Galaxy On Fire Chapter 26: 26. The storm brews
Maya paced their chamber, her heart racing. The confrontation with Arin earlier that day still played in her mind like a loop she couldn’t stop. Kai stood near the balcony, his gaze distant, his jaw set as if he were wrestling with a storm of his own.
“You’re too quiet,” Maya finally said, her voice breaking the tense silence. “What’s going on in your head?”
Kai turned, his golden eyes meeting hers. “I’m deciding how to deal with Arin.”
Maya stopped pacing, crossing her arms. “Kai, she’s not going to stop, no matter what you do. She’s convinced I’m a threat, and honestly... I think she wants more than your approval. She wants power.”
Kai nodded slowly. “I know. But I can’t act recklessly. If I make a move without the Council’s backing, it could destabilize the kingdom.”
Maya bit her lip, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. “So what, you’ll just let her keep playing these games? She’s dangerous, Kai. You saw what she did to the guards just to threaten me.”
His voice dropped, sharp and unyielding. “I would never let her hurt you.”
“Words aren’t enough!” Maya’s frustration boiled over, her voice rising. “I can’t keep living like this—watching my back, wondering when she’ll strike next.”
Kai crossed the room in two strides, gripping her shoulders gently but firmly. “I’m not asking you to live in fear. I’m asking you to trust me. Do you?”
She searched his face, the weight of his words pressing against her chest. Finally, she whispered, “I do. But I need to feel safe, Kai.”
He cupped her face, his thumb brushing her cheek. “You will. I swear it. You’re my wife, my queen. No one touches you. Not even Arin.”
A knock on the door broke their moment. Kai frowned, stepping back. “Enter.”
A young guard stepped in, his face pale. “Your Highness, the Council has called an emergency meeting. They request your immediate presence.”
Kai’s expression darkened. “What’s it about?”
“They didn’t specify, my lord,” the guard replied, bowing slightly. “But they mentioned Lady Arin.”
Maya’s stomach twisted. “This can’t be good.”
Kai turned back to her. “Stay here. Don’t leave the chambers, no matter what you hear.”
“But—”
He silenced her with a look. “Promise me, Maya.”
She sighed, nodding. “Fine. Just be careful.”

The Council chamber was a cavernous room, its high ceilings adorned with intricate carvings of past rulers. The air was heavy with tension as Kai entered. The Council members, a mix of elders and younger advisors, whispered among themselves until his presence silenced them.
Arin stood at the center of the room, her posture regal, her expression unreadable. Kai’s anger simmered beneath his composed facade.
“Kai,” one of the elders began, his voice grave. “We have summoned you to address concerns raised by Lady Arin.”
Kai’s eyes narrowed as he turned to his cousin. “Concerns?”
Arin stepped forward, her tone smooth and practiced. “Yes, dear cousin. I have brought to the Council’s attention the growing unrest among the people. They question your ability to lead with clarity, given your... preoccupation with a human.”
Murmurs rippled through the chamber. Kai’s hands clenched into fists. “Preoccupation? Maya is my wife and queen. My focus on her is my duty.”
Arin tilted her head, her lips curving into a faint smile. “And yet, the kingdom suffers. The people need a strong leader, one who puts their needs above personal attachments.”
Kai’s voice cut through the murmurs like a blade. “If you think for a second that my devotion to Maya compromises my leadership, then you know nothing of me.”
An elder raised his hand, silencing the room. “Prince Kai, the Council acknowledges your dedication to your wife. However, Lady Arin’s claims have stirred doubts. The people need reassurance. A united front.”
Kai’s jaw tightened. “Reassurance? The people have my loyalty. What they don’t need is manipulation and deceit from those who seek to undermine me.”
Arin’s smile faded, her eyes narrowing. “Manipulation? Careful with your words, cousin.”
Kai stepped closer, his voice a low growl. “Careful is the only reason you’re still standing here.”
The elder intervened again. “Enough. This infighting will destroy the kingdom faster than any external threat. Kai, we need a solution.”
Kai’s gaze swept over the room. “The solution is simple. Maya is the queen. She has earned her place, and I will not tolerate anyone, not even family, challenging that.”
Arin’s laugh was sharp and cutting. “Earned her place? By what merit? Falling into your arms and whispering sweet nothings? Tell me, cousin, what has she truly done for this kingdom?”
Kai’s restraint snapped. “More than you ever will.”
The room fell silent, the weight of his words hanging in the air. Arin’s face turned cold, her facade slipping.
“Let the record show,” Kai continued, addressing the Council, “that anyone who threatens the queen threatens the crown. And I will act accordingly.”

Back in their chambers, Maya paced anxiously. She jumped when the door finally opened, revealing Kai. His expression was stormy, his steps heavy as he entered.
“What happened?” she asked, rushing to his side.
Kai sank into a chair, rubbing his temples. “Arin is pushing harder than ever. She’s turned some of the Council against me. They think I’m distracted because of you.”
Maya sat beside him, her heart sinking. “What can we do?”
Kai looked at her, his eyes softening. “We stand together. No matter what they throw at us.”
Maya hesitated before speaking. “Kai, are you sure about this? About me? I don’t want to be the reason you lose everything.”
He took her hand, his grip firm and reassuring. “You’re not the reason I’m fighting, Maya. You’re the reason I’ll win.”
She managed a small smile, but her unease remained. “I don’t trust her, Kai. Arin. She’s not going to stop.”
“I know,” Kai said, his voice dark. “But neither will I.”

Later that night, as Maya tried to sleep, her mind wouldn’t stop racing. The tension in the palace was palpable, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was coming. Something big.
She turned to Kai, who lay beside her, his breathing steady but his brow furrowed even in sleep. Gently, she reached out, brushing her fingers against his cheek.
“I won’t let them take you from me,” she whispered, her resolve hardening. “No matter what it takes.”
Outside the chamber, shadows moved in the corridors, unseen and silent. The storm brewing within the palace was far from over, and Maya knew they were running out of time.
