Galaxy On Fire Chapter 8: 8. Transformation edge
Maya’s head throbbed as she regained consciousness. The sterile smell of antiseptics stung her nose, and the cold sensation of a metal slab beneath her back sent a shiver through her body. Her arms and legs felt heavy, restrained by sleek bands of alien technology. Above her, glowing symbols and graphs swirled across an overhead screen, casting eerie shadows in the dimly lit chamber.
Her heart pounded as the realization hit her—she wasn’t in a cell. This was some kind of laboratory.
“Awake already?” a cold voice echoed.
Maya turned her head to see a tall alien woman with shimmering silver skin and piercing violet eyes standing at a control panel. The woman’s features were sharp and angular, radiating authority and detachment.
“Who are you?” Maya croaked, her throat dry.
“I am Veyra, the Council’s chief geneticist,” the woman replied, her voice as clinical as the environment. “And you, human, are about to become something greater.”
Maya’s blood ran cold. “What are you talking about?”
Veyra approached, her footsteps precise and deliberate. “You are incompatible with our world as you are—weak, fragile, mortal. To survive here, you must evolve. The Council has deemed it necessary to transform you.”
Maya struggled against the restraints, her panic mounting. “I don’t want to be transformed! Let me go!”
Veyra raised a single brow, her expression unyielding. “Your desires are irrelevant. The process has already begun.”
At her words, a low hum filled the room. Maya’s eyes darted to the machinery surrounding her. Tubes filled with glowing blue liquid descended, attaching to the bands around her wrists and ankles.
“No! Stop this!” Maya screamed, thrashing violently.
The restraints tightened, holding her in place. Veyra tilted her head, observing Maya’s struggle with a hint of curiosity.
“You should be honored,” Veyra said, her voice almost mocking. “Few humans are given the chance to ascend beyond their limitations.”
“I don’t want to ascend!” Maya spat. “I want my life back!”
Veyra’s expression hardened. “Your life ended the moment you set foot on this planet.”

Meanwhile, in a nearby chamber, Kai was on his knees, his hands bound behind him with energy restraints. His face was bruised, and his usually sharp expression was clouded with anger and desperation. Two guards stood watch, their weapons at the ready.
“I demand to see the Council!” Kai growled.
One of the guards sneered. “You’re in no position to demand anything, Prince Kai. You’ve defied the Council’s orders and brought an abomination into our world. Your actions have consequences.”
Kai surged forward, but the restraints sent a jolt of electricity through his body, making him collapse with a groan.
“I swear, if you harm her—” Kai began, his voice strained.
The guard cut him off with a smirk. “Oh, harm her? Hardly. She’s being improved. By the time they’re done with her, she won’t be human anymore.”
Kai’s eyes widened, and his heart clenched. He had known the Council was ruthless, but this was beyond anything he’d imagined.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing,” Kai said, his voice desperate. “She doesn’t need to change to survive. She’s strong the way she is!”
The guards exchanged glances, clearly unimpressed.
“Spare us the sentimental speeches, prince,” one of them said. “You should worry about yourself. Once the Council is done with her, they’ll decide your fate.”

Back in the lab, Maya gritted her teeth as a sharp, searing pain coursed through her body. The blue liquid from the tubes was being injected into her veins, its glow spreading under her skin.
Her screams echoed in the chamber, but Veyra remained unmoved, monitoring the process with detached precision.
“What… are you doing to me?” Maya managed to gasp.
“The serum is rewriting your genetic code,” Veyra explained as if discussing the weather. “It will enhance your strength, speed, and durability. Your organs will adapt to function in environments hostile to humans. Even your lifespan will increase exponentially.”
Maya’s head swam as the pain intensified. “You’re… turning me into one of you?”
“Not entirely,” Veyra said, her tone almost smug. “You’ll be something… unique. A hybrid of human and Xentharian. The best of both worlds.”
“I don’t want this!” Maya screamed again, tears streaming down her face.
Veyra sighed, as though dealing with a petulant child. “Your consent was never required.”
\---
Suddenly, the room’s alarms blared, and red lights flashed. Veyra’s calm demeanor shifted to irritation as she looked at a monitor.
“What now?” she muttered.
Through the chaos, the sound of distant explosions reverberated through the facility. Maya’s heart leaped with hope.
“Kai…” she whispered.
Veyra turned sharply to her. “Stay here,” she ordered, as if Maya had a choice. The geneticist left the room, the door sealing shut behind her.
Maya’s body burned from the serum, but she refused to give in. She pulled at the restraints with renewed vigor, ignoring the pain.
“Come on, Maya,” she muttered to herself. “You’ve been through worse. You can fight this.”
\---
In the facility’s corridors, Kai moved like a shadow, having overpowered his guards when the explosions distracted them. He didn’t know who or what had caused the chaos, but he wasn’t about to waste the opportunity.
He stole a weapon from a fallen guard and navigated the labyrinthine halls, his thoughts solely on Maya.
“She’s in the lab,” he muttered, recalling the guards’ conversation.
Kai turned a corner and came face-to-face with two more guards. Without hesitation, he fired the weapon, the energy blasts hitting their marks.
“Sorry,” he muttered to their unconscious forms. “I’ll apologize later.”
\---
Maya’s breathing was shallow as she felt the serum’s effects intensify. Her vision blurred, and her limbs felt like they were on fire.
The door hissed open, and she braced herself for more of Veyra’s cold detachment. Instead, Kai burst into the room, his eyes wide with urgency.
“Maya!” he called, rushing to her side.
“Kai…” she whispered, her voice weak but filled with relief.
Kai examined the machinery, his expression darkening. “What have they done to you?”
“They’re… changing me,” Maya said, her words slurring.
Kai’s jaw clenched. “Not if I can help it.”
He grabbed the control panel, searching for a way to disable the process.
“Hurry,” Maya said, her eyes fluttering shut.
“No, no, no,” Kai said, panic creeping into his voice. “Stay with me, Maya. Don’t you dare give up.”
Finally, he found a lever marked with alien symbols that he guessed was the main control. Without hesitation, he pulled it.
The machinery powered down with a whine, and the tubes detached from Maya’s restraints.
Kai caught her as she collapsed into his arms.
“It’s okay,” he murmured, cradling her close. “I’ve got you.”
Maya’s eyelids fluttered open, her gaze locking with his. “Kai… what if it’s too late?”
“It’s not,” he said firmly. “I won’t let them take you from me.”
As he carried her out of the lab, alarms continued to blare, and the explosions grew louder. The facility was falling apart, but Kai’s grip on Maya tightened.
Whatever came next, he would fight for her. Together, they would face whatever challenges awaited, even if it meant defying the entire alien hierarchy.
