Galaxy On Fire Chapter 16: 16. The vision

The darkness of the outpost was profound, broken only by the soft hum of the Zarathian energy field that surrounded the structure. Kai lay on the narrow bed in one of the chambers, his breathing steady. Maya was fast asleep in the adjoining room, her presence a comforting reminder of the choices he’d made and the stakes he now faced.

But as sleep claimed him, Kai was pulled into a vision that left him restless.

Kai found himself standing in the throne room of Zarathia, a place he hadn’t seen in months. The walls shimmered with an ominous green glow, and the usually bustling chamber was eerily silent.

“Kai.”

He turned sharply, his eyes narrowing as he saw the figure standing at the base of the throne. It was an elder of the Council, his long silver robes flowing unnaturally in a phantom breeze.

“What is this?” Kai demanded, his voice echoing in the empty space.

The elder’s face twisted into a grim smile. “You abandoned your people, Kai. And now, they suffer for it.”

Before Kai could respond, the room shifted. The pristine throne room was suddenly in ruins, the walls crumbling and the floor slick with an unfamiliar, dark liquid. Screams echoed in the distance, and the air was thick with the scent of burning metal.

“No!” Kai shouted, his chest tightening as he looked around.

From the shadows emerged Zarathians—his people—bound in chains and dragged mercilessly by faceless soldiers. The soldiers wore armor that shimmered like obsidian, their movements precise and unyielding.

A child’s cry cut through the chaos, drawing Kai’s attention. His heart sank as he saw a small Zarathian girl being pulled toward a massive, glowing contraption.

“Kai!” the girl screamed, her voice breaking.

He lunged forward, but his feet felt rooted to the ground. “Let her go!”

“She represents your future,” the elder’s voice boomed. “And she is slipping away because of your choices.”

The girl reached out to him, tears streaming down her glowing cheeks. “Please!”

The soldiers pushed her into the machine, and with a blinding flash, she was gone.

Kai fell to his knees, his fists pounding the ground. “This isn’t real! This can’t be real!”

“It is the fate you have brought upon us,” the elder said coldly. “Your actions have consequences, Kai. Return to Zarathia, or watch your people perish.”

As the elder’s words echoed, the scene dissolved, leaving Kai in darkness once more.

Kai jolted awake, his breathing ragged and his skin slick with sweat. The room was dim, and the faint hum of the outpost’s systems was the only sound.

He swung his legs over the side of the bed, his mind racing. The vision had been too vivid to ignore. His people, his home—it was all at risk.

“Kai?”

He turned to see Maya standing in the doorway, her green-tinged skin glowing faintly in the dark. Her hair was tousled from sleep, and concern was etched across her face.

“You’re shaking,” she said, stepping closer.

Kai ran a hand through his hair, trying to steady his thoughts. “It’s nothing. Just a bad dream.”

Maya crossed her arms. “You’re a terrible liar.”

He sighed, gesturing for her to sit. She settled beside him, her gaze unwavering.

“It wasn’t just a dream,” Kai admitted. “It was a vision. Zarathians sometimes have them when the stakes are… critical.”

“What did you see?”

Kai hesitated, the weight of the vision pressing heavily on his chest. “My people are in danger. The Council—they’re losing control. And if I don’t go back, everything I’ve fought for could be destroyed.”

Maya’s brows furrowed. “So, you’re saying we have to go back to Zarathia? After everything we’ve done to stay off their radar?”

“I don’t have a choice,” Kai said, his voice tight. “If I don’t return, they’ll crush the resistance and punish the innocents. I can’t let that happen.”

Maya leaned back, her expression conflicted. “And what about me? If we go back, the Council will target me. You know that.”

Kai reached for her hand, his touch firm but gentle. “I won’t let them hurt you, Maya. You have my word.”

She held his gaze, searching for any hint of doubt. “You’re risking everything for this, Kai. Are you sure it’s the right move?”

He nodded, his resolve clear. “If I don’t act now, there won’t be anything left to fight for.”

Maya exhaled slowly, her fingers tightening around his. “Then I’m with you. Whatever happens, we face it together.”

The next morning, the outpost was a hive of quiet activity as Kai prepared for their departure. He contacted the resistance leader, informing her of his vision and his decision to return.

“This changes everything,” the leader said, her voice tinged with urgency. “If the Council senses weakness, they’ll exploit it. You’ll need to tread carefully.”

“I know,” Kai replied. “But I can’t abandon my people.”

After ending the call, Kai found Maya packing a small bag with supplies.

“Are you ready for this?” he asked, his tone softer than before.

She glanced at him, a wry smile on her lips. “Not even a little. But when has that ever stopped me?”

Kai chuckled, despite the tension. “You never cease to amaze me.”

“Flattery won’t make this any less dangerous,” she teased.

As they stepped outside, the sleek craft from the resistance awaited them. The leader stood by, her expression unreadable.

“This isn’t just about you anymore, Prince,” she said. “If you fail, the resistance fails. Don’t forget that.”

“I won’t,” Kai assured her.

The leader nodded, stepping aside to let them board.

As the craft soared through Zarathia’s atmosphere, Kai couldn’t shake the weight of the vision. Beside him, Maya stared out the window, her thoughts a mystery.

“Kai,” she said suddenly, breaking the silence.

He turned to her, his expression questioning.

“Whatever happens,” she began, her voice steady, “I don’t regret any of this. Meeting you, fighting with you—it’s made me stronger than I ever thought I could be.”

Kai reached for her hand, his heart swelling with gratitude and affection. “And I don’t regret a single moment with you. You’ve shown me what it truly means to fight for something worth protecting.”

Their fingers intertwined as the craft descended toward the glowing spires of Zarathia’s capital.

The future was uncertain, and the path ahead was fraught with danger. But together, they were ready to face whatever challenges lay in their way.
