Galaxy On Fire Chapter 31: 31. Pain
The infirmary was quieter now, the hum of machinery and the soft rustle of the healers’ robes the only sounds. Maya rested in the massive bed draped with golden sheets, her breathing even but shallow. The faint green hue on her skin shimmered under the dim lights, reminding Kai of the transformation she was undergoing. Despite the calm exterior of the room, his mind was a battlefield of worry and anger.
As he sat beside her, holding her hand, Maya stirred slightly, her lips parting as she tried to speak.
"Kai," she murmured weakly, her voice barely audible.
Kai leaned closer, his heart aching at her fragile state. "I'm here," he said softly, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. "How are you feeling?"
Maya blinked, her eyes filled with confusion and unease. "Strange," she admitted. "My body feels… foreign. What’s happening to me?"
Kai hesitated, not wanting to alarm her. "The shard that injured you... it’s altered something within you. The healers say it’s accelerating your transformation."
Her eyes widened slightly, panic creeping into her expression. "Transformation? Into what?"
Kai swallowed hard. "Into one of us."
Maya’s breath hitched, her hand trembling in his grasp. "No… this can’t be happening."
“I won’t let anything happen to you,” he promised, his voice firm despite the turmoil inside him. “We’ll figure this out. Together.”
Before Maya could respond, the door to the infirmary burst open, and one of Kai’s advisors entered, his face pale and drawn.
"Your Highness," the man said urgently, bowing low. "The Council has summoned you immediately. They’ve called an emergency meeting."
Kai’s jaw tightened. “On what grounds?”
The advisor hesitated. “It concerns Lady Arin… and your decision to harbor Maya.”
Kai’s fists clenched, but he forced himself to remain calm. “Tell them I’ll be there shortly.”
The advisor nodded and left, leaving the tension in the room almost palpable.
“Kai,” Maya whispered, her voice laced with fear. “What’s going on? Why is this happening now?”
Kai turned back to her, his expression softening. “It’s the Council. They’ve never approved of us being together. Arin’s betrayal has given them an excuse to challenge me.”
Maya frowned, her strength slowly returning as her determination grew. “Then let me face them with you. I won’t let them tear us apart.”
Kai shook his head. “You need to rest. They’ll use any sign of weakness against us. Stay here and recover. I’ll handle the Council.”
Reluctantly, Maya nodded, though her gaze remained worried.

The Council chamber was a stark contrast to the quiet of the infirmary. It buzzed with tension as the elders debated amongst themselves, their voices a mix of anger and concern. Kai strode in, his presence commanding immediate attention.
“Your Highness,” one of the elder members began, his tone accusatory. “You’ve jeopardized the kingdom by prioritizing a human over your duties. Lady Arin’s actions, while regrettable, have exposed the fractures in your rule.”
Kai’s golden eyes narrowed. “Arin’s actions were treasonous. She endangered Maya’s life and betrayed her own bloodline. If anyone has jeopardized the kingdom, it’s her.”
Another elder, a woman with sharp features, leaned forward. “And yet, this human remains here, her very presence causing unrest. You must choose, Kai. The kingdom or… her.”
Kai’s voice was icy as he replied, “Maya is not just a human. She’s my wife and the future queen of this realm. Anyone who threatens her threatens me and the throne.”
The room erupted into murmurs, the elders exchanging uneasy glances.
“And what of her transformation?” another elder pressed. “Her condition is unstable. She could become a danger to us all.”
Kai stepped forward, his stance unwavering. “Her transformation is under control. I’ve ensured she is being monitored by the best healers in the realm. She’s no threat—unless you make her one.”
The sharp-featured woman sneered. “You’re blinded by emotion, Kai. Your love for her clouds your judgment. If you cannot prioritize the kingdom, we will be forced to take matters into our own hands.”
Kai’s gaze hardened. “That would be a grave mistake.”
Before the debate could escalate further, the chamber doors swung open, and to everyone’s surprise, Maya stepped in. She was still weak, her steps unsteady, but her resolve was evident in her determined expression.
The elders looked at her with a mix of disdain and intrigue as she approached Kai’s side.
“Maya,” Kai hissed under his breath. “You shouldn’t be here.”
She gave him a small, reassuring smile. “I couldn’t just sit and wait. This is about both of us.”
Turning to the Council, she spoke, her voice steady despite the weight of their stares. “I understand your concerns. I know I’m not what you expected, and my presence here has caused disruption. But I’m not your enemy. All I want is to stand by Kai’s side and prove that we can overcome these challenges together.”
Her words hung in the air, the sincerity in her tone silencing the room.
An elder finally spoke, his voice begrudgingly respectful. “You are brave, I’ll give you that. But bravery alone will not secure the kingdom’s future.”
“I know,” Maya replied. “But love and unity might.”
The elders exchanged glances, their expressions softening ever so slightly.
Kai placed a protective hand on Maya’s shoulder. “I will not abandon her,” he said firmly. “And I will not let this kingdom be torn apart by fear and prejudice. We must move forward, not backward.”
After a long pause, the sharp-featured woman sighed. “Very well, Your Highness. But know this: the Council will be watching. If her presence leads to further unrest, we will intervene.”
Kai inclined his head. “Understood.”

As they left the chamber, Kai turned to Maya, his expression a mix of gratitude and frustration.
“You shouldn’t have done that,” he said, though his tone was more gentle than scolding.
Maya smiled faintly. “I couldn’t let you face them alone. We’re in this together, remember?”
Kai shook his head, a small smile tugging at his lips despite himself. “You’re impossible.”
“And you love me for it,” she teased, leaning against him for support.
He wrapped an arm around her, his heart swelling with pride and affection. “More than you’ll ever know.”
But even as they walked back to the infirmary, a shadow of unease lingered in Kai’s mind. The Council’s words had struck a chord, and he knew their fight was far from over.
In the distance, hidden from view, Arin watched them with narrowed eyes. Her plans had been thwarted for now, but she wasn’t finished. If she couldn’t destroy Maya directly, she would find another way—one that would leave Kai no choice but to turn to her.
“Enjoy your moment of victory,” she muttered under her breath. “It won’t last.”
