Galaxy On Fire Chapter 23: 24. The cost of defiance
Maya sat in the garden under the pale light of Zarathia’s twin moons, her mind a whirlwind of doubt and determination. The conversation with Kai and Arin played on a loop in her head, each word cutting deeper than the last. She had promised herself she wouldn’t run again, but staying felt like fighting an unwinnable war.
Kai’s golden eyes, full of conviction, lingered in her thoughts. “You’re worth everything, Maya,” he had said. But was she truly worth the chaos she had brought into his life?
The sound of rustling leaves snapped her out of her thoughts. Maya tensed, her hand instinctively reaching for the dagger Kai had insisted she carry for protection.
“It’s just me,” a voice called softly.
Maya turned to see Arin stepping out of the shadows, her expression unreadable.
“What do you want?” Maya asked, her tone sharper than intended.
Arin tilted her head, studying her. “You’re a bold one, I’ll give you that. Most wouldn’t speak to me like that.”
“Most aren’t in my position,” Maya retorted.
Arin smirked, but there was no humor in her eyes. “Touché. I came to see if you’ve thought more about what I said.”
Maya frowned. “You mean about leaving Kai?”
Arin nodded, crossing her arms. “Yes. You’re not blind, Maya. You see what’s happening. The Council is restless. The people are whispering. Kai is splitting himself in two trying to protect you and manage the kingdom. It’s unsustainable.”
Maya stood, her hands clenched into fists. “I know all of that. But leaving isn’t the answer.”
Arin’s expression hardened. “Then what is? Do you really think love is enough to fix this? To protect you from the Council’s wrath? From me?”
Maya’s stomach twisted, but she refused to back down. “I don’t need your approval, Arin. And I won’t let you intimidate me.”
Arin chuckled, though the sound was cold. “Brave words, human. But bravery won’t keep you alive in this world.”
\---
Meanwhile, Kai stood before the Council in the grand chamber, their piercing gazes fixed on him.
“You’ve neglected your duties, Prince Kai,” one of the elders said, his voice heavy with disapproval. “Your infatuation with the human has blinded you to the needs of your people.”
Kai’s jaw tightened, but he kept his composure. “Maya is my wife. My loyalty to her doesn’t diminish my dedication to Zarathia.”
Another elder leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. “Your actions say otherwise. The Council grows restless. We’ve given you time to prove your leadership, but our patience is wearing thin.”
Kai stepped forward, his voice firm. “I will not abandon her. Maya is part of this kingdom now, whether you accept it or not. And I’ll do whatever it takes to protect her.”
The room fell silent, the tension thick enough to cut. Finally, the head of the Council spoke, his tone measured but foreboding. “If you insist on keeping her, you must make sacrifices. Your focus must shift to the kingdom. If your attention remains divided, there will be consequences.”
Kai’s golden eyes burned with defiance. “Is that a threat?”
The elder didn’t answer directly, but his gaze was unyielding. “Consider it a warning, Prince Kai. Choose wisely.”
\---
Kai returned to the garden, his mind racing. The Council’s words echoed in his head, each one a reminder of the precarious position he and Maya were in. As he approached, he saw Maya standing face-to-face with Arin, their expressions tense.
“What’s going on here?” he demanded, his voice slicing through the air.
Both women turned to him, their emotions evident—Maya’s frustration and Arin’s smugness.
“Just a friendly chat,” Arin said, her tone dripping with insincerity.
Kai’s gaze shifted to Maya, his eyes searching hers. “Are you okay?”
Maya nodded, though her shoulders remained stiff. “Fine. Just tired of being told I don’t belong here.”
Kai stepped closer, placing a hand on her shoulder. “No one has the right to say that. You’re my wife, and that makes you part of this kingdom.”
Arin snorted softly. “If only it were that simple.”
Kai shot her a sharp look. “Enough, Arin. You’ve made your stance clear. Now leave us.”
For a moment, Arin seemed like she might argue, but then she smiled faintly, a glimmer of something unreadable in her eyes. “As you wish, cousin. But remember—your choices have consequences.”
With that, she disappeared into the shadows, leaving Kai and Maya alone.
\---
Maya let out a shaky breath, her frustration bubbling over. “She’s right, Kai. Your choices have consequences. And I’m one of them.”
Kai frowned, his hands cupping her face. “You’re not a consequence, Maya. You’re my choice. And I’ll fight anyone who tries to take you away from me.”
Tears welled in her eyes, but she shook her head. “Kai, you can’t keep fighting the world for me. It’s tearing you apart.”
He pulled her into his arms, his grip firm yet gentle. “I don’t care how hard it gets. I love you, Maya. And I’ll protect you, no matter what.”
Maya buried her face in his chest, her tears soaking into his shirt. For a moment, she let herself believe his words, let herself feel safe in his arms.
But deep down, she knew the battle was far from over.
\---
The next morning, Kai woke to an empty bed. Panic surged through him as he bolted upright, his eyes scanning the room.
“Maya?” he called, his voice echoing in the silence.
His heart pounded as he searched the palace, his fear growing with every empty room. Finally, he found one of the guards.
“Have you seen my wife?” he demanded, his tone sharp.
The guard hesitated before nodding. “She was seen heading toward the northern forest, my prince.”
Kai’s blood ran cold. The northern forest was dangerous, filled with creatures that even seasoned warriors avoided. Without another word, he raced toward the gates, his mind racing with worst-case scenarios.
\---
Maya stumbled through the dense forest, her determination warring with her fear. She didn’t know where she was going, only that she needed to get away.
But as the trees grew darker and the sounds of creatures grew louder, she began to question her decision.
A low growl made her freeze, her heart pounding in her chest. She turned slowly, her eyes widening as she saw a massive beast emerge from the shadows.
Its eyes glowed red, and its fangs glinted in the faint light. Maya’s hands shook as she reached for her dagger, knowing it was her only chance.
The beast lunged, and she screamed, bracing for impact.
But before it could reach her, a golden blur slammed into it, sending it crashing to the ground.
“Kai,” she breathed, relief flooding her as she saw him standing between her and the beast, his golden eyes blazing with fury.
“What were you thinking?” he snapped, his voice a mix of anger and fear.
“I... I just needed to—”
“Enough,” he interrupted, his tone leaving no room for argument. “We’re going back. Now.”
He scooped her into his arms, his grip unyielding as he carried her back toward the palace.
Maya clung to him, her guilt weighing heavily on her. She had wanted to free him from the burden of protecting her, but in doing so, she had only made things worse.
And as they crossed the threshold of the palace, she knew one thing for certain: there was no escaping Kai’s love—or the challenges they faced together.
