Galaxy On Fire Chapter 29: 29. A line in the sand
Kai's golden eyes blazed as he squared off with Arin in the dimly lit hallway outside the basement. His hand gripped his blade tightly, ready for whatever she planned to throw at him. Behind him, Maya clung to his arm, still weak from days in captivity but determined to stand with him.
"Arin," Kai growled, his voice low and threatening. "Release your guards. If you care even a little about the kingdom, you’ll step aside."
Arin crossed her arms, her expression unreadable. "You speak of the kingdom, Kai, but you’ve forgotten your duty. How long will you let this human distract you from the responsibilities you were born to bear?"
Kai took a step forward, his blade glinting in the torchlight. "This isn’t about duty. It’s about you, Arin. You’ve been scheming behind my back, jeopardizing not only Maya’s life but also the stability of our world. If you truly cared about the kingdom, you wouldn’t be tearing it apart for your own gain."
Arin’s composure faltered for a moment, but she quickly masked it with a smirk. "You’re blinded by your infatuation, Kai. Can’t you see that this human doesn’t belong here? The Council agrees with me. Maya is a liability—a weakness you can’t afford."
Maya stepped out from behind Kai, her voice trembling but resolute. "I may not be from your world, but I’ve done nothing to harm it. All I want is to be with Kai. Why is that such a threat to you?"
Arin’s smirk turned into a sneer. "Because you’ve made him weak! Kai was once a leader with focus and strength. Now he’s a lovesick fool, willing to defy the Council and risk war for someone who doesn’t even understand our customs!"
Kai’s patience snapped. He surged forward, the tip of his blade hovering inches from Arin’s throat. The guards flanking her tensed but didn’t move, uncertain whether to intervene.
"This is your final warning," Kai said, his voice icy. "Stand down, or I will make you regret it."
Arin’s confidence wavered, but her defiance didn’t falter. "You wouldn’t harm me, cousin. Despite everything, you still believe in family, don’t you?"
Kai hesitated for a fraction of a second, and Arin seized the opportunity. With a swift motion, she reached into the folds of her robe and produced a small, glowing device.
"You always were too soft, Kai," she said, pressing the device’s center.
A pulse of energy radiated from the device, knocking Kai backward. He hit the ground hard, his blade skittering out of reach.
"Kai!" Maya screamed, rushing to his side.
The guards stepped forward, but Arin raised a hand to stop them. "Hold your positions. I want them alive—for now."
Kai struggled to his feet, his body still reeling from the energy pulse. Maya helped steady him, her eyes blazing with determination.
"This isn’t over, Arin," Kai said, his voice rough but steady.
Arin chuckled. "Oh, but it is. You’ve made your choice, Kai, and now you’ll face the consequences. Guards, escort them to the throne room. The Council will decide their fate."
\---
The walk to the throne room was agonizing. Kai and Maya were surrounded by guards, their every move monitored. Maya’s heart pounded as she glanced at Kai, whose face was a mixture of anger and regret.
"I’m sorry, Maya," he whispered. "This is my fault. I should have seen this coming."
Maya shook her head. "Don’t blame yourself, Kai. Arin is the one doing this, not you."
Kai clenched his fists. "I won’t let her win. No matter what it takes, I’ll protect you."
\---
The throne room was eerily silent as they entered. The Council members sat in a semi-circle, their expressions grim. At the center of the room stood the High Chancellor, his piercing eyes fixed on Kai.
"Kai," the Chancellor began, his voice cold and authoritative. "You have defied the Council’s orders, endangered the stability of the kingdom, and allowed your emotions to cloud your judgment. Do you have anything to say for yourself?"
Kai stepped forward, his chin held high. "I’ve done nothing but fight for what I believe is right. Maya is not a threat to this kingdom. If anything, she’s shown strength and resilience that many of us could learn from. The real threat lies within—Arin and her schemes."
Arin stepped forward, her expression feigning innocence. "I’ve done nothing but act in the kingdom’s best interest. It’s Kai who has allowed his personal feelings to endanger us all."
The Chancellor raised a hand, silencing them both. "This infighting must stop. The kingdom cannot afford division, especially not now. Kai, your actions have put us all at risk. The Council demands a solution, and it demands it now."
Kai looked to Maya, his heart sinking. He knew what the Council wanted—what they always wanted: control.
"What is your solution, Chancellor?" Kai asked, his voice steady despite the turmoil inside him.
The Chancellor’s gaze hardened. "You will sever your ties with Maya. Send her back to her world or exile her to the outer reaches of the galaxy. Either way, she cannot remain here."
Maya’s breath caught in her throat. "You can’t do this," she whispered, her voice shaking.
Kai turned to the Council, his expression resolute. "No. I won’t abandon her. She is my wife, my queen. If you cannot accept that, then you’ll have to strip me of my title."
A murmur rippled through the Council members, their shock evident.
The Chancellor leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. "You would give up your throne for her?"
Kai nodded without hesitation. "I would."
Maya’s eyes filled with tears. "Kai..."
Before the Chancellor could respond, a loud crash echoed through the throne room. All heads turned to see the heavy doors swing open, revealing a small group of rebels armed with makeshift weapons.
"Down with the Council!" one of them shouted. "Long live King Kai!"
Chaos erupted as the rebels surged forward, clashing with the guards. Kai instinctively grabbed Maya, shielding her as the room descended into chaos.
Arin watched the scene unfold, her face a mixture of shock and fury. "This is your doing, Kai!" she shouted over the noise. "You’ve brought this rebellion upon us!"
Kai ignored her, focusing on getting Maya to safety.
"We have to get out of here," he said, his voice urgent.
"But the rebels—" Maya began, but Kai cut her off.
"They’re fighting for us, but we can’t stay here. Not like this."
As they fled the throne room, Maya couldn’t help but glance back, her heart heavy with the weight of what they were leaving behind.
