Galaxy On Fire Chapter 9: 9. Rest at the edge
Kai’s breath came in ragged gasps as he staggered through the dim, maze-like tunnels beneath the Council’s facility. Maya’s unconscious form felt heavier with every step, but he refused to let her go. Her head rested against his chest, her skin pale and slick with sweat. He could feel the faint, uneven thrum of her heartbeat, a fragile rhythm that filled him with equal parts relief and dread.
The explosions and alarms above them had faded, replaced by the distant hum of machinery. The underground network stretched endlessly in all directions, with no clear way out. His only goal now was to find a safe place to hide until Maya woke up—or until he figured out their next move.
Ahead, a faint light flickered, revealing a small junction where the tunnels converged. Kai stumbled into the space, his legs threatening to give out. A metallic grate embedded in the floor made a makeshift resting place, and Kai gently lowered Maya onto it, brushing damp strands of hair away from her face.
“Maya,” he whispered, his voice thick with worry. “You have to wake up. Please.”
She didn’t stir. Her breathing was shallow, her chest rising and falling at an irregular pace. Kai clenched his fists, guilt and fury warring within him.
“This is all my fault,” he muttered, sitting back against the cool wall. “I brought you here. I thought I could protect you.”
His voice broke, and he slammed his fist into the wall, the sharp pain grounding him momentarily. “I should’ve fought harder. I should’ve—”
“Stop blaming yourself.”
The soft, hoarse words froze him. Kai’s head snapped toward Maya, whose eyes were fluttering open.
“Maya!” he said, his heart leaping. He leaned closer, his hands hovering over her as if afraid she might disappear.
She offered a weak smile, her voice barely above a whisper. “You’re loud, you know that?”
Kai let out a shaky laugh, a mix of relief and disbelief. “You scared me half to death.”
“Sorry,” she murmured, attempting to sit up. A sharp gasp escaped her as pain rippled through her body.
“Don’t move,” Kai said quickly, pressing a gentle hand to her shoulder. “You’re still weak. Just rest.”
She sank back down, her gaze wandering to the dim surroundings. “Where are we?”
“Somewhere below the Council’s facility,” Kai replied. “I found this junction and thought it was safe enough for now. We’ll stay here until you’re stronger.”
Maya’s brow furrowed as she tried to recall the events leading up to their escape. “The lab… Veyra… They were…”
“They were trying to change you,” Kai finished grimly. “I stopped the process, but…” He hesitated, his jaw tightening. “I don’t know if it was too late.”
Her fingers instinctively touched her arms, where faint traces of glowing blue veins remained. “I feel… strange,” she admitted.
Kai reached for her hand, his touch steady and reassuring. “Whatever they did, we’ll figure it out. Together.”
Maya met his gaze, her eyes searching his for answers. “Why are you doing all this for me, Kai? I’m just… a human. I’m nothing special.”
His lips parted as if to speak, but he hesitated. The truth, raw and undeniable, was on the tip of his tongue.
“Because you are special,” he said finally, his voice soft but resolute. “You’re brave, stubborn, and so much stronger than you think. You make me see the world differently. And…”
He trailed off, his cheeks darkening slightly. Maya raised an eyebrow despite her exhaustion, a ghost of her usual sass returning.
“And?” she prompted, her voice teasing.
Kai let out a breathless laugh, shaking his head. “And… you’ve become the most important person in my life. I can’t lose you.”
Maya’s heart fluttered, a warmth spreading through her despite the cold metal beneath her. “You’re pretty decent for an alien prince,” she said, a small smile tugging at her lips.
“Decent?” Kai scoffed, feigning offense. “I’ve risked my life for you, fought off guards, and carried you halfway across the galaxy, and all I get is decent?”
Maya chuckled weakly, the sound like music to Kai’s ears. “Fine. You’re more than decent. Happy now?”
“Ecstatic,” he said with a grin.
For a moment, the tension between them dissolved, replaced by a fragile sense of normalcy. But it didn’t last. A faint rumble echoed through the tunnels, reminding them of the danger still lurking.
Kai’s expression grew serious again. “We can’t stay here for long. They’ll be searching for us.”
Maya nodded, her humor fading. “What’s the plan?”
Kai hesitated, running a hand through his hair. “First, we need to get out of this tunnel network. There’s a safe house not far from here—an old outpost I used to use as a kid. If we can make it there, we’ll have a chance to regroup.”
Maya tried to sit up again, this time with Kai’s help. Her muscles ached, but her determination outweighed the pain. “Let’s do it,” she said, her voice firm.
Kai smiled despite himself. “That’s the Maya I know.”
He helped her to her feet, letting her lean on him for support. As they began to move, Maya glanced up at him, her eyes filled with curiosity.
“Kai?”
“Yeah?”
“If we make it through all this,” she said, her voice thoughtful, “what happens next?”
Kai didn’t answer right away. He looked down at her, his expression a mix of hope and uncertainty. “I don’t know,” he admitted. “But whatever it is, we’ll face it together.”
\---
Their journey through the tunnels was slow and arduous. Maya’s steps were unsteady, and Kai kept a firm arm around her to keep her from collapsing.
At one point, she stumbled, and Kai caught her, pulling her close. “Easy,” he said, his voice gentle.
Maya looked up at him, her cheeks flushing. “Thanks,” she muttered.
“Anytime,” he replied with a smirk. “You’re stuck with me, remember?”
She rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide the small smile that crept onto her face.
As they continued, Maya’s mind raced with questions about what lay ahead. The transformation process had been interrupted, but the effects lingered. She didn’t know what changes were happening inside her, and the uncertainty gnawed at her.
“Kai,” she said quietly, breaking the silence.
“Yeah?”
“What if… what if I’m not the same anymore?”
Kai stopped walking and turned to face her, his hands resting on her shoulders. “Listen to me, Maya. No matter what happens, no matter what they tried to do to you, you’re still you. You’re still the woman who challenged me, who refused to back down even when the odds were against her. That won’t change.”
Maya swallowed hard, his words giving her a glimmer of hope. “You really believe that?”
“I do,” he said, his gaze unwavering.
She nodded, drawing strength from his conviction. “Okay. Let’s keep moving.”
As they pressed on, the faint sound of pursuit echoed in the distance, a reminder that their time was running out. But for now, they had each other, and that was enough to keep them going.
