Quick, trace this number's location!"

About a minute or two later, they got a response.

"Detective Russo, we've traced it. The caller is in Riverside. The area is too large for precise location."

I felt chills down my spine. The killer was right here among us?

Detective Russo felt like he was being taunted.

In all his years on the job, he'd never seen such an arrogant criminal.

Killed someone and didn't run, just stayed in town waiting.

"Call for backup. Today, no one enters or leaves Riverside."

Rachel was still sitting on the couch, silent. Only after Detective Russo and his team left did she look at me with concern.

"Honey, will we be next?"

I rubbed the girl's head.

"Don't worry. Justice will prevail. They've already exposed their location. Detective Russo and his team will definitely catch them."
