Galaxy On Fire Chapter 14: 13. The scared bond
The air around the sacred grounds seemed to hum with anticipation. Maya stood beside Kai, her heart racing as the glowing orbs swirled faster, casting ethereal light onto their faces. The stone altar before them pulsed faintly, as if it were alive, responding to their presence.
Kai gently squeezed Maya’s trembling hand. “You’re sure about this?”
Maya turned to him, her green-tinged skin shimmering softly in the light. “Do I have a choice?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
“You always have a choice,” Kai replied, his deep voice steady. “But whatever happens, I’ll be by your side.”
Maya gave him a small, unsure smile. “Let’s get this over with before I change my mind.”
Kai nodded and stepped forward, guiding her to the altar. He placed his palm flat on the cool, smooth surface. “Ancient guardians of the sacred bond,” he intoned, his voice echoing in the stillness. “We stand here to seal a union that transcends worlds.”
The orbs slowed their spinning and began to form intricate patterns in the air, like constellations coming to life. Maya’s eyes widened as symbols she couldn’t understand appeared and dissolved, one after another.
“What’s happening?” she asked, her voice trembling.
“The ceremony is beginning,” Kai explained, glancing at her. “The altar is assessing our bond.”
“Assessing?” Maya repeated, her pulse quickening. “What if we don’t pass?”
Kai hesitated. “Then it won’t complete the bond, and… you might not survive.”
The weight of his words hit her like a tidal wave. She clenched her fists, determined not to let fear overwhelm her. I’ve made it this far. I won’t give up now.

The altar began to emit a low, melodic hum, and a translucent beam of light shot out from its center, enveloping Kai and Maya.
“Place your hand on the altar,” Kai instructed gently.
Maya hesitated, then slowly reached out. The moment her palm touched the stone, a surge of energy coursed through her body, making her gasp.
“Stay calm,” Kai urged, his own hand tightening on hers.
Images began to flash before Maya’s eyes. Moments from her life—her childhood, her family, her struggles—intermixed with glimpses of Kai’s world. She saw his battles, his sacrifices, and the moments they had shared together.
“It’s… showing us,” Maya murmured.
“Yes,” Kai said softly. “It’s testing the strength of our connection.”
As the images faded, the light surrounding them grew brighter, almost blinding. Then, the hum ceased abruptly, leaving a deafening silence in its wake.
“What does that mean?” Maya asked nervously.
Kai frowned, his eyes fixed on the altar. “I’m not sure. It’s supposed to…”
Before he could finish, the altar emitted a deep, resonant tone, and a voice, ancient and commanding, echoed around them.
“The bond is incomplete. The human carries the essence of alien blood but lacks the permanence required to sustain life. A union must be solidified, or she will perish.”
Maya’s stomach dropped. “What does that mean?”
Kai’s jaw tightened. “It means the Council was right. Without a permanent bond… you won’t survive.”
“Great,” Maya said sarcastically, trying to mask her fear. “And by ‘permanent bond,’ I assume they mean marriage.”
Kai nodded grimly. “The ceremony needs to happen now.”
Maya looked at him, her heart pounding. “Kai… this isn’t what I imagined my life would be. Getting married because some ancient altar says so? It’s insane.”
Kai stepped closer, his expression softening. “I know it’s not ideal, Maya. But this is about your survival. I can’t—” His voice broke slightly. “I can’t lose you.”
Her breath caught at the raw emotion in his words. For all his calm and strength, Kai looked genuinely afraid.
“What if this doesn’t work?” she asked, her voice trembling.
“It will,” Kai said firmly. “I’ll make sure it does.”
\---
Kai turned back to the altar, his expression resolute. “Guardians, I pledge myself to Maya, in mind, body, and soul. Let this bond transcend all boundaries.”
The altar pulsed again, and the symbols in the air shifted into a single glowing sigil.
“Maya,” Kai said, holding out his hand. “You have to say it too.”
Maya stared at his outstretched hand, her heart hammering in her chest. She could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on her. This wasn’t just about survival—it was about trust, about taking a leap of faith with someone who had risked everything for her.
Taking a deep breath, she placed her hand in his. “I… I pledge myself to Kai, in mind, body, and soul. Let this bond transcend all boundaries.”
The sigil flared brightly, and the beam of light enveloping them expanded, bathing the entire area in a radiant glow. Maya felt a warmth spread through her chest, soothing and invigorating all at once.
Then, as quickly as it had begun, the light vanished, leaving the sacred grounds bathed in the soft glow of the orbs.
Kai turned to her, his eyes searching hers. “How do you feel?”
Maya hesitated, then realized the sharp pain in her chest was gone. The greenish hue of her skin had softened, blending naturally with her complexion. She took a deep breath and smiled faintly. “Better. I think it worked.”
Kai exhaled in relief, a small smile playing at his lips. “Thank the stars.”

As they prepared to leave the sacred grounds, a sudden, harsh wind swept through the area. Kai’s expression darkened as he turned toward the horizon.
“What now?” Maya asked, her nerves returning.
A shadow appeared in the distance, rapidly approaching. Within moments, a sleek alien craft descended, its engines roaring.
Kai’s hand instinctively went to the hilt of his weapon. “Stay behind me.”
The craft landed, and several figures emerged—members of the Council, their robes billowing in the wind.
“Kai of Zarathia,” one of them called, their tone cold and authoritative. “You have violated the sacred rites by bringing an unworthy human to the bonding grounds.”
“She’s not unworthy,” Kai shot back, his voice firm. “She’s my bondmate now. The altar recognized her.”
The Council members exchanged skeptical glances. “We will verify that claim. But know this, Kai—your actions have disrupted the balance of our world. There will be consequences.”
Kai stepped forward, his posture unwavering. “I’ll face whatever consequences you deem necessary. But Maya is under my protection now. Harm her, and you’ll answer to me.”
The leader of the group narrowed their eyes. “Very well. But this isn’t over.”
As the Council members retreated to their craft, Maya turned to Kai, her voice trembling. “What did they mean by ‘consequences’?”
Kai sighed, his expression grim. “It means we’re not safe yet. They’ll come after us, Maya. And we need to be ready.”
Maya clenched her fists, her newfound resolve shining through. “Let them try. I’m not going down without a fight.”
Kai smiled faintly, admiration flickering in his eyes. “That’s the spirit. But first, we need to figure out our next move.”
Together, they turned toward the horizon, the challenges ahead looming large. But for the first time, they faced them not as individuals, but as one.
