The Widow's Death Chapter 9

2 min 134.2K views

I'd had some peace and quiet these past few days.

Detective Russo hadn't come looking for me, and the townspeople had returned to their busy lives. I just couldn't go out—every time I did, people gave me strange looks.

"Do you think the killer could be you?"

Living room.

Rachel suddenly looked at me.

I froze, looking at Rachel.

"Oh? Why do you ask that?" I smiled as I said this.

Rachel pulled a pen from her clothes.

"This is a camera. Even if I hadn't given you an alibi, you still could have gotten out."

I shook my head indifferently.

"No, if you suspect I'm the killer just because of a camera, that's going too far. You have a hidden camera too, don't you?"

Rachel looked at me. I looked at her.

"You're right. I've been paranoid these past few days, seeing problems in everyone. I wear a camera because I'm afraid of being framed. Why do you wear one?"

I shrugged helplessly.

"With all the rumors about us lately, if someone attacks me, wouldn't this be evidence?"

"When I went to warn Frank, what if he tried to frame me? Wouldn't this be evidence? You wore one too when we went together last time."

Rachel pouted.

That was true. She really was being neurotic.

"So who do you think has been texting and calling us?"

I thought for a moment.

"Probably the killer. They seem to deliberately be pulling us into this mystery, making the police focus on us, so there's less pressure on them."

"You didn't really offend anyone, did you?"

I asked Rachel.

"No, I'm such a homebody."

Outside, Detective Russo heard our conversation and tiptoed away.

Ten minutes later, Rachel finally relaxed.

"That scared me. You don't know—Detective Russo still suspects you. He wanted me to trick you into revealing something."

I was somewhat speechless.

But it was logical. If it really was me, my wife and I would definitely say something, or at least show some telltale signs.
