Chapter 12: Anna
P
anic rose in her body, escalating as a big, bony hand covered her face and warm breath hit the skin on her cheek. The blood rushed in her ears so loud, she almost didn’t hear the whispered voice.
“Anna. Shush. Don’t scream.”
Peter!
He was here! She’d found him. Her heart did a double flip and she nodded her understanding. The hand slipped from her mouth, taking the face mask with it, and two strong hands turned her around and pressed her against his chest. She gasped in shock, because the skeletal body didn’t resemble the husband who’d left six months ago.
“Anna. Is it really you? Sweetheart. My darling.” He showered her with breathless kisses between murmured words of endearment.
“You’re here. I found you,” she murmured against his lips, before his demanding kiss silenced every thought in her mind and she gave herself over to the sensation. When they came up for air, she said, “Oh, God, Peter. When I didn’t see you amongst the other prisoners, I was so afraid that I’d come too late.”
“Bad weeds grow tall.” His crooked grin couldn’t hide the emotion in his damp eyes. He hugged her close again, devouring her mouth in a passionate kiss. “I’ve dreamed of you every single day…I can’t believe you’re here.”
“In the flesh.” Anna tried to lighten the mood even as tears ran down her face. The stolen seconds ticked by and she remembered that she didn’t have much time. “I saw your brother Stan…he told me where you were.”
Peter’s jaw tightened. “Stan’s not doing well.”
“No wonder, in theses conditions. He’s fighting off an infection,” Anna whispered, soaking up the warmth of being in Peter’s arms.
“Yeah, he hasn’t improved since they removed the bullet and stitched him up.”
Anna nodded. “I…have a plan to get you out of here.” It wasn’t actually a plan, but more a straw she hung on to. “Stay put. I’ll return.”
A sound outside the door brought Anna and Peter abruptly apart. Peter disappeared into the shadows just in time when a beam of light illuminated the spot where he’d been standing seconds earlier.
“Landesschüzte Kaufmann,” Anna said, slightly panicked.
“Professor Scherer is asking for you,” the guard said, standing in the entrance.
“I’m just finishing up. Your superior will be pleased with you,” she said.
The guard nodded once and hurried away from the bone yard in such haste, Anna had difficulty keeping up with his pace.
