he next day, Anna and Peter accompanied Lotte to the train station. The name Alexandra felt foreign on her lips, but the more she said it, the easier it became.
“Alexandra, you can’t imagine how much it meant to us that you came to our ceremony,” Anna said and hugged her sister tight.
“I wouldn’t want to miss my savior’s happy day for anything in the world,” Lotte said and then giggled. “Although I would hope that at least one of us will get a

wedding.”
Peter raised a brow, and Anna said, “I’ll explain later, darling.”
“Alexandra, the train south departs over there,” Anna said, heading for the other side of the station.
“Wait.” Lotte tugged at her sleeve, guilt written all over her face.
“Oh, no! What have you done now?” Anna felt the ground move beneath her feet.
“Promise you won’t tell Mutter for now?” Lotte begged her with huge puppy eyes.
Anna sighed, but nodded.
“I’m going East. Alexandra Wagner, freshly baked German
Wehrmachtshelferin
and English spy, has orders to report to the military administration tomorrow morning regarding my new position as radio operator in Warsaw.”
Peter’s eyes widened with every word. “You can’t do that. It’s much too dangerous. Warsaw may seem firmly in German hands, but the Red Army is approaching and the Polish Home Army ready for a counterstrike. You’ll most certainly die.”
“I’d rather die trying to save what is left of my country than hide one day longer in the convent.” Lotte shrugged and then she took a step towards Peter to hug him tight. “Take care of my sister, big man.”
Next thing Anna knew, her baby sister had boarded a train to Warsaw.
