Galaxy On Fire Chapter 32: 32. Brewing Storm
The corridors of the castle buzzed with activity as Kai escorted Maya back to their chambers. He couldn’t help but steal glances at her, his worry overshadowed by pride at how she had stood up to the Council. However, the shadows of their disapproval still loomed over his thoughts.
Maya leaned against him, clearly exhausted but determined. “Kai,” she said softly, her voice barely audible, “do you think they’ll ever truly accept me?”
Kai stopped, turning to face her. His golden eyes softened as he placed his hands on her shoulders. “I don’t know,” he admitted, “but I promise you, their acceptance doesn’t matter. I’ll protect you, no matter what.”
Her lips curved into a faint smile. “You always say that.”
“And I’ll always mean it,” he replied firmly, guiding her forward.
As they reached their chambers, a servant approached, bowing deeply. “Your Highness, Lady Arin has requested an audience with you in the royal garden.”
Kai’s jaw tightened, and Maya’s grip on his arm unconsciously tightened. “Tell her I’m occupied,” he said curtly.
The servant hesitated. “She said it’s urgent, Your Highness. It concerns the kingdom.”
Kai exhaled sharply, his frustration evident. “Very well. Tell her I’ll be there shortly.”
As the servant departed, Maya looked up at him, concern flickering in her eyes. “Do you trust her?”
“Not even a little,” Kai replied bluntly. “But I need to know what she’s up to.”
Maya nodded, though unease settled in her chest. “Be careful.”
Kai cupped her cheek, his touch warm and reassuring. “Always.”

The royal garden was bathed in the soft glow of twilight, the air fragrant with alien blooms that shimmered under the fading light. Arin stood near a fountain, her posture poised but her expression betraying a hint of tension.
“You wanted to see me?” Kai said as he approached, his tone cold.
Arin turned, her emerald eyes narrowing slightly. “We need to talk.”
“About?”
She took a step closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “The Council. They’re not satisfied with your defense of the human. They’re plotting something, Kai.”
Kai crossed his arms, his expression unreadable. “And you’re telling me this out of the goodness of your heart?”
Arin’s lips curled into a faint smirk. “I may disagree with your choices, but I’m still loyal to the kingdom. If the Council undermines you, it weakens us all.”
“What are they planning?”
“They’re considering invoking the ancient rite of succession,” she said, her tone grave.
Kai’s eyes widened slightly. “They wouldn’t dare.”
“Oh, they would,” Arin replied. “If they believe you’re unfit to rule, they’ll challenge your right to the throne. And trust me, they’ll use Maya as their weapon.”
Kai clenched his fists, his anger simmering just beneath the surface. “Do they think I’ll just step aside?”
“They’re counting on your emotions to cloud your judgment,” Arin said, stepping even closer. “But there’s a way to stop this.”
Kai arched an eyebrow. “And I suppose you have a solution?”
Arin’s gaze locked with his, her expression earnest. “Marry me.”
The words hung in the air like a thunderclap. Kai stared at her, disbelief and anger flashing across his face.
“Are you out of your mind?” he demanded.
“Hear me out,” Arin said quickly. “If you marry me, it will show the Council you’re prioritizing the kingdom. Maya doesn’t have to know. It would be a political arrangement, nothing more.”
Kai’s laugh was bitter. “You expect me to betray her trust like that? To reduce her to some hidden secret while I play your pawn?”
“This isn’t about betrayal,” Arin argued. “It’s about survival. For both of you.”
Kai shook his head, his voice icy. “If you think I’d ever choose you over her, you don’t know me at all.”
Arin’s expression darkened, her carefully crafted facade cracking. “You’re being foolish, Kai. Your obsession with her will be your downfall.”
“Get out of my sight,” he growled. “And don’t ever try to manipulate me again.”
Arin opened her mouth to retort but stopped herself. Her eyes burned with barely contained fury as she stormed away, her mind already calculating her next move.

Back in their chambers, Maya paced restlessly, her unease growing with each passing moment. When the door finally opened and Kai stepped in, she immediately rushed to him.
“What happened?” she asked, searching his face for answers.
Kai hesitated, debating whether to tell her the truth. But as her green-tinged hand reached for his, he knew he couldn’t hide anything from her.
“Arin tried to convince me to marry her,” he admitted, his voice low.
Maya froze, her eyes widening in shock. “What?”
“It’s a political scheme,” Kai said quickly. “She thinks it’ll appease the Council and secure my position as king. But I refused. You’re the only one I’ll ever choose, Maya.”
Maya exhaled shakily, her emotions a whirlwind of relief and anger. “And what if she doesn’t take no for an answer?”
Kai’s jaw tightened. “Let her try. I’ll deal with her if she does.”
Maya nodded, though the seed of doubt had already been planted. She knew Arin wouldn’t give up so easily, and that thought terrified her.
\---
That night, as Maya lay in bed beside Kai, her sleep was restless. Her dreams were a chaotic mix of memories and fears, Arin’s face appearing again and again, her voice whispering threats.
When she woke, it was still dark. The room was quiet, Kai’s steady breathing beside her a small comfort. But her heart was heavy, the weight of their situation pressing down on her.
Slipping out of bed, she wrapped a shawl around her shoulders and stepped out onto the balcony. The cool night air helped clear her mind, but her thoughts remained tangled.
“Can’t sleep?”
Maya turned to see Kai standing in the doorway, his golden eyes glowing softly in the dim light.
“No,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “Everything feels… overwhelming.”
Kai walked over to her, wrapping his arms around her from behind. “We’ll get through this,” he said, his voice steady and reassuring.
Maya leaned into his embrace, her hands resting on his. “I’m scared, Kai. Not just of Arin, but of everything. The Council, this transformation… what if I’m not strong enough?”
Kai turned her to face him, his hands cupping her face. “You’re stronger than you think, Maya. You’ve already faced so much and come out fighting. I believe in you.”
She looked up at him, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“You’ll never have to find out,” he promised, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.
But even as they stood there, wrapped in each other’s arms, the storm brewing around them continued to gather strength. And deep within the castle, Arin plotted her next move, her determination to destroy Maya and claim Kai for herself burning brighter than ever.
