Seven Days Before the Apocalypse Chapter 10

4 min 109.7K views

Being the apocalypse, what had to come eventually came.

That night, the campus began experiencing intermittent water and power outages.

All lights in our building went dark.

The night was terrifyingly quiet.

Occasional roars made survivors throughout campus tremble.

I routinely took out two boxes of self-heating rice and an unopened jug of water from my cabinet.

This was our dinner—a delicacy in the eyes of apocalypse survivors.

But Grace and I found it tasteless.

Yes, besides snacks, we'd been eating self-heating rice for two days straight.

"Rain, do you hear something?" Grace suddenly stopped, leaning close to my ear.

"No, you must be hearing things!"

"There really is something. It's not a cockroach, is it? Oh my God, I hate cockroaches more than anything." Grace put down her food container, scared, grabbing my hand.

I pushed her hand away, laughing. "What? You're not afraid of zombies but you're afraid of that?"

That said, for safety's sake, we checked the entire dorm room again.

Nothing unusual found.

After yesterday's incident, neither Grace nor I slept well.

We felt something was off but couldn't pinpoint it.

After eating breakfast, we started another round of zombie clearing.

This routine continued for two or three more days.

Through this training, our physical condition had improved considerably.

This round yielded quite a harvest. Including previous cores, we'd gained 103 crystal cores total.

Our weapons had sustained varying degrees of damage.

Grace's axe was completely unusable.

Time to buy some weapons from the space shop.

We headed back to the dorm.

Several rooms cautiously opened their doors.

"Wow, how did they do that?"

"True warriors. Can you share some combat techniques?"

"Man, if only I were that strong. I really want to hit up the convenience store."

Admiring, envious, and hopeful gazes turned toward us.

Grace and I had attracted attention.

"Everyone, do you still have food? I... I haven't eaten in two days. Please, have mercy, help me out." A female student emerged from her dorm.

She was beautiful, eyes red as if she'd been crying, evoking sympathy.

But this was the apocalypse—everyone struggled to survive.

People turned their heads away, ignoring her.

Seeing no one respond, she targeted us.

"Hey, you two can kill so many zombies, you must have plenty of food. Can you spare me some? Please!"

As soon as she finished, everyone looked at Grace and me with greedy eyes.

I felt utterly speechless.

Where did this idiot come from?

If you'd asked me privately, I might have had a 0.1% chance of giving you something.

But now...

Everyone looking at us like wolves eyeing sheep—even if I wanted to give, I couldn't.

I frowned. "It's the apocalypse. Everyone knows how precious food is."

"Why do we have the courage to kill zombies? Because life forced us to... because we're almost out of food too."

"So instead of counting on us for food, count on yourselves. If everyone works together to kill zombies, we'll reach the store and find food."

Hearing they'd have to kill zombies, most students backed down.

Some went straight back to their rooms. Others began trading supplies.

"Come on, I'll trade a bread for a bottle of water!"

"I've got half a bottle of water left. I want ham."

"I don't have anything. I want water. I'm so thirsty. Will some kind soul give me a sip..."

Discussions continued. Grace and I weren't interested and prepared to leave.

Suddenly, a door was flung open violently, startling everyone.

Then a huge jug of water was thrown outside.

Everyone was stunned, including Grace and me.

"Damn, who's that rich? Which room?" I whispered to Grace.

"Uh, Rain, I think that's 503."

"What?"

"503—our room."

Huh???

Everyone wondered who had hoarded so much.

Grace and I were equally puzzled about who'd taken over our dorm.

The next moment, chips, bread, all kinds of crackers were tossed out, littering the floor.

They couldn't believe it was real.

"Rain Hart, Grace Garcia—classmates in need should help each other. How could you hoard food selfishly?"

With that familiar voice, a female student walked out.

When we saw her face clearly, Grace and I were both dumbfounded.
