Lies and Funerals Under the Moon Chapter 14
Liam looked even more wretched than the day before.
Perhaps he had stood at the door all night. His eyes were shot with blood, dark circles under them making him look exhausted and gloomy.
The bruises from Ryder’s beating were untreated, turning a nasty purple.
He was holding a bag of breakfast.
Seeing Kate, he lifted it. "I bought this for you."
Kate didn't take it. She crossed her arms.
"I didn't know that after six months, you developed a hobby for eavesdropping."
Her eyes were cold and mocking. No pity.
Liam looked at Ryder standing behind her and laughed bitterly.
"I know why you hated Katrina now."
"Because right now, seeing Ryder, thinking about what he did to you... I want to stab him to death too."
Kate instinctively stepped in front of Ryder, glaring at Liam warily.
"Don't be crazy. We are done. Who I'm with is none of your business."
Liam looked at her with red eyes, pressing a hand to his heart.
Tears welled up in his eyes.
"The moment I realized you really didn't want me, when you made me leave with nothing, when you sent me to exile..."
"I resented you for being so cruel. I thought about giving up looking for you. But as soon as the thought rose, I killed it."
"Kate, we grew up together. We are mates chosen by the Moon Goddess. I knew since I was small that you would be my Luna."
"I always firmly believed the person growing old with me would be you."
"I never thought of separating from you... Never."
Even at the height of his obsession with Katrina, he never planned to leave Kate to marry her.
But he didn't expect Kate to just leave.
Listening to him, Kate clenched her hands at her sides until her nails dug into her palms, drawing blood.
She smirked.
"Liam, saying all these pretty words didn't stop you from cheating. It doesn't change the fact that you almost killed me for another woman."
"If you had just stayed with Katrina happily, I would have respected you a little."
"But you claim you love me, yet you couldn't control yourself. You hurt me for her over and over."
"And now that I've completely given up, you run here saying this, expecting forgiveness."
"Liam, wanting your cake and eating it too... You disgust me."
Kate turned to leave.
Liam grabbed her hand, eyes begging.
"Kate, I really know I was wrong. I regret it."
"I was possessed. My brain was broken to hurt you. I regret it so much..."
"I won't care about this man. I won't contact Katrina ever again. Just give me one more chance. Let's start over, okay?"
This time, before Kate could speak, Ryder cut in.
"No!"
He looked at Liam with disgust.
"Don't talk about Kate like she's you. A cheating scumbag and a homewrecker deserve each other."
"Kate and I are in a normal relationship. What right do you have to 'not care'? You aren't qualified."
Liam glared at Ryder.
"Even if you took advantage of her vulnerability, it's useless! Don't be too smug. Kate and I are fated mates. Our past isn't something your few months can compare to!"
Ryder laughed. "Liam, didn't you betray your mate for a woman you knew for two months? Your words aren't very convincing."
He put an arm around Kate’s waist and whispered deliberately, "Let's go, wifey. I'll drive you to work."
Kate raised an eyebrow at him silently. Who is your wifey?
But the whisper made her ears burn.
They walked a few steps when Liam’s unwilling voice came from behind.
"Kate, what do I have to do for you to forgive me?"
Kate didn't stop. Her voice was indifferent. "Nothing will make me forgive you."
Suddenly, the sound of a blade piercing flesh echoed.
Followed by Liam’s suppressed groan.
"How about this?"
Kate stopped dead. She turned around in shock.
Liam was holding a silver dagger.
It was buried deep in his abdomen.
