ohann was taken to Warsaw garrison commander Generalleutnant Stahel in his temporary headquarters. After debriefing the General and his staff, Johann received his promotion to Leutnant due to the death of two of his higher-ups.
He suffered mixed emotions over the news. He’d been waiting for this promotion for such a long time and should have received it many years ago. But that unfortunate incident in Shanghai had stalled his career. His name had never been officially cleared from the accusation of murder-rape. He scoffed. Nowadays, he’d receive a badge of honor for committing a murder-rape, instead of being accused of the horrific crime it effectively was. He really hated what had become of his army, his country.
Johann returned to his quarters to put the new insignia on his uniform. Once he had, his gaze fell on an envelope hidden in the back of his locker. It contained photographs of his family and his ex-fiancée. The one who’d decided not to wait for him until the war ended.
He fingered through the photographs until he came across the one of his former comrade Richard with his sister. It struck him like a thunderbolt. She was several years older now, but there wasn’t a shadow of doubt. The fiery redhead was none other than Alexandra.
