Galaxy On Fire Chapter 12: 12. The Council’s ultimatum

Kai paced the narrow space outside the astrologer’s home, his mind racing. The weight of Maya’s condition and the astrologer’s grim solution already bore heavily on him, but the situation grew even more dire when a shadow fell over him—a signal he had been dreading.

A low hum resonated through the air, and Kai stopped in his tracks, his entire body tensing. A metallic orb, shimmering with iridescent light, hovered before him. The Council’s symbol glowed on its surface, a cruel reminder of their authority.

“Kai,” the orb projected in a cold, dispassionate voice. It was one of the Council's messengers, a device used to deliver their will. “You have disregarded our orders to eliminate the human and have further endangered our realm by harboring her.”

Kai’s fists clenched, but he said nothing.

“Her transformation is incomplete,” the voice continued. “It has destabilized her body, creating a threat to our world’s energy balance. This cannot be tolerated. There is only one course of action left.”

Kai’s heart sank as the voice continued, each word sharper than the last.

“You must marry the human and claim her as your mate. By binding her to our system, her transformation will stabilize, and the energy imbalance will cease. This union is the only way to ensure her survival and maintain the integrity of our world.”

The orb paused, its glow intensifying. “Fail to comply, and both of you will face elimination.”

With that, the orb dissolved into thin air, leaving Kai standing in the oppressive silence of its wake. His jaw tightened, anger and frustration swirling within him. The Council always had a way of forcing him into impossible situations, and this time was no different.

He turned back toward the astrologer’s home, where Maya was resting, unaware of the ultimatum that now hung over their heads.

Inside, Maya sat on the cot, her arms wrapped around herself. Her green-tinged skin seemed even more pronounced now, and her eyes held a haunted look. She glanced up as Kai entered, his expression grim.

“What happened?” she asked softly, her voice tinged with worry.

Kai hesitated for a moment before sitting down across from her. “I just received a message from the Council,” he said, his tone low.

Her brows furrowed. “What did they say?”

Kai sighed, running a hand through his hair. “They’ve given me an ultimatum. Either we marry, and you complete the transformation, or… we both die.”

Maya stared at him, her mouth slightly open as she processed his words. “They’re serious?”

“They’re always serious,” Kai muttered. “The Council doesn’t give second chances.”

A heavy silence settled between them. Maya looked down at her hands, her fingers trembling slightly. “So, that’s it?” she said bitterly. “I either marry you and lose what’s left of my humanity, or I die?”

Kai’s voice softened. “It’s not about losing who you are, Maya. It’s about saving your life.”

She looked up at him, her eyes filled with frustration and pain. “Do you think this is easy for me? I was dragged into your world against my will, forced to fight for survival, and now I’m being told I have to marry an alien prince to live?”

Kai flinched at her words but held her gaze. “Do you think this is easy for me?” he shot back, his voice rising slightly. “I didn’t ask for this either. I didn’t want to put you in this position. But I can’t stand by and watch you die, Maya. I won’t.”

Her anger faltered at the raw emotion in his voice. She searched his face, seeing the genuine concern and torment behind his sharp words.

“What happens if we… if we go through with this?” she asked quietly.

Kai leaned back, his eyes hardening. “If we marry, your transformation will complete. You’ll become one of us in body, but you’ll still be you—your mind, your heart, everything that makes you who you are. The Council will consider you part of our world, and they’ll leave you alone.”

“And if we don’t?”

Kai’s jaw tightened. “They’ll kill you. And me.”

Maya let out a shaky breath, her mind reeling. “This doesn’t feel like a choice,” she said bitterly.

“It’s not,” Kai admitted. “But it’s the only way to keep you alive.”

She looked away, her hands clenching into fists. “What about you?” she asked after a moment.

“What about me?”

“This isn’t just my life we’re talking about. You’d be tied to me too. Is that what you want?”

Kai hesitated, his heart pounding. He hadn’t let himself fully consider the implications for himself, too focused on keeping Maya safe. But the truth was, the thought of being bound to her didn’t scare him as much as it should have.

“I want you alive,” he said simply. “Everything else comes second.”

Maya’s eyes softened, and for a moment, they simply looked at each other, the weight of the situation hanging between them.

The astrologer entered the room then, breaking the tense silence. He glanced between them, his expression unreadable.

“I assume the Council has delivered their decree,” he said, his voice calm.

Kai nodded. “They’ve made their position clear. We have no choice.”

The astrologer nodded slowly. “Then I suggest you prepare yourselves. The bonding ceremony must take place soon if she is to survive.”

Maya’s stomach churned at the astrologer’s words. “What does that mean, exactly? A bonding ceremony?”

The astrologer turned to her, his gaze piercing. “It is the formal recognition of a union between two souls. In our world, it is a sacred act, binding your lives together. Once completed, your transformation will stabilize, and your connection to this world will be solidified.”

Maya swallowed hard. “And what about… the rest of it? The child?”

The astrologer’s expression didn’t waver. “That will come in time. The child is necessary to ensure the transformation remains permanent. But for now, the ceremony will suffice.”

Maya’s head spun, her emotions a chaotic storm. She felt trapped, like a pawn in a game she didn’t understand. But as she looked at Kai, she saw the weight of his own struggles reflected in his eyes.

“I need time to think,” she said quietly, her voice trembling.

The astrologer nodded. “Take the time you need. But remember—every moment you delay brings you closer to the edge.”

As the astrologer left the room, Kai reached out and gently took Maya’s hand.

“I know this isn’t what you wanted,” he said softly. “But we’ll get through this together. I promise.”

Maya looked at him, her heart heavy. “I hope you’re right,” she whispered.

The path ahead was uncertain, and the stakes had never been higher. But for now, they could only take one step at a time—and hope that their bond would be enough to carry them through.
