Galaxy On Fire Chapter 13: 13. The binding decision
The night stretched on, heavy with unspoken words and uneasy silence. Maya sat near the edge of the small fire Kai had built, her knees drawn to her chest. Her green-tinged skin glimmered faintly under the firelight, a constant reminder of how much her body had changed. Kai watched her from a distance, his arms crossed over his chest, his face unreadable.
The astrologer’s words echoed in both their minds: The bonding ceremony must take place soon if she is to survive.
Finally, Kai broke the silence, his voice low but steady. “Maya, we don’t have much time. We have to decide.”
Maya glanced at him, her expression conflicted. “You keep saying ‘we,’ but this is my body, Kai. My life. I’m the one who has to carry the weight of this decision.”
“I know,” Kai said, stepping closer. His tone softened. “But you’re not alone in this. I’m here, and I’m not leaving you to face this by yourself.”
Her lips pressed into a thin line. “It’s just… it’s all too much. Yesterday, I was a human struggling to survive in your world. Now, I’m halfway to becoming an alien, and I’m being told I need to marry you just to stay alive. How do I even process that?”
Kai knelt in front of her, the firelight casting shadows across his sharp features. “I wish I could take this burden from you. But Maya, this isn’t just about the Council’s threats or their laws. It’s about saving your life.”
Maya looked away, blinking back the tears that threatened to fall. She wanted to lash out, to scream at the injustice of it all. But deep down, she knew Kai was right. The transformation was tearing her apart, and if they didn’t act soon, there might not be a decision left to make.
Kai reached out and gently touched her arm. “Do you trust me?” he asked softly.
Her gaze snapped back to him, searching his eyes. The sincerity she saw there was almost too much to bear. “I do,” she whispered.
“Then let me help you,” he said. “Let’s do this together.”

The next morning, they set out for the sacred grounds where the bonding ceremony would take place. The astrologer had given them directions, warning them of the challenges they might face along the way.
“It’s not just a physical journey,” the astrologer had said. “The path to the sacred grounds tests the strength of your bond. Only those truly committed to one another can complete it.”
Maya couldn’t help but feel a pang of doubt. Truly committed? She wasn’t even sure what she felt for Kai. Yes, he had saved her life more times than she could count, and yes, there was something about him that made her heart race. But was that enough to bind their lives together forever?
Kai seemed to sense her hesitation as they walked. “You don’t have to feel pressured,” he said, his voice calm. “If at any point you want to stop, just say the word.”
Maya gave him a wry smile. “That’s easy for you to say. You’re not the one who might die if we don’t go through with this.”
Kai chuckled, though there was little humor in it. “Fair point.”
\---
The first challenge came unexpectedly. As they crossed a dense forest, a thick mist descended around them, obscuring their vision. Maya clung to Kai’s arm, her pulse quickening.
“What’s happening?” she whispered.
“It’s the path testing us,” Kai replied, his voice steady despite the growing tension.
Out of the mist emerged shadowy figures, their shapes shifting and twisting. Maya gasped as one of them took on the form of her younger brother, the one she had lost years ago.
“Liam?” she breathed, stepping forward instinctively.
Kai grabbed her wrist. “It’s not real,” he warned.
But the figure looked so real. “Maya,” it said, its voice trembling with pain. “Why did you leave me?”
Tears streamed down Maya’s face as she struggled to pull away from Kai. “I didn’t leave you! I couldn’t save you!”
The figure moved closer, its eyes filled with sorrow. “Come with me, Maya. We can be together again.”
Kai tightened his grip on her. “Maya, listen to me. It’s trying to lure you away. You can’t go with it!”
Maya turned to Kai, her face contorted with anguish. “You don’t understand. I lost him. If there’s even a chance—”
“There isn’t,” Kai interrupted firmly. “It’s a trick. This is how the path tests us. You have to let him go.”
Maya hesitated, her heart aching. But as she looked back at the figure, she saw its form flicker and shift, revealing the dark, menacing energy beneath. She swallowed hard and stepped back, gripping Kai’s hand tightly.
The mist dissipated, and the shadowy figures vanished. Maya collapsed against Kai, her breathing ragged.
“You did it,” Kai said softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “You faced it and won.”
Maya nodded, though her chest still felt heavy. “It wasn’t easy,” she admitted.
“It never is,” Kai replied.

The second challenge was no less harrowing. As they reached a rocky canyon, the ground beneath them began to tremble. Cracks appeared, and lava bubbled up, creating a treacherous path.
“We have to cross,” Kai said, assessing the situation.
Maya stared at the glowing fissures in disbelief. “You’re kidding, right?”
Kai gave her a small smile. “I wish I was.”
They began their descent carefully, Kai leading the way and guiding Maya around the most unstable sections. But midway through, the ground gave way beneath Maya’s feet.
She let out a startled cry as she fell, her hands scrabbling for a hold. Kai reacted instantly, grabbing her arm and pulling her back onto solid ground.
“Are you okay?” he asked, his voice laced with concern.
Maya nodded, though her heart was pounding. “That was way too close.”
Kai grinned, trying to lighten the mood. “Guess you’ll have to marry me now. I’ve saved your life enough times to earn it.”
Maya rolled her eyes, though a small smile tugged at her lips. “Don’t push your luck, prince.”

By the time they reached the sacred grounds, both of them were exhausted. A massive stone altar stood before them, surrounded by glowing orbs of light.
“This is it,” Kai said, his voice filled with awe.
Maya stared at the altar, her nerves returning. “So what happens now?”
Kai turned to her, his expression serious. “Now, we make our choice.”
Maya took a deep breath, her mind racing. She still had doubts, but one thing was clear—Kai had been there for her through everything. If she had to trust anyone with her life, it was him.
“I’m ready,” she said finally.
Kai nodded, his gaze steady. “Then let’s do this.”
As they approached the altar, the glowing orbs began to swirl around them, their light growing brighter. Maya’s heart pounded as she reached for Kai’s hand, her fingers trembling.
Whatever happened next, there was no turning back.
